Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Just did it with my brother. I didn't really feel much pain, but I went into shock, does that count?

My brother felt pain, and jumped 3 feet of the ground but that's about it. He can't tell if it was pain from him clenching his body though.

Worth noting the patients are being warned, and the guy is hardly hitting the hands. Me and my bro used a kitchen knife and when he did it to me half the thumb cut off. : \ I'm also sensitive to my own blood / injury.

[–]aphemix 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was wondering as I watched that video what the effects would be like if I were to chop off the end of a finger real quick with a cigar clipper or something. I wondered, would it induce a reverse phantom limb type of condition? Would it worsen with the addition of fake blood? Would it persist until the real hand was viewed once more, or, even worse, until the perception of the hand was calibrated anew with an intact rubber hand? I'd be interested in testing it, but I don't exactly feel like experiencing the realistic sensation of a severed finger. Though I guess I could always just look at the dummy hand backwards through a pair of binoculars until I got the whole shit sorted out, how bad could it be.

anybody else ever see Ramachandran talk about the device he used to cure phantom limb syndrome?

[–]cowhead 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The sort of reverse of this can be used to treat people with phantom limb pain. Some people who have lost a limb experience an excruciating 'clinching' feeling in the limb that can be unclenched if they trick their brain into thinking that the healthy limb is the phantom limb.

I tried it with just static. I eventually hallucinated an entire Van Halen song. It took like 10 min to start though.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

Maybe when you turned the radio to static you actually got a bit of a music station that was playing Van Halen?

[–]srika 0 points1 point ago

It should be enough to complete cover your eyes, right? What's the deal with Ping-Pong balls?

[–]Starly24 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think with ping pong balls it allows your eyes to be open with nothing pressing on them and all you can see is white, not black as you normally see if you cover your eyes.

[–]burnin8r28 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's so the eyes can only see white light. Less to perceive. source: http://mindhacks.com/2008/11/17/ganzfeld-hallucinations/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How long did you try it? It takes a while for it to "kick in."

Edit: Also it helps for the static to be pretty loud/close to your head to block out any other ambient noise.

You can also try this: Lie down on your stomach, close your eyes and have a friend hold your arms up off the ground and hold them for a minute or so. Then have your friend bring your arms down very slowly. Eventually it will start to feel as if your arms are going right through the floor. It's okay.

Or you can try to stand in a door frame. Put your arms to your side and then lift them keeping them completely straight. When you hit the door frame with the back of your hands, you just keep pushing for as long as you can can endure. Once you step away and let them relax, they lift themselves.

[–]architrave 2 points3 points ago

An alternate to this is to get a friend and hold your hands about 10 cm apart, vertically. Get your friend to do the same, only on the outside of your hands. Have them push inwards, and you push outwards. After about 20-30 seconds, let go and you'll feel like you're holding a ball of energy. It's crazy.

[–]muffinheart 1 point2 points ago

Alternatively, lie on your back. Get two friends to pick you up at your arms and legs for about a minute.

Get them to let you down gently. You'll feel like you're sinking into the ground.

Instead of touching the nose, try touching the boobs (and your chest) instead. After a while it will feel as if you have boobs, really long boobs. *other person must have boobs.

Alternatively, touch your nose and the girls boobs. It will feel as if you have really long boobs instead of a nose. If it doesn't work, at least you have been touching boobs.

Look up into the air on a clear night, and begin spinning with your arms out while looking at the sky. It is very important that you focus directly at a single star, and after 40-60 seconds, stop spinning, look forward, and clap your hands once. You should fall to the ground and be unable to get up for a moment. The longer you spin, the better it works. I find myself unconsciously spinning faster and faster, but don't normally notice this, and this is normal.

[–]schwejk 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I demand more take-up for gunnar120's spastic star spin! I imagine the clapping to be a crucial element.

[–]notomniscient 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Our version of it had a broom you would hold up in the air with the handle pointing at the sky. You'd keep your focus at the top of the broom while spinning and then the idea was to then put the broom down in front of you and jump over it. Hilarity ensues for both those watching, and the participant who finds his sense of gravity a bit off.

[–]gunnar120 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I'm going to reply to all of you. You get incredibly disoriented while spinning, and because you are spinning, it starts to look less like stars, and more like circles. I'm guessing it's the combination of blood rushing to your arms, and getting dizzy, and when you clap it just kind of shocks you (maybe too much stimuli?) and your system kind of shuts down.

[–]hahahaNope 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is there a name for this, so I can do further reading on it? Or can you just explain why this is? Is it just because you're dizzy as hell or is there a legit reason you fall over once you clap?

[–]gunnar120 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is another mind-hack that I know and has the strongest effect.

Tilt your head upwards and close your eyes.

Then you visualize and imagine a salt-shaker in the palm of your hand.

Pretend to shake a bit of salt into your mouth with your eyes closed and head upwards and you will actually taste the salt.

This also works if you visualize/imagine pepper.

I went on a tour of a haunted theatre for Halloween and the tour guides had us do something similar to the Ganzfeld procedure to communicate with the ghosts. We were in a dark room instead of the ping pong ball thing. The ghost hunters call it Electronic Voice Phenomenon

There was at least one person per small group that heard a voice in the static. When we were in a pitch black room with no sound, a few people saw light flashes or dots of light.

I used to like playing 'mind fucks' like these on my friends whilst off our faces.

