Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Same advice as a BBW motorboat: Just lift and burrow.

It's less of a motorboat and more of the ostrich defense mechanism.

Good news for you: Terran buildings can move.

[–]Trapped_SCV 1 point2 points ago

Broodwar supply depots did not move. I trapped many poor SCVs that way.

I can remember playing 2s when I was still really new to the game and trapping an scv behind my depots. My friend told me to kill it because it was taking up supply.

I teched to drops, no man left behind ^

The mind is always on the newest iteration of the game, I'll be honest up until just now I hadn't thought of Brood War in over a year.

Except that Google+ launched on June 28th and already has over 10 million users despite being an invite only system. It is currently growing at somewhere around 20% every 24-36 hours.

Facebook took multiple years before it got to 10 million users.

[–]KingTalkieTiki 8 points9 points ago

Facebook wasnt also launched by one of the biggest companies in the world.

[–]AzureJahk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember seeing a 'Did You Know?' video saying Facebook reached 50million users in 2 years (comparing radio, tv, internet etc.)

10 Million in under a month is looking kickass. Not sure if I want an invite because I need an invite though.

[–]adamk19 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah these kinds of figures don't mean anything. Facebook was the first and strongest social networking service out there, and it took while for the idea to catch on with the public. Google is just swooping in.

[–]rpater 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Facebook clearly wasn't the first, and it wasn't the strongest when it came out. MySpace was pre-Facebook, and it was the largest social networking site until 2008. It took Facebook ~4 years to become the largest social networking site.

Google is just swooping in, but it is completely ridiculous to call 10 million people an 'empty bus'. Especially when access is limited and growth is insanely high currently.

I'm not sure if it will 'topple' Facebook, but it will most definitely force them to react and compete. I look at it more like how Chrome has forced IE and FF to react.

Edit: Grammar

[–]adamk19 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I may have worded my post a little strangely. Myspace was a social networking site; it allowed you to have a profile, friends, chat, find music, blah blah blah, but the emphasis was the profile and not the network. Facebook has always been about the idea of networking, and quite less about the profile. Myspace was fairly large, but the bulk of its users were whiny teenagers whining about their whiny perfect lives, or average looking people taking pictures of their most beautiful angles. Facebook started out with the american university age group and now we have grandparents and grandchildren with profiles.

I guess what I meant to say originally was that Facebook was the first networking site that everyone actually gave a shit about. Myspace never really caught on with the older generations, and even had a negative connotation with the public, but your local news channel today has a Facebook. I will say that myspace primed the world for facebook.

It would be nice to see something be a better facebook, but FB works so well for most people and aside from a pretty face and a familiar name, I fail to see what google+ has to offer over it.

[–]DrDan21 -5 points-4 points ago

[–]Etab 71 points72 points ago

I don't think it'll happen. Google+ isn't going to replace Facebook. If I had to guess, this happens:

  • Google+: Tech-savvy and (possibly) professional engagement. I don't know if it'll ever have a huge following.

  • Twitter: Short messaging service for exchanging information, sharing thoughts and engaging in conversations.

  • Facebook: The general-use social networking service for the "traditional" everyday person. Best way to keep in touch with people.

[–]Etab 40 points41 points ago

I had LinkedIn in mind when writing my post. I don't think LinkedIn has a very big future. The site just seems cumbersome to use, and most users simply sign up and then do nothing with their accounts.

[–]chase82 11 points12 points ago

Most recruiters use LinkedIn. It's a great way to find passive candidates. It's not exactly fun or a place to post pictures of the piece of bread you found that looks like a dick or a butt, however if you spend just a few minutes on it from time to time it might land you a job.

[–]EpochZero 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure if this is similar in other industries but LinkedIn is pretty huge in game development. If you find out who's running the recruiting/HR show at businesses you are interested in then you can link-up with them and it puts you on their radar.

Link up with every single person you can. If you leave a job - have your ex coworkers write recommendations for you. If you talk to someone at a conference/trade-show/etc add them to your network. Join the specialty groups (school/company alumns, common tech user, etc) - they will broadcast employment opportunities and new info.

Once your network gets to a certain point it all just sort of runs itself and you will find yourself strongly connected to your industry with recruiters knocking at your door.

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds useful! In my experience/industry/network, people sign up and then never touch their accounts again.

[–]KakunaUsedHarden 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand it. I signed up because someone at a conference told me I should. I have a couple of people on there but I just don't know why to use it.

The way your describing Google+ is the same way that people described Gmail when it first debuted and was invite-only. And now look at it.

[–]Etab 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's because Google answered a problem by bringing a good email service to the market.

