Interesting posting.

Am I right in thinking you were born after that era?

I was a kid in the 40's and 50's, and most of the mothers I remember were competent, even tough managers of their lives and families... and they did to a large extent support their daughters in making choices about their own lives.

Mothers then were stricter, I will agree...but they were also fierce in protecting their kids from danger. I remember one time roaming in the fields near home, a bunch of us (boys and girls) met a hobo who tried to entice us to return later. One of us informed a parent, who immediately set up a posse of mothers armed with sticks, bats and kitchen utensils and set off to search for this suspicious person.

Lucky for him, they didn't find him.

I don't understand why people talk about the 50s as if women were in chains and whipped or something. They say they were oppressed and lived in such horrible conditions and all, but I don't think they were anywhere near as miserable as those people make them out to be. Times were different, ideals were different, society's structure was different, deal with it.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

You get that, and you also get people talking about the 50s as a beautiful, perfect time where men were manly, ladies took care of the home and looked perfect doing so, and children were polite and well-groomed. I highly doubt either is close to the truth.

[–]justdoitok 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why can't they both be the truth?

Edit: whoa now I didn't mean to spark a whole thing about women in the workforce (I'm not really sure how it lead to that) I was just saying that there is room for contradiction when assessing the 50s: you can simultaneously critique and idealize the same values and era and not have to take a militant stance or boldly denounce/herald it as either the dark ages or some lost past utopia.

But since gender work force issues have been brought up: look at Holland. They have a rather interesting set up known as the 1 and a half earner wage. The husbands work full time and women work part time (men and women are almost equally employed- very few stay at home anybodies) though something like 80 of part time employees there are women. Its rather unique and not something you would expect from such a liberal place.

Also in German and Scandanavian countries it is a liability to hire a woman because of the potential that she could have kids: the governments there require companies to give a shit ton of paid leave so to combat this potential for hiring discrimination you have more recent laws that require that part of this leave be taken by BOTH of the parents (I'm pretty sure that's just Sweden though). So looking at how things are in other countries is interesting, if not entirely relevant to exactly what any of you below are talking about.

Because then women would want to go back to that ideal lifestyle and leave the corporate rat race. Employers would have to triple salaries to find good male employees.

Can't have that.

We need slave wages.

[–]exactlycake 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you just blame low wages on women wanting jobs?

[–]Splitshadow 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It logically follows that if 51% of the workforce suddenly disappeared that the lower supply of workers would increase the demand for workers, and thus salaries. It would also hamper development and progress though.

[–]exactlycake 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would raise salaries so that men could support their families in the same way that a men and women working at home would (as long as the parents are working at similar salaries). The pay wouldn't necessarily change, just that only one parent would work. You would still be as rich or as poor as you would have otherwise.

Still, say your mother made a higher salary then your father, bumping his pay up three times more, but wiping out her pay would leave your family poorer then they started.

[–]Splitshadow 0 points1 point ago

It really depends on the family. I know that if my mother quit working and my father's pay were doubled, our income would increase by 40% because my mother is a teacher. But the thing is, every working person would have a higher salary if 51% of the workforce disappeared. It isn't sexism or hatred or any of that nonsense.

[–]exactlycake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom made $70,000 more then my dad did before he was laid off. If it's not sexism or hatred from the OP's comment, then why is it that, in his mind, women need to leave, not men? I'm sure my mom would be thrilled if her salary was doubled just because my father left the work force, but if my mother left the workforce, then my father would have to support the family on his measly doubled-pay.

Even after my fathers pay was doubled, my mother still would have made $40,000 more then that, just by herself. They would be losing $70,000 a year.

Wages have gone down drastically when women flooded the job market.

  • companies now pay much less per 2 employees.

  • Banks and government can collect more money and taxes with a bigger workforce.

  • increases globalization with low birth-rates and more immigration.

  • makes children more prone to being influenced, indoctrinated by government which sees it as a surrogate parent while both parents work outdoors.

1.- America has some of the highest wages in the world. In my mind, Americans are not allowed to complain about low wages, particularly when 75% of the people in my country are considered by the UN, World Bank, IMF, and the OAS as "middle class" when making half of America's minimum wage or less.

2.- Yes. More workers means less price per worker (or wage). This is simple economics. Just as immigrants and outsourcing lower wages, women in the workforce also lower wages. It IS that simple. Having said that, most of the hardest, most qualified workers I've ever met are women.

