Bwahahahahaha.

I never understood the rules as a kid and wondered why they didn't just load up on nothing but ham.

[–]laurah1027 10 points11 points ago

I believe you could only take 5 of each item, so they would only set out 15 hams.

Would you like them Here or there?

I would not like them here or there. I would not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am

AMA Request: A Contestant on Supermarket Sweep

[–]sleighboy 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The most first-hand account I have ever read is in the description of this YouTube vid.

--snip-- Not to spoil the "secrets" of the sweep, but just some behind-the-scenes stuff for those that are interested:

As contestants, prior to the taping of your episode, they let you walk through the supermarket for 10 minutes, so you can get an idea of what things cost. That's one of the reasons you never saw people really looking closely at the prices of things while they were shopping. You had to have a game plan (and I did!)

The studio audience isn't nearly as big as they want you to believe. There are mirrors on both sides of the stage. With the exception of the contestants, the audience that is there are paid extras, which is why most of them are only slightly enthusiastic. They tape the inros of several episodes at once, so that once the game play begins, there is no audience. The rest of the game is done in an otherwise silent studio! So all of that extra clapping is added later. The store really was as big as a real grocery store (so to see it put together on a soundstage was pretty amazing). The food was expired, though. And some of them (like the meat) were, as you would expect, props.

The winners go home with a check in the amount of their sweep, but the 2nd and 3rd place contestants only got a sweatshirt! So it really was all or nothing, in terms of winning. --snip--

[–]JGibel 13 points14 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not entirely true. My parents were on Supermarket Sweep, and they were chosen randomly from the audience.

EDIT: apparantly, I was wrong. They had to try out.

Did they just allow you take the slips for video games or were video games entirely off limits? I think I always wondered how that would work, because my plan was to just run through the video game aisle and grab all the slips.

[–]cynthiadangus 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ooh, I just got nostalgia'd. I was watching this show when I was about 9 (it was followed by Shop til you Drop on PAX), and was interrupted when I heard sirens outside and saw flashing lights. Turns out my neighbor had had a heart attack and died (I don't know if it was because of the excitement of the show, or if he was even tuned in to the show for that matter)- I remember seeing a gurney with a body bag on it being wheeled into the medical examiner's vehicle.

TLDR Cool story bro.

[–]Frdl 5 points6 points ago

Supermarket Sweep killed your neighbor?

[–]PeeBagger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PAX was a network when you were 9? How old are you now? 11?

Fuck when I was a kid FOX didn't even exist, we had CBS, NBC, and the new ABC network which carried "Wide World of Sports". We also had a channel that carried DuMont.

[–]dmcnelly 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Christ, The DuMont Network? How old are you anyway?

[–]PeeBagger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Born in '52

[–]cynthiadangus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let me guess- there was nothing ever good on the two and a half channels that came in over the rabbit ears, but you watched anyway because you were thankful and that's just what good people did. And there were no remotes so you had to get up to switch the station, and it was an uphill walk both ways to the TV and back. And there were no TV dinners back then, if you didn't eat the handful of rusty nuts and bolts that Father worked a 26 hour day to pay for and provide to you, you didn't eat at all.

[–]PeeBagger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically. I didn't have a TV growing up, we went to the rich kids house and pretended to be friends with him to watch his family TV.

[–]Foxhound199 9 points10 points ago

I always figured there must have been rules to the sweep that were lost on me. As a kid, I remember yelling at the people going after the big stuff to just run their arms down the drug aisle, knocking everything off the shelf into their cart as they went.

Need AMA then. There are a lot of unanswered questions here.

[–]Decoyono 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always wondered why the contestants didn't just run down the aisle with their arms running along one of the shelves just pouring everything into the cart. But apparently there's a limit to what you can take?

[–]TokioHotel333 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, they're limited to 5 items but I had the same thought. When they're standing in the medicine aisle and grabbing only one or two brands, I didn't understand why they didn't just grab some of everything there!

[–]WinWasian 2 points3 points ago

[–]pipsqeek 1 point2 points ago

When I was a kid, I never understood why they just didn't stick their arm out into the shelf and let everything just fall into the trolley.

[–]TokioHotel333 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the same thought I had! It would seem like they'd gather more items in a faster fashion, resulting in a higher overall total.

[–]ChipWhip 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My dad was a grocery store manager or district manager most of my life and watching this game with him was never any fun because he would guess every price to within two or three cents and then would always know exactly the order the teams would finish in during the shopping spree even if they started at the same time. He also had some strategy he told me about and I wish I could remember what it was.

[–]verisimilarity 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If this were a show today, we'd all be talking about how it represented the obesity and triviality of our society. Nostalgia makes everything better.

[–]joshywood 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to wonder if the set would truly function as a grocery store. Like did the refrigerators actually work, did the food products actually have food in them or was everything just a hollow prop, etc.

[–]rheally 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On one of the youtube videos, one of the old contestants said the food was expired and the meats & huge wedges of cheese were props. Looking back at it, the bread in the big bread display looks fake as well.

I don't know how truthful this is, just what I read last night while watching youtube videos of the show.

[–]Nitronium 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved when they were trying to find a specific item during the challenges, and couldn't see the marked brand when it was right in front of their face and the camera man would zoom in on it like, "here, dummy dummy dummy." Or you could see it from your damned living room and then threw up your hands in amazement.

[–]hullobirdy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Love it! My mom used it, though. She'd give me money and have me run into the store to pick something up, reminding me to move fast, because I needed to train for supermarket sweep, and then she'd time me.

I remember watching this show at my cousins house with my Aunt (she introduced the show to us). Good times... One thing I didn't really understand though was why they didn't just sweep everything into their carts! Like, they'd choose specific brands and stuff then move on. Why not grab handfuls of everything (for instance, when you're in the medicine aisle)?

[–]MikeyMet 0 points1 point ago

Me and my sister wanted nothing more in the world than to be on this show. We had an extremely developed game-plan, and were certain that with the opportunity, we would conquer it as it had never been conquered before. Some of the contestants were dumb as a butt

I always wanted to be on this show just so I could shove my arm in the aisle and use it to just shovel EVERYTHING into a cart. I bet I could fill like 6+ carts before that shit was over. Every crappy contestant always got like 1-2.

Do any recordings of this exist anywhere on the internet? That would make my life.

They are currently playing episodes of this on the Gameshow Network. This show is awesome! Actually, that whole station is amazing.