Google+ doesn't seem to be solving a problem. If history is correct, Google is better at innovation then they are at following. Arguably, their most success has been through search, Gmail, web office tools, and revolutionizing online advertising. Most other products have had little success (Wave, Buzz).

[–]chadcf 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Though, as a counterpoint, Android is doing quite well by "following".

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, you're right. I forgot about Android and was thinking about more of the web-related products.

[–]visarga 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If Google can't win, it might spoil the game for the other corporate powers.

Android is an example -> free, open source operating system, basically giving away their work to other companies to profit from, but the impact is huge.

Another example: Netscape vs IE. Today Mozilla is Netscape's revenge and our win.

They could make social really open and that would usurp the power Facebook has amassed.

[–]luckyscs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is simply tying in ever part of my technological life together that makes Google so useful.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When Gmail first came out people said it didn't add anything to Hotmail or Yahoo mail until they started adding functionality to it. People said the same thing about Facebook when everyone was on Myspace.

Google+ just launched so it's obvious it doesn't appeal to many people yet. The first innovation I read about is they added video conferencing, so I can imagine the first companies might start looking into it. I also remember Google buying some game company last year, so it's only a matter of time before they implement that.

Right now it could go either way, but I expect it will take at least a few months to a year before we really know if it will succeed or not.

[–]janjko 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wave was very much innovation, and it failed. You don't have a pattern here. Nobody has, it's not that simple.

[–]tesseracter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

as much as you can say that social networking provides anything useful to the market, facebook has problems, and twitter has problems, and google+ is doing a decent job of solving the problems, without totally re-creating the two products. 'googley', if you will.

the really impressive thing is what is happening inside google, with lots of teams looking to integrate their work into google+. we all know that google has a massive amount of brain power, and until now they have been trying their projects out, testing the waters. google+ has been a rallying force for many teams to pull towards. so many eyes, so many brains all with frustrations about a known quantifiable field(social networking) --brings to mind when google started, search was already on the internet, but google added to it and made it their own.

[–]mefuzzy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

E-mail was not 'bad' then. You click send, it arrives, you can't explain that.

Google, like Apple, created a need we did not know we want. And they seem to do better in enhancing current technologies or platforms we operate in rather than pure innovation.

Google itself was a search engine, albeit using a different algorithm. But they was not the one that started the trend or first to do it.

It was the same with GMail, Chrome, Android and perhaps now, G+. Buzz was again, another failure in replacing twitter. The only thing that I think they can claim as first or non 'mainstream' thing they tried to populate was Wave and that failed.

[–]Wanderlustfull 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is exactly the conversation I was having with a friend a few nights ago. There is really no need for G+ to replace Facebook and/or Twitter. Each have their place and their uses - they can all run along side and compliment each other.

[–]marvaden 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At this point, my only reason for wanting something to replace Facebook is simply because of the fact that they haven't fixed the chat protocol's inability to stay connected as well as other bugs. It honestly turns me off from a site when it doesn't fix well known and obvious bugs. Most people don't care about this, so it's not going anywhere for a while. Not until something else takes care of all needs.

[–]tesseracter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

facebook is going to need to respond to google. competition is good for us. if facebook makes changes that are piss poor, people will leave a la digg or myspace. if they do a good job, they will find strength in their market and google+ will live beside it for a while.

[–]psiphre 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

facebook would have to work really hard to murder itself the way digg did.

[–]mbcs09 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Twitter is my go-to when I'm actually out of the house and feel the need to express something quickly (obviously... it's Twitter. Plus it syncs with Facebook so you kill two birds with one stone), Facebook is how I keep in touch with most friends and family, and most of my closer friends or coworkers are mainly connected to me through Google+. There's really no need to "replace" any one of them when you don't really have to make a choice between them.

[–]BoonTobias 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you hit the nail in the coffin there etab. Google will never be able to pull in party girls, and without party girls you can't have more people join. Pretty simple really.

The average person has no idea what g+ is

[–]An1mal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

at the rate of which facebook rolls out new terrible ideas such as the chat, I beg to differ.

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems Facebook's users tend to complain about interface changes, but then forget about them a few weeks later.

[–]Yangoose 2 points3 points ago

3-4 years ago Myspace was the media darling that everyone loved to talk about. They went from hot stuff to "are they still around?" very quickly.

The real hook that Google has is how many people are already using their other sites (most search). You don't sit there with a blank screen and decide whether you're going to Facebook or Google +. For most people you're already on Google so Facebook has to give you a reason to leave.

[–]staffell 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everybody keeps using the "MySpace" argument, but the fact is, Facebook is FAR more popular, well known and user friendly than myspace ever was.

