See, I just don't get how that's possible with a legitimate glass door. How is it not manufactured to withstand a casual run-in by an average-weight joe? Did he just HAPPEN to hit the EXACT right pressure point with his nose to make it shatter all at once?

I just don't get it.

[–]Complexified[S] 100 points101 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These glass panes are designed to shatter rather than break into large sharp pieces. A large sharp piece of glass falling on someone can potentially kill them.

[–]fame_throwa 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did this when I was two years old. The glass nearly cut me in half. The doctors had to staple me back together... to this day I have a scar that nearly goes all the way around my midsection. When people ask, I tell them that it had to do with sharks and a Harley.

[–]aaronbot3000 9 points10 points ago

That kind of glass is called tempered glass, which crumbles due to high internal stresses.

[–]judgej2 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its surface is heated and cooled down rapidly, and forms a tight seal that is under tension. The inside of the glass is just on the point of shattering at the slightest provocation, and only the tempered surface holds it together. Break that surface and BAM! The hole pane shatters into a million tiny pieces, none of which will be bit enough to chop you in half.

With a polarised filter you can see the vertical lines on tempered windscreen windows. Those lines are where the water is squirted on the hot glass during the tempering process.

[–]OCDTrigger 1 point2 points ago

The whole pane

[–]Wingzero 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would say most glass you could accidentally come into contact with is tempered to break into cubes rather than shards. But that doesn't mean it's made to be weak-- I'm pretty amazed that that casual jog was able to shatter it completely.

[–]happyscrappy 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But they're not going to shatter just walking into it like that. If you don't lead with a sharp object (and the glass isn't pre-scratched), you'll just be bounced back.

See the Mythbusters episode.

btw, it's called tempered glass.

[–]OneWhoHenpecksGiants 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but how do we know how many people have bumped into that glass. He could have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]happyscrappy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just bumping into it won't cause damage, but yeah, it's probably some form of cumulative damage. Or maybe the guy just had his car key in his hand or and that's what struck the glass, creating a concentrated force.

[–]OneWhoHenpecksGiants 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True because they would most likely be to the side where tempered glass is the weakest.

[–]edwardkmett 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've personally shattered a pane of tempered glass by falling backwards after being pushed where the point of impact was just my shoulder blades, which started 6 inches away from the glass. If he had a good head of steam on him its not all that implausible.

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, except it did...

[–]happyscrappy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are plenty of explanations as to why it shattered.

1 and #2 are right there in my post.

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess I missed your implication. You mean to say it's staged?

[–]happyscrappy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He could have been carrying a sharp object, the glass could have been previously scratched (from cleaning, leaning stuff against it). Or there are other possibilities, including it being staged.

But under normal conditions, if you walk or run into a place of tempered glass, it usually isn't going to shatter, it'll just bounce you back.

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see what you mean now.

[–]pillowplumper 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, that would make a lot more sense.

[–]i-hate-digg -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What you're referring to is tempered glass, but there's two problems with your theory. One, not all glass doors have it (due to expense) and two, if you look at the gif you can clearly see large portions of glass falling on him. I hope he survived.

[–]Wingzero 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Federal Law actually requires all glass within a certain distance to a door to be tempered, which would mean by law all glass doors have to be tempered glass. Then again, that's just the US, and I don't know where this is from.

[–]Crossbowman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the United States, since 1977 Federal law has required glass located within 18 in (46 cm) of a floor or doorway to be tempered.[1]

and

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the glass and plastics industries, drafted a standard for safety glazing materials used in door and other applications. This was adopted in 1977 as a federal law and superseded existing codes or ordinances. Fully tempered glass and laminated glass comply with the provisions of the federal safety glazing law.

Is this better for you? It's the Consumer Product Safety Commission's Federal regulations on glass to be used,

(1) Storm doors or combination doors. (2) Doors. (3) Bathtub doors and enclosures. (4) Shower doors and enclosures. (5) [Reserved] (6) Sliding glass doors (patio-type).

And I'm pretty sure in the last 34 years they've probably brought more scope to the list.

Electronic Code of Federal Regulations

Title 16: Commercial Practices

PART 1201—SAFETY STANDARD FOR ARCHITECTURAL GLAZING MATERIALS

This part 1201, a consumer product safety standard

The effective date of this part 1201 shall be July 6, 1977

Tell me what part of this is not an official Federal Regulation? Yes, a study is within it, which is what their Regulations are based on. But it is a federal code.

