I am so sick of people posting this gif without any context. The man that kicked the kid was mentally disabled. The child frightened him, and the father reacted. I dont think anyone was at fault.

[–]epsilona01 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The father was also mortified when he found out the dude he just laid out was mentally handicapped.

I would feel bad after as well, but if someone kicked my kid I'd do the same.

You kick my kid in the nuts, and a punch in the face is the least you'll have to worry about. Handicapped or not. I'm an equal-opportunity anti-kid-nut-kicking man.

[–]epsilona01 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He may have the mind of a child. I'm certain you wouldn't punch a kid in the face, your equal-opportunity ass beating stance would surely stop before that.

[–]Zeppelanoid 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, however I wouldn't stop to check if the guy had some sort of mental dissability before the punching began. It's kind of a shitty situation, I guess. A lose-lose situation.

I bet the kid didn't frighten him and they lied. It looks more like the guy was on the phone and the kid was making noise and it pissed him off. He looked annoyed, not frightened. My uncle has Downs' Syndrome and people with disabilities tend to get frustrated easily by people not following rules and norms. If my uncle ever did anything like that we'd be mortified and he'd be in huge shit.

Just because people have disabilities doesn't mean they don't have their own personalities and quirks. It seems like this guy has a very poor attitude, and even though I wouldn't say he should have gotten punched, I still think he doesn't get a free pass and got what he deserved as a human being. Sometimes people with disabilities develop poor social skills and become spoiled from people treating them different than everyone else, so maybe he learned a lesson. They aren't dumb and they know what they should and shouldn't do. He may have the mind of a child, but I wouldn't even go as far as to say children are dumb, they just need guidance in some aspects of life. The biggest problem is that they just don't communicate well with most of society.

Also, he probably has a history of being violent so his mom or worker should have been watching him, or just shouldn't have taken him out. She is a lot to blame here.

[–]DankJemo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The guy certainly didn't appear to be all there I am sure if the father had noticed the guy wasn't mentally disabled he wouldn't have slugged him, but if this guy is disabled enough to not understand kicking a kid is a bad move, he should probably have someone watching him... of course I guess he could, they just weren't around at this moment (unless it was that woman.)... Also, that guy didn't look too nervous...

It does not look like the child frightened him. He clearly paused for a moment when he saw the child, and for whatever reason thought it would be a good idea to kick him in the nuts.

There's no excuse for this, retarded or not. If he can't control himself, then his care taken shouldn't have brought him out in public.

Possibly, but the political shitstorm behind the "Lock the retards up" act would prevent keeping them indoors. Unless you have them commited, which most people are not willing to do. If anything, it's the lady's fault for not watching her son. (i can only assume the lady was the disabled man's mother)

If I were the father I wouldn't care if he were retarded. If someone is so retarded they are likely to randomly kick children for being loud, they shouldn't be out in public. Even had I known he was retarded, I'd still have laid him out for hitting my kid.

The white guy was totally at fault, disabilities are not an excuse to go around kicking children in the nuts.

On the other hand, it is funny because the kid is black :3

[–]CodySmash 0 points1 point ago

[–]bekahrooney 1 point2 points ago

It's quite possible that he didn't notice. He just saw a man kicking his child and reacted in a pretty normal way. I'd punch someone with DS if he kicked my little sister.

"I'll punch a woman, hell, I'll punch a baby, I don't care."

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

Regardless, I don't think my first reaction in any situation would be "hit that guy!" Maybe I'm just not that kind of a person.

It makes me sad thinking of the shitstorm of problems that this incident is going to cause for (what I assume to be) the handicapped person's carer, both in terms of possibly suffering trouble for the incident, and the psychological problems it could cause for the guy who got punched...

Same can clearly be said the other way though, I admit.

He doesn't seem to make contact with the kid at all. From what I can see, he kicks off to the kid's right (Left from this angle, Stage right). I think he was just trying to scare the kid, or it's a failed leg sweep.

Kicking man got a call on his phone, from a mysterious number.

"You see that little kid next to you? Kick him in the nuts right away or you'll get a bullet to your head. Don't believe me? You're name is Derp Herpway and your social security # is XXXXXXXXXX. You have 5 seconds to comply. Click"

[–]lychee-twist 20 points21 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't feel like just because someone has Down's Syndrome they should be given some sort of soft hand. Not prison time, but not any "That guy just kicked that kid! Oh, he's retarded. Carry on" sort of thing. He needs punishment like any other person. If he has the mind of a five year old, that's no excuse. Five year olds know not to kick people. The mind of a five year old might be young, but that by no means makes them stupid.