The problem is that nobody really needs anything more than facebook as a social networking platform, even if it is lacking some nice features that Google+ has.

[–]soxy 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And who is to say Facebook won't incorporate some of those features in the future?

Bottom line is, Google+ needs to overcome people's first reaction to post on facebook. I had some huge news this past weekend and wanted as many of my friends to hear it as possible, I went to Facebook no question, didn't even post it to Google+ because everyone who would see it there is on Facebook too.

[–]timmeh87 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um Id like to add something to this - I use social networking to fuck around, so I had to make a completely separate email for my Google+, so my boss and co-workers cant see my stupid made up profile information and etc.

Therefore, I have to go through the stupid process of switching google accounts just to look at my barren, empty google+ wall

[–]EmpyClaw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a big problem. I have two gmail accounts, one for more professional correspondence and the like. I have that one connected to my casual account, so I can do everything from the one email. I got my invite through my "professional" email, and now I need to log out of my email that has everything connected, Youtube, and anything else my Google account is hooked up with just go use G+. I don't see myself using Google+ a lot, because of that... The invite system kinda shot them in the foot on that one.

[–]mickeymongoose 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can't you just invite your other gmail account from your current Googleplusified account?

[–]timmeh87 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but read above for problems with multiple google accounts. You have to keep switching, Its annoying. Google has a little "multiple signin" feature, but it works pretty crappily and you dont always stay signed into the secondary account

[–]EmpyClaw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been having trouble with invites, but I should give it a try some more, as this seems to be the most reasonable solution. My only concern would be that I couldn't display my professional email for contact details, but I imagine there are some settings that would address that.

It's a bit annoying that I need to do this at all. Without an invite system, the whole trouble would have been avoided.

But yes, your solution is simple and sensible. A tip of the hat.

[–]TlCKETS 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would be easy enough just to have a professional circle and deal with it that way. You can adjust your sharing settings per-circle so that you can deal with separate groups of people.

[–]timmeh87 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not exactly though. My professional email is composed of my full real name, which I don't necessarily want to share. And then when I set a picture in google+, it shows through to my professional email's "google profile". So now I have my real name associated with my profile picture for everyone to look at. Strike 1

Strike 2, is that im not sure how these "circles" and privacy settings are supposed to work, but I can see my friends whole google+ wall and everything hes said, even when Im not signed in. Im just pasting the link into the address bar....

Either that, or the existing users will grow tired of the small number of similar users and give up on the service. Google Wave is a perfect example of this.

" Google+: Tech-savvy and (possibly) professional engagement. I don't know if it'll ever have a huge following."

I'm going to have to say no to that one. I got a Google + invite from a friend of mine last night. He's got 90+ people in his circles most of them I know. Three of them are "tech savvy" he is one of them and one is me the other is a co worker, 15 of them are high school teachers, 4 are his family. The rest are people from around our non technical employer and some old friends we both share from high school and college. None of them are technical.

Its almost an exact mirror of his Facebook friends list minus the ones he did not know personally.

I sent out my invites last night, its basically a slimmed down version of my Facebook friends too, minus the ones I find annoying and the ones I do not know.

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are these people actively using Google+? In other words, do they interact with other users on Google+ on a daily/regular basis?

[–]greenbird23 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At the moment, for the week that it seems most of them have been on it, yes. Looking at facebook posts reflects that they are not unique interactions but copy and past posts from one to another. The only unique posts I've seen are posts on FB which say they are in the process of moving to G+.

So I'm seeing a migration with some being left behind on purpose.

I'm using Google+ right now and it's nothing to write home about yet. I mean sure it looks better initially because there are no ads but that's about all it has going for it. I mean dragging and dropping people you know into circles to label them as friend, family, coworker, etc. isn't that spectacular. It just makes it easier to label people in the literal sense.

[–]timmeh87 -2 points-1 points ago

I honestly don't understand what all the hype about google+ is. I just don't. Sure, it might end up pretty big/successful, but as far as I can tell it's quite similar to facebook. Honestly, I have very few complaints about facebook, once you get used to looking past the posts and comments of people you don't care about (or just defriend/hide them) and deal with their occasional layout changes, it's still working just fine...

google plus looks promising because no ones on it. the problem with fb and myspace is people. once people start using it and annoying you, and they will, and google makes usability changes people will lose esteem for it

[–]bwat47 7 points8 points ago

Myspace killed myspace. The horrible site design, and obnoxious profile pages. people flocked to facebook which was a far cleaner, faster alternative.