Countries like Holland has inadequate birth-rates, and will require about 2 million immigrants in the future. About 1 in 3 citizens is not ethnic Dutch anymore. It's a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society, and the economy cannot survive without immigrants.

Less than 10% of women work full-time see this article.

I work in a small town for a family business. The parents moved there around 1960. At that time, the high school had a really high dropout rate and a zero percent college entrance rate. The mother of the family, now around 75ish, personally took it upon herself to go get a teaching degree, got onto the school board, became the matriarch of Kindergarten reading and quite literally made the whole fucking town literate.

You go around visiting all the old ladies in this redneck little grease spot of town, and they are fierce, sharp, witty people that NOBODY fucks with.

Maybe women weren't running multi-national corporations back then, but they sure as fuck weren't just sitting around knitting aprons for themselves either. They were running the communities they lived in from behind the scenes.

Are things better now? Perhaps in availability of life path choices, yes. Were women slobbering dolts useful for little more than baking muffins and pouring their husbands' evening cocktails back then? Wrong-go.

[–]exactlycake 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly this. Some people have this perception that without the movement to equality, women were slobbering idiots. This is because the general perception of women is that of a slobbering idiot, or a slut, or someone with lower class standing.

Even today some women still feel like it's all or nothing. Either I'm a bored stay at home mother, or I'm a childless business women. Either I'm a good christian women who follows the word of my husband, or I'm a feminist who belittles men and never shaves. Obviously none of these actually pertain to real life. You can work and have children, you can be a stay at home mother with real world experience and hobbies. You can be a christian feminist, you can be a feminist who's a great mother and a caring wife.

The "idealistic life" of the women and men of the past is sugar-coated propaganda, but to imagine that the women of the past had zero influence in the lives of the men who loved them is also a load of steaming bullshit.

The fact is, the men and women of today are not so different from the men and women of yesterday. There never was an ideal life, or an ideal path. There never was a perfect home unit. People who grasp onto those concepts as truth are ignoring history.

I am not saying I disagree with your or stupidlyugly's statements, but I don't think that the subject you two discuss is at all what this post is trying to convey.

The OP is obviously satirizing the 1950's standard stereotype for a woman--the Leave It to Beaver style housewife with coiffed hair, perfect makeup and dress, and a tidy house. She spends her time cooking for her family, doing laundry, and tending to her husband's and children's needs and wants, and she's perfectly happy about that being the full extent of her life.

[–]exactlycake 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh no, I agree with you that the OP is satirizing the 1950's standard stereotype for a woman. I was basically releasing my stress about the rest of the comments here. There are a good amount of misogynistic comments here, and it makes me sad.

It reminds me of when I took my first political course, I met so, so many men who actually thought that the 1940s women was the ideal, as was the 1940s man. These people obviously don't talk to their grandparents.

[–]justanothercommenter -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a great comment. People weren't fucking stealing their kids on the street and chopping them up like they do today either. Women took care of their kids and knew immediately when sick fuckers came into their neighborhoods.

I have a Betty Crocker cookbook from 1969 that my mother gave me. In the Eggs section it reads:

The man you marry will know the way he likes his eggs. And chances are he'll be fussy about them. So it behooves a good wife to know how to make an egg behave in six basic ways.

I can't help but laugh, yet cringe, every time I read that.

[–]thedevguy 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't decide who that is more insulting to - women, for the idea that they exist to please a man. Or men, for the idea that they are such enormous jackasses that they'd be fussy about a goddamn egg.

[–]someoneiswrongonthe 2 points3 points ago

[–]Warpedme 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, I'm a guy and I think this is good advice for both sexes. I know exactly how my woman likes her eggs. Personally I think knowing what to cook to wake your woman up with breakfast in bed is one of the keys to keeping her happy and horny. I don't care how bad her week was, if you wake her up with breakfast in bed on Saturday morning, you will be having some amazing sex at some point that day (brotip: clean as you cook boys, if she has to clean up when she comes down, it ruins the entire effect).

What i think people need to put into perspective is that work wasn't all its cracked up to be now. Now a days its easy to go to college and have "dreams and goals" but if you operate under the assumption that her husband worked at the local factory....she got the much better deal. The difference between now and then is that people DIDN'T want to work but now for some reason people see it as a good thing
