in Europe they have 'real' licorice, not the American sugary crappy kind. I DO agree that eating American licorice is awful, but try to score some Dutch or Swedish stuff, it's awesome.

if you have balls, try to find 'salmiak lakrits', it will blow your, um, mouth...

[–]an_eggman 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Salmiak is actually another name for ammonium chloride. If you want to find out what it tastes like almost on its own, you should try to get some Lakrisal. Or some Hockey powder.

[–]kungtotte 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck yeah, Lakrisal.

My roommate brought back some sort of salty licorice thing from Finland which he referred to as salmiak. It's quite possibly the worst-tasting thing I've ever put in my mouth.

Salmiakki comes in two distinct categories. The good ones where you can actually taste the ammonium clhoride and the shit that just tastes salty.

[–]knipil 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been known to make pure ammonium chloride and eat. But then again, I am Swedish, so maybe that's what's expected of me.

[–]soulofaqua 1 point2 points ago

It is made by combining the two deadly when ingested chemicals ammonia and hydrogen chloride.

You should not try it in powder form. Anyone that likes salty liquorice totally should.

The only black licorice I really know is the dutch stuff. Some of it can be actually sweet with a good licorice flavour, but the double zoutes are the way to go. Saltier than pure salt

I applaud you, but you are wrong. There is licorice, red candy and something black that they desperately try to pass off as licorice. If there's one thing I really really miss from Holland it's licorice, and more importantly, 50 kinds of em in every supermarket.

If you're ever in Manhattan, Economy Candy on Rivington has a pretty big selection of licorice. Dylans candy bar on 60th and 3rd is another option, but their licorice selection is a bit limited. They sell it by the pound on the first floor and prepackaged in the basement. Also I'm sure you can find licorice at any of the Fairway supermarkets, also Whole foods and Trader Joes.

Lastly, if you really need some imported licorice, you can try the gift shop at Scandinavia House on Park Ave, between 37th and 38th. They're a little bit more expensive, but you can also pick up chocolates and some other Scandinavian candies.

I'm sure there are also some Scandinavian supermarkets somewhere in the city that you could look, but I don't know of any.

Target has Australian licorice. Closest I've been able to find here. Good and Plentys are decent, as far as American licorice goes.

[–]Explogo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's considered "Australian licorice" in the US?

Here in Aus you can pretty much divide liquorice into soft and hard, with soft liquorice normally the better more expensive stuff, and hard being the cheap nasty flavorless crap.

[–]rabidmoon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not really sure, it's just called Australian licorice at Target and they had two different brands of it. I'm pregnant and craving the stuff, so I bought both. The first kind, which I'm out of, was really good and soft, almost brown in color. The other brand is "Market Pantry" (Target's brand) and it's called Aussie-Style Chewy Candy... it's solid black, hard and not nearly as good, but still much, much better than Twizzlers (flavorless American licorice).

The best licorice I ever had was this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Katjes-Katzen-Pfotchen-Licorice-2-7-Ounce/dp/B000S4EXGA

I'm going to order a ton of it after I give birth. Not really supposed to have much licorice when pregnant, but I didn't know that when I bought it.

[–]Explogo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The soft stuff sounds like it's similar to Darrell Lea Liquorice, a fantastic soft liquorice which I eat way too much of.

[–]jkrushal 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, but that's why everyone uses anise oil now rather than the root extract. I do still eat the natural stuff, but only because the results aren't permanent as far as I know.

[–]bizziboi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait. Pretty much all food in North America is high on salt. Isn't that in itself enough reason to get high blood pressure?

[–]Applesaucery 32 points33 points ago

I love black licorice and hate the plasticy-tasting red stuff--I have never met another American my age who agrees (grew up in France, where it's more popular as a children's candy, had friends over there who liked it).

[–]TheSeaCow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also prefer black over red, and I've met very few people who agree with me, but according to all of them they've been eating it sense they where young, so maybe it's an acquired taste.