[–]verrtex 13 points14 points ago

Why Google wave failed? Because of 3 reasons:

  1. They never gave a clear and CONCRETE explanation about what the Google wave is. All the videos and texts that they had about the Google wave were very general. They were just saying that it is very cool and revolutionary but never said what exactly it is.

  2. The access was restricted. I always wanted to try it but could not because I needed invitation and I did not get it. I wanted to use it but I could not.

  3. When I got an invitation to the Google wave I could not try it because you cannot try it alone. You need somebody else to try it.

I am afraid that Google+ will fail because of the same 3 reasons!

[–]rez410 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. When people say "oh well gmail was successful and they did the same thing" that doesn't fly. You can be the only person on the planet with gmail and it would still be awesome for you. Wave and + needs both people to have the service.

[–]visarga 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The access was restricted. I always wanted to try it but could not because I needed invitation and I did not get it. I wanted to use it but I could not.

I got an invite, but my girlfriend had to wait for a couple of weeks. When she finally got an invite, she was like, meh. I have more important things on my mind. I'll look at it tomorrow. G+ lost all it's impact. So much for making people jockey for invites.

When I got an invitation to the Google wave I could not try it because you cannot try it alone. You need somebody else to try it.

Maybe Google should identify clusters of people by analyzing Gmail and group invite everyone at once.

[–]rac3r5 0 points1 point ago

You know I was thinking the same thing. I actually watched all those google wave videos and I loved it. But the invite system was horrible. Once I got the invite, I lost interest. I would actually like MS Outlook license some of the tech to use. I get so many e-mails from work and it would be awesome to have similar tech there.

[–]Dark_Shroud 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

4th It was just a more advanced version of IRC without any of the admin tools. And when those tools were finally added it was already too late as spammers & trolls had already vandalized the big active waves.

I got in to Wave in the first round of invites. I logged in a total of two times to check out what was being done with it. My final thought was I might try to really use it if there was a desktop client.

[–]cryer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Main reason why G+ will not supplant FB: People. The sheer amount of people on FB. No one is going to switch if they don't have to or if they don't need to. And with FB having such name recognition, it's even less likely to happen. The average person only directly thinks of Google in terms of it mistakenly being the web itself or for search while FB is for sharing pictures and social stuff.

this g+ love is getting retarded. reddit, in all its infinite hatred of hipsters seems to love this 'innovation' because it's new and no-one's on it.

it's nice, i like circles and hangouts, i have like 5 friends on it but i'm enjoying the functionality and eagerly awaiting the public api and business profiles to see what it can do but it's not going to take down fb.

it's attractive to tech-savvy, 18-30 males which surprisingly, is reddit's primary userbase but you want to know where the social media race is won? the mainstream market.

it has nothing to appeal to the mainstream market, nothing to attract the fb-drones who are familiar with the platform, have documented their waking life with it thus far, and have spent significant effort accruing their x-thousand 'friends'. Myspace > FB was a big jump but it was made because it offered something myspace didn't. Google doesn't. Google offers the same functionality facebook does albeit through a nicer, cleaner interface and with better profile and friend management tools. These things however, will not appeal to anyone other than us and we're not a sufficient userbase to sustain a development of this type.

[–]rabidkillercow 1 point2 points ago

Hey guys, Google made a clone of Facebook! It's really cool! It doesn't really innovate with any few features, but let's all pretend like it does! Remember those friends lists that Facebook has used for privacy for years? Let's pretend those doesn't exist, because Google copied them!

Considering the amount of users Facebook has and how many Google+ has, Google wouldn't be anything more than a Pedicab compared to a station wagon at this moment.

It also wouldn't be pushing the station wagon out of the way. Instead it would be waiting in the parking lot for someone to lazy to walk.

Sure this is said a billion times, but to me Google+ just feels right.
I do admit, tech savvy people will pick up to it quicker than most, but i don't see that being too big of an issue. Ever try to explain facebook to an older person, or someone who doesn't use computers often? Its like taking 2 well sharpened pencils and ramming them into each ear. THis is no different :D

Facebook isn't the one that should be worried, Twitter is. Facebook will be fine, it's core crowd wasn't just taken away. Google+ Offers the primary feature Twitter had (Being able to follow someone without them following you in return) and than improved on it with the circles thing (meaning I can separate my friends, family, and famous people which amuse me)

[–]visarga 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

G+ might succeed if they integrate it with already popular Google products in a non-annoying and useful way.

I just hope the desperation of the Google and G+ team will produce something revolutionary, eventually. They are smart. They have the brains and the CPUs to do it.

On a side note - I was hoping that "Sparks" would be an automated reddit like feed, but it is full of crappy content. Meh.
