Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I want to believe that's real, but i dont think so. I got to tour NASA and they said the farthest astronauts can go is 10 feel away from the ship and also they are chained to the ship. But still a epic picture.

The Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) is an astronaut propulsion unit which was used by NASA on three space shuttle missions in 1984. The MMU allowed the astronauts to perform untethered EVA spacewalks at a distance from the shuttle.

"On the fourth day of the mission, astronauts McCandless and Stewart performed the first untethered spacewalk, operating the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) for the first time. McCandless, the first human Earth-orbiting satellite, ventured out 320 feet (98 m) from the orbiter" (link)

"Have fun orbiting as your body gradually falls toward the Earth and is eventually vaporized in the atmosphere. Godspeed, astronaut"

That's awesome, my only question (I asked the tour guide the same thing) is that how do they get back? I mean don't they have a time limit and you cant just swim through space, or can you?

He used the MMU to propel himself back to the orbiter. You obviously can't float around in space forever, but each of the STS-41-B spacewalks lasted over 5 hours.

...and you cant just swim through space, or can you?

In the (near) vacuum of space, there's no "substance" to propel yourself through, so, no, you can't "swim" through space.

I am very familiar with the mmu due to my insatiable nasa/space boner....I haven't seen any pics of anyone operating the mmu with their head towards the Earth or "upside down"...for lack of a better term.

OP, reveal thine self and the source of this image so mine space boner can be fapped into submission....

Could you imagine the fucking vertigo that would ensue for the average non astronaut if they were in that position....that feeling you get climbing the rope in gym x >9000....with vomiting