That said, the black guy shouldn't have reacted the way he did either. But that said, I can tsk tsk that all I want, but I would have no idea how I would react if I had a kid that a grown man kicked for no reason. I don't think he saw retarded guy kicking his boy somewhat lightly. I think he saw grown man kicking his son, and that just isn't acceptable.

[–]Jamaicaman90 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I doubt that guy had time to register that the other guy had DS, it looked purely like an instinctive reaction to protect his kid.

DS is no excuse anyway. I think you're underselling DS sufferers by thinking they shouldn't expect a reaction like this with this behaviour.

[–]kernelhappy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it depends on the level of impairment due to the DS. There are very high functioning people with DS who understand better, there are also people with DS who have trouble understanding the finer nuances of interaction with others. The later need additional attention from caregivers.

This clip has always looked like a perfect storm of bad timing on all sides.

[–]Jamaicaman90 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps, I'm hardly qualified to make judgements on DS I suppose.

Regardless, I still feel the father should not be held liable for his actions. It all happened very quickly and he didn't know how the situation would develop, and when your son is being assaulted by a grown man you don't have time to stand around.

[–]kernelhappy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I couldn't agree more. Maybe if the kid ran and grabbed the dad and he had more time to assess the assailant as he approached him and still struck him, it might be a different story. But it happened fast enough that I think the instinct to protect his child kicked in before he could assess that the guy was impaired.

[–]lychee-twist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the Dad's reaction was totally just in the moment. Like I said, I think he didn't see a guy with DS kicking his kid. He saw a grown man in a leather jacket kicking his kid. And even if he did register it, I don't think I can fully criticize him on that one. I mean, I do a teeny-weeny bit, but, c'mon, he's doing dad duty by protecting his young son.

And I agree with you. It's frustrating since I think that DS isn't as crippling as society makes it to be (and often flaunting it, thank you Goodwill and Sarah Palin). I think probably the worst aspect of it is that society sees you as someone who isn't capable of acting in an adult manner at all.

[–]Jamaicaman90 0 points1 point ago

I'm British so I don't get the full brunt of Sarah Palin, thankfully.

[–]SanguineHaze 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are we even sure he's GOT DS? I've met a few people with this condition in my life, and the ones I've met have always been the nicest, most innocent people I've ever met. Just genuinely caring individuals. From my personal experiences, this type of reaction doesn't really fit with Downs. Could be that I just haven't seen enough.

[–]Jamaicaman90 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well we can't be sure but his facial features seem to indicate that he has. I'm just going on that and the fact other comments said the same.

[–]SanguineHaze 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's certainly a possibility, but it's totally unconfirmed. I just have a hard time labeling him with something that might not be the actual issue. Wouldn't want other people with DS to be viewed in a negative light because of speculation on this particular video (which is poor quality to begin with).

[–]steinman17 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That said, the black guy shouldn't have reacted the way he did either.

I disagree. I would have done the same thing if anyone had kicked my child, unless that other person was a child too (I would have argued with it's parents or something) After the fact if I see that person had some sort of disability such as Down Syndrome, I would have apologized in my own right, but not regretted my reaction.

[–]lychee-twist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think yours is a perfectly reasonable response. I hope it came across that I wasn't criticizing the dad too much. While a mild criticism certainly was in the first sentence, I recognize the biggest issue with me and this gif: I do not have children.

Kids are a game changer. I won't say the dad was a bad person in any right for protecting his kid. There isn't anything wrong with that. If I had to put it into a verbal sentence it'd be "Ehhh, you shouldn't have done that, but I can see where you're coming from".

[–]HappyWulf 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That said, the black guy shouldn't have reacted the way he did either.

"How dare you kick a child, let alone MY child!?" I'd punch the guy too. He did not over react. But I don't know any of the extra context.

The kid just looks like he was being a kid, responding to something the man at the desk said.

[–]SkullDump 32 points33 points ago

[–]kernelhappy 7 points8 points ago

Was it excessive give the guy was handicapped, probably. Was it understandable for a parent to overreact when they see someone assault their child? Absolutely.

Given the timing and pacing of the event, I think it's reasonable to say that it was reactionary. Had the guy kicked the kid and the kid ran and grabbed the parent who had time to assess that the guy was handicapped as he approached him, it would be less understandable. But it happened pretty quick, I don't see how you can really fault the guy reacting to protect an obvious threat to his child.

[–]SanguineHaze 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. It's natural for a parent to react in this type of way. Someone gets physical with your kid, and they DON'T react in this way, I have to question their parenting.