One time i got a friend lying on his back with one eye closed and the other open but covered with a glass coke bottle. Then went into a trippy story that come to think of it was like a hypnosis script. It sort of went..."imagine you are an ashtray. You are lying on a coffee table. There are people all around you chatting, but all you can hear is muffled noises and feel the bumps and the hum of people having a good time"...blah blah blah. Basically tripping him out into a kind of trance. Then just as i felt he was into it mid sentence and out of nowhere, I stubbed a lit cigarette into the bottle just above his open eye.

He cried and laughed and pissed and shit

Once when we were teenagers and hanging out smoking weed and being silly, Amber decided to do one of these mind tricks with our friend Don. It's the one where you hold your finger really close to the person's forehead in between their eyes and they can "feel" your finger even though it's not actually touching because the brain sees it coming and expects the sensation. Pretty basic, and kinda boring, right?

Well, Amber was kind of a ditz and for some odd reason thought that instead of your finger, you're supposed to do it with a lit cigarette. She was also quite high and couldn't hold her hand very steady. Don had that scar between his eyes for the rest of high school.

I've done the Ganzfeld Experiment a few times.

If you want to do it - use a red light source in the room. The halved ping pong balls diffuse red light and it's very calming.

Make sure the room you're in is perfectly warm enough - not hot, not cold.

Make sure the bed you're lying on is perfectly comfortable.

Also, use headphones to listen to static instead of a radio in the room (which you can tell where the sound is coming from)

All of the above help you to cut out external stimulus, and you'll then go on a crazy voyage. But rather than a few minutes, it usually takes 30-60 minutes for it to start. And never overly wild (you need a proper sensory deprivation chamber for that).

I heard about it a few years ago, and every year, I'll try it. It's worth doing, even if for no other reason that having an incredibly relaxed few hours!

[–]Dislexsick 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Minor annoyance: You wont find a radio station playing static, rather the absence of a station makes static.

[–]NathanFive 0 points1 point ago

I came here to say exactly this. Luckily i did CTRL+F on 'station'.

For me, a 'scientific' instruction starting with such nonsense makes me cringe and stop reading it.

The Rubber Hand trick works a whole lot better if someone holds a gom jabbar to your neck while they do it.

What happened to the others who tried this trick? They tried and failed?

Oh, no, they tried and died.

[–]Tom_Wheeler[S] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The ping-pong balls are so you can open your eyes and still see nothing. Your eyes have to be open for it to work.

[–]leaptheman 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your eyes can be closed, but it will take much longer for the brain to start searching for imagery and takes a fair bit of non-concentration on absolutely nothing at all.

Actually, just use the fucking ping pong halves.

Lie on the floor or a sofa on your back and have a friend hold your leg at about 45 degree. Relax that leg completely and have them hold it there for a few minutes. This will make your brain think your leg is parallel to the other one. Have them slowly lower that leg and it will feel like it's going through the floor.

turning the radio to a station playing static

Well, I tried that, but it just doesn't work. No station was playing static, just news, music, etc. Maybe this was a good thing because I stopped the experiment before I had to destroy a ping-pong ball.

Well I was with a couple of friends and we put on the ping pongs and we made a static noise and at first it looked like ocean waves and lots of colors and shapes. It wasn't that much the first time but the more we tried it the more vivid the images came. Like once I saw a big spider that was so detailed you could see the hairs.

We tried again but instead of using static we used those digital drugs audio files that never actually work, but we wanted to see what the combination would be like.

Things got crazy.

The first time I did it it was like falling asleep in a way that I wouldn't move, open my eyes, speak, or hear any outside noises. But I was pretty self aware. The visions were less vivid, more just shapes and colors. But I felt so funny, it was almost as if I was laughing, but I couldn't really tell. I awoke with a huge jolt, and for some reason I was very flustered. My friend woke me up because I was laughing and flailing around.

It was a lot of fun, though so I tried it one last time. This time was like the last, except without the laughing. Just the same colores and shapes. The thing that was different was I felt like I could project myself. I was in this sort of half asleep state, but I could feel myself moving away from my body. I can't really explain how it felt exactly. It was strange.

So yeah.

I like it. I never heard any dead folk, but it did make me feel really relaxed.

Edit: I wanted to mention that these effects didn't happen instantly. I would have to lay down for at least 10 to 15 minutes before anything happened. So don't give up if you lay down for 5 minutes and nothing happens.

That's damn hypnosis there, son. Good job on that, you should do it to yourself more. Alternate states of consciousness, whether drug or self-induced, are pretty amazing.

The app I use doesn't say the frequency, but I would say 80% speed (so quite fast). Then just hold the LED (this will only work with the iPhone 4) up to one (or both) of your eyes and close them, and let the lights follow

So it's just a strobe light on the screen, or am I missing something?

[–]cmeerdog 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Conrad spent years researching and producing the film; the patterns are based on different brain waves. It is a 16mm film so it was produced 1 frame at a time, based on his frame rate calculations. Wish I had a good link for you, but everything I have regarding the complexity of the film is photocopied...

[–]Jimpow 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For Ganzfeld is fairly important to ensure you are as much as possible, experiencing a lack of external stimulus, noises, touching, etc. It's very similar to being able to paralyze yourself in the same situation, the conditions and your ability to lay there for a long enough time without twitching or moving around need to be correct though.
