A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I notice there are a couple of green spots in NC (my state) possibly because Pepsi originated here. I say soda though.

The South always seems to go red...

[–]ivquatch 6 points7 points ago

TIL In the south, the coke brand is synonymous with soda/pop. EPIC Corporate win.

[deleted]

[–]ivquatch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So essentially the South would become coke-red states while the coasts become bastions of pepsi-blue?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This looks fairly accurate from my experiences. it's weird how there are a few random soda counties in the middle of pop country.

[–]CrazyEight8 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live in Michigan, and even my own parents give me funny stares when I call pop "soda". So yes, the map's accurate, at least for that state.

[–]dptronz 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you offer someone a 'pop' in California, you're offering them methamphetamine.

[–]binarybandit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can confirm this.

[–]carlsaischa 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You shouldn't go around LA offering people coke either.

[–]Ikarus3426 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone from the South, I realize Coke is a brand name and 'soda' or 'pop' would make more sense to say. But soda just sounds to formal and pop makes me feel like a 2 year because it's a silly word.

[–]TexSavory 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Note to haters: Many people--especially old-timers--from rural areas in Central Texas say "soda water".

[–]Zaos 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember being called a Faggot because I called a soft drink something other then "Coke" in west Texas. And attempting to explain that "Coke" is a brand name just seemed to confuse and irritate the locals. Man I was happy to get the fuck out of that state. I live in Seattle now.

[–]lbmouse 0 points1 point ago

"Texas — It's like a whole other country.®" -- And the rest of the states wish it was.

[–]jarkana[S] 4 points5 points ago

It is based on votes from an online experiment from popvssoda.com.

[–]connecttwo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has been posted here before and the concern I have about this site that it only questions people who actively go out and seek this site.

This study obtains its data solely from responses to this web page

I'm no social scientist, but I would be led to believe it would skew the results.

[–]Gustav55 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

true but for the most part its accurate in my experience. Like it has been stated before if you ask for a soda in Michigan most people will look at you funny and then ask if you if you want a pop.

Or if you go down south and ask for a pop they don't even have a clue what your asking for, and will probably ask you if you want some Sweet tea. (and if you're smart you'll say yes because nothing beats sweet tea from the south)

[–]connecttwo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From the south. Would take good sweet tea over soda any day.

[–]lbmouse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah... they get 399 votes for "tarzan slam"... 258 for "hot man gravy" and 125 for "Uncle Meatball's Wonder Tonic with a free swizzle stick for my Ultimate Bromance Lover Brad now drink it Fruity Pants"

[–]aclark004 1 point2 points ago

Alaska doesn't know what the heck to call it.

[–]ayohbee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They seem pretty confused.

[–]bgovern 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would suspect that the Alaska confusion is because there aren't a lot of people FROM Alaska. They are probably mostly people who move to the state for a job from elsewhere.

[–]coxlap 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't imagine asking my friend if he would like an 'other' to drink.

and not because the word is weird. I just hate my friends.

[–]ayohbee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my head, that conversation plays out like the smores scene from Sandlot. "Want an other drink?" "How can I have another drink if I haven't had one yet?"

[–]deathbyboobies 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pop is for the 1950s. Coke is a brand name. Soda . . . is what it is.

"You want a pop?" "Pop a pill? Am I popping a balloon or package bubbles?"

"You want a coke?" "Sure!" hands Pepsi "I thought you were giving me a Coke..."

"You want a soda?" "Sure, what kind?"

[–]yelnats25 1 point2 points ago

Weird that North Carolina is so mixed. I've lived in different areas of the state and have heard a lot of different terms, and the only one that sticks out as odd here is "pop." Pretty much everything else is used regularly.

[–]DebitsOnTheLeft 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just a personal observation. I remember seeing this in a college in 2005 and it seemed fairly accurate of Oklahoma. Now though, Oklahoma County (Oklahoma City) seems to be overwhelming "pop." West Texas is definitely still comprised of "coke" people though.

[–]TheFamousMrKlaw 0 points1 point ago

El Paso County, Colorado -- A bastion of soda sanity surrounded by backward, perverse pop people.

This is extra funny if you know anything whatsoever about El Paso County

[–]eyedonutmadder 0 points1 point ago

I've lived in a few of these areas and now have the habit of saying either 'soda-pop' or 'coca-cola' - referring to any brand.

[–]ignatia_amara 0 points1 point ago

I'm a lone "soda" in a whole state of "pop." And my county is one of the 80-100% ones, too.

"Pop" just sounds so weird to me.

I have lived and traveled all over this country and lived in several places in Wisconsin. I can verify that I completely agree with this map except that I have never heard someone call Soda "Pop" in wisconsin without being called out for being a FIB. Wisconsin should be yellow, not split blue and yellow.

[–]TheHopelessGamer 2 points3 points ago

Just make sure you don't trip when running to grab that Kleenex. You might skin your knee and need a band-aid.

[–]aminaked 1 point2 points ago

[–]JacobMHS 0 points1 point ago

A generic carbonated beverage is a cola. However, we generally refer to all drinks as "drinks". More commonly, we refer to them by their names.

[–]monkeiboi -1 points0 points ago

They didn't miss it, it's just not prevalent enough to unseat 'soda.' The eastern MA counties have a lower percentage of 'soda' use precisely for this reason.

Yes... Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Seattle and Portland are all pretty small towns.

[–]the__itis 0 points1 point ago

yeah compared to NYC, Miami, DC etc..... I'd say so

[–]JSK23 0 points1 point ago

Detroit and Chicago are both bigger than Miami and DC and Cleveland is about the same size. Seattle and Portland are bigger than Miami (Seattle even over DC) so I'd say you still earned your down votes.

[–]the__itis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

meh i don't care about down votes..... Saying pop to define carbonated benefits screams small town to me.

I go by metro area population not actual city residence. Chicago is the only one in there that has a good size rank (3rd). DC is 7th Miami is 8th.

all the others are inverse of your statement. yes we can argue semantics blah blah.... fact of the matter is that pop is backbush american slang. I have a bunch of friends in chicago (not sure if they are native, but I have never heard any of them say pop, nor have I heard it when I visit).