I truly believe that a huge problem with DS is how the people are treated by people around them. Tell someone and treat someone like they're stupid, and they'll probably act stupid believing that they are. I've known of a girl with DS that was coddled since she was different and f'ing exploited that fact by doing whatever she wanted knowing she wouldn't get punished. The girl was smart, and everyone around her that wasn't her caretaker could see it. People seriously underestimate how smart people with DS are. Given there are people out there that biologically fit the DS stigma, but I am really a believer that treating them normally will probably help them out. Your thoughts are something I've definitely thought about in the past.

That said, like I've mentioned before, if this particular man has the learning capability of a five year old, five year olds are old enough to learn what's right and what's wrong and expect punishment for doing something that's wrong. If a five year old had kicked that little kid, he would still be punished and know why he was getting punished. I certainly would have.

If he doesn't have the mind of a five year old, as in, younger, he shouldn't be walking around alone in public.

"Five year olds know not to kick people. The mind of a five year old might be young, but that by no means makes them stupid."

Yes but being retarded makes you stupid.

This is kind of a sad story. I HOPE that if I were in the same situation as the father that I would have the stones to react exactly as he did because that was exactly the correct response given what he knew, but that said, its sad when someone who doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the consequences of his actions gets hammered like that.

Wat.

I'll concede that there are some forms of mental disease that prevent negative reinforcement from having a meaningful or predictable affect.

But to broadly state that punishment doesn't serve to mold behavior in any way? I can't tell if you're trolling...? It's certainly an incredibly stupid thing to say, but I suppose I've seen dumber things said on the internet.

In the event that you actually believe this nonsense, you should consider starting your education on the reality of punishment here: Operant conditioning. This is a well-understood principle in modern psychology.

The guy's smarter than my dog. My dog understands a swat on the ass means don't do that again. If someone I didn't know even touched my kid in a way I thought was inappropriate, they'd be lucky to get off with a black eye and a swollen lip.

I don't think it was necessarily good for the kid to see his dad get so immediately violent. But, in all honesty I would have probably done the same thing.

[–]someoneiswrongonthe 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, I think it was good for the kid to see his dad immediately defending him.

Not all violence is bad.

[–]5spoke 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I agree the dad should have done something, like immediately step in front of him and confront the man, I was just saying that the zero to knock out part may have been a little intense for a 5 year old

[–]someoneiswrongonthe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I see... yes, it's intense, but I don't think the kid even had time to process it.

Consider the mind of a 5 year old. Bad guy appears. bad guy goes down. End of story. (depending on the aftermath of course...)

Perhaps he even learned a valuable lesson.

[–]Pfeffersack 0 points1 point ago

You'd do the same thing because it is appropriate. It is a non-hypocritical way to tell the man your feelings.

If my child is born handicapped, I am giving him up for adoption. I know it's harsh, but I will never be a rich man and cannot afford treatment, let alone lawsuits.

The guy on the left has down syndrome. The woman is his carer.

There you go, he's not a dick. He's just retarded.

[–]greenw40 6 points7 points ago

Those two are not mutually exclusive.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points ago

Sorry, I know some people with Downs. Just because you have it, it's not a free pass to go around kicking children.

[–]i_m_fury 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And down syndrome also does not mean that he's not a dick.

[–]bcos4life 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. If the lady cannot control the guy, don't take him around kids. I hate when people think that a disability gives people the right to be rude. All through school, we had a kid in a wheelchair that treated everyone like his bitch because no one would tell him to fuck off. One day, he dropped his pencil and yells "PICK IT UP!" at me. I laughed and told him to go fuck himself or ask nicely. I was actually sent to the principal's office.

I totally agree. I punch every person with down's syndrome in the face every time they act up. There one guy on the bus who rubs his crotch all the time. I make it a point to lick him in the balls as hard as I can every time I see him do it. I don't know if it works but it makes me feel all justice-y and shit.

EDIT: Rather than fix the spelling error in the body of my comment, I'll just say it down here...*kick. It's too funny to fix.

at first I didn't notice the man had DS but now that it is obvious, i still don't feel sorry for him. I think if this is normal behavior for him, for his safety and others around him, the parents need to either be more aware of what he is doing or keep him away from others. I am around a lot of people with DS and it is rare for them to be violent. Something else is going on here we don't see (i wonder what he learns at home).

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I remember this in the news awhile back. The man that kicks the black kid has some sort of mental problem/disease. It's kinda for everyone really. Wasn't really a need to knock that guy out cold, but I'd probably have done the same if it was my kid.