Black is only one of many colors that people seem to call "black licorice" come in. A lot of it is actually what we in a large part of Europe call "Salmiak" or a version of that word. Comes in colors from red, brown, black and i think i've seen pink also. It's basically a strong licorice with added ammonium chloride for a kicker. Sweet licorice in my experience is preferred in the Netherlands while the more salty salmiak is most popular in Finland. The tastes span from extremely mild "natural" licorice that uses pure licorice root for taste, to very flavor-intense artificially flavored kinds that most people prefer (since natural licorice extract from the root is VERY expensive to get up to the quantities that makes it "pop" rather than being very bland.

Once upon a time I was studying abroad in France and there were these Scandinavian girls in my french class I was trying to impress and they asked me if I wanted to try some of their special salty black licorice. Needless to say it tasted like death and I started making loud vocalizations as to how horrid I found its taste and said roughly the same thing. "Candy is supposed to be a happy thing. This makes people miserable." The Scandinavians thought it was funny. Thanks for letting me reminisce.

Ever had an Aniseed Ball? It's a maroon red candy ball that is almost impossible to bite down on until it is almost completely dissolved and tastes like black licorice (but a hell of a lot better).

Also this is the perfect place for this question: Anybody know where to get licorice scotty dogs? That was the best licorice I've ever had. My uncle doesn't remember who gave it to him.

No mention of the black "Red Vines"? I like to buy a pack in the morning, open them and eat a few right away. I then let them sit on my desk until around 6pm and they are aged to perfection as they are best when you have to gnaw on them a bit.

I always joked that if I won the lottery, I would blow it all on black licorice. I would have it stacked every where. I imagine the inside of my car filled to the windows with black licorice, my teeth stained black like I can't find a toothbrush. I would constantly take giant bites of black licorice while in conversation, then toss the rest of the stick to the side and just grab a new stick. I laugh to think about how pissed off my friends and family would be when they found out that I wasted millions on a candy that I don't even like.

Yeah, actually, I'm a pretty big fan of black licorice. Honestly, there are some that taste like a rain gutter, but there are some that are, for lack of a better word "crack money."

My friend put me onto some stuff from New Zealand. Wow. Mind=blow.

I grew up on black licorice candy from Finland. It was ridiculously strong and my grandmother always said it would help an upset stomach. It was called sisu if I remember correctly. I loved that stuff. Then again she also said Jager did the same (help upset stomach), which always cracked me up.

I read a story in the newspaper in the early 90's about a woman who had been going to different doctors for 30 years+ about her feeling like absolut shit all the time.

They took all the blood samples and ran all kinds of tests and were unable to pinpoint the cause of her constant feeling of being sick.

Then she went on vacation to some far away place where she was unable to get ahold of her 8 ounce daily dose of Licorice and after a couples of days she started feeling great for the first time in all those years.

Talking about wasting your life needlessly.

The Dutch love that shit. I lived in the Netherlands for a year and the candy isle was always 50% black licorice or variations. Never changed my mind on how much I hated it though. Black licorice any where in the world always tastes bad, but I do agree that it's slightly less terrible overseas.

I remember when I was a kid there was an old guy at my parents' church that used to always have a packet of these tiny black things that tasted like licorice, except they were so powerful that you could feel it in your nose and behind your eyes. I actually liked them. I may have imagined it though because people look at me like I'm insane when I describe them.

Whenever someone tells me that they don't like licorice, my response is always the same: I will believe that you actually do not like licorice when I have watched you sample this product(They aren't hard to find, any whole foods/organic food store will have them), and you still say you don't like licorice afterwards. And I won't take your word for it. I'll need at the very least a video of you opening a new box, putting one of those wonderful chewy bastards in your mouth, chewing, swallowing, opening your mouth to display that it is gone, then immediately declaring, "Nope. Still don't like it."

Then, and only then, will I believe you.

Holy fucking fuck, those things are good.