Except if the window was tempered glass like you are suggesting it would be much more durable than the glass depicted in the gif; think for example of the windshield of a car. It seems the event took place in the year 2010, creating 2 possibilities:

1.) The country in which this gif takes place has similar building codes to the US in which (since 1977) any glass 18" from a door or floor must be tempered. Tempered glass can be rated anywhere from 40 to 100 MPa (40 MPa = 5800 Psi) so I find it unlikely this unfortunate subject had enough mass or momentum to break a tempered glass window.

2.) The gif took place in a country without these regulations, or in a building where these regulations had not been followed. If this was the case this gif would have been posted in r/WTF with a NSFL tag, because it would have show this man getting the fuck cut out of him by 50 pounds of jagged glass slicing him to ribbons. Maybe there are more possibilities, but my guess would be this gif is fake or somehow staged. I did find it very funny though.

edit: For credentials I am not any sort of material sciences engineer, but I am(as of recently) a door to door window salesman

The windshield of a car is laminated glass: two pieces of tempered glass with a plastic sheet between.

I've had a tempered glass shower shatter on me under very slight torsion when trying to get it realigned in its track. Is shatters fairly easily under certain stresses or with certain surface flaws.

I did this in a bar when I was 19. It was summer, they'd had the French window open all evening, and then they closed it some time whilst I was at the back of the place. They had no stickers on the window. I'd had three pints.

I was going to leave, and I saw my friend outside walking to the train. I ran after him. Into the window. This window did not shatter, as you say. It felt like I'd walked into concrete. At speed. I just remember a bang and then I was laying on my back with people laughing it me. It was highly embarrassing (it was a party, so these were all former school friends), so I got up and just walked out.

The first I learned of the fact I'd damaged the window was the next morning when my father stormed in my room. The bar had called - they'd got my number off someone at the party - and wanted me to come down. They were calling the police in too. Their story was I'd run at the window, smacked into it hard, cracking it and knocking the steel frame of the window out of the wall. The window had shattered but not everywhere like this. For some reason they thought I'd done it deliberately. Even my Dad didn't believe me at first. He thought I was showing off some martial arts.

We went down the bar. The window was wrecked. The police came. I explained my story. The police recommended I sort out payment with the bar. The bar claimed on insurance but wanted us to pay the excess - several thousand pounds.

At this point my Dad was awesome. He wrote the most amazing email refuting all their comments, and in particular focussed on the fact they had no sticker on the window, which meant they had some liability. In the end they dropped it.

TL:DR; I walked into one of these in a bar and knocked it out of its frame. It didn't completely shatter though.

[–]flyingnomad 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, it was over ten years ago, so I can't remember exactly. What I did remember (and what stuck out ever since) was that he would basically divide their emails up into points and very briefly answer each one really logically. He'd point out their inconsistencies. He wrote as if there was a chance one day it would end up in court.

I used this technique a few years later when I had a proper with a landlord not returning our deposit. He was terrible at returning emails. Every time we spoke I'd email a very structured, point by point email outlining the discussion and the next points I wanted to raise. It eventually went to court and it looked like I had constructively tried to solve the issue whilst the landlord (ironically a solicitor) was poor at responding and didn't actually address our issues. We won because we were logical and constructive.

Again and again I've learned that if something goes wrong, the sooner you can get the "facts" down, in writing, in email or letter, to the other side, the better. It doesn't need to appear like you are going to sue, but if it does ever end up in court they will want to read documentation, and you'll have got your story down from the beginning, in writing.

I've done this. Our office used to be several floors up in a building with a side stairway and exit, but the exit at the bottom of the stairs was offset to the side, and right at the bottom of the stairs was a floor to ceiling plate glass window that was kept immaculately clean. So there I am running down the stairs whappada-whappada-whappada-whappada- WHAM! I didn't go through, but the whole window spider-webbed from top to bottom and I stumbled back both stunned and happy not to be dead.

The moment stands to this day as an office milestone.

At first, I thought the second time it started there came someone to help. Only to watch him fall through the window too, I was like. WTF? How does glass break twice?

I had that happen to me once in the shower when the door came off its track. I tried to rehang it and it shattered, raining tiny bits of glass all over me. I didn't get cut very much.

[–]yesukai 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank modern engineering for tempered glass, eh?

[–]KimonoThief 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The exact same thing happened to me. Needed stitches for a small cut on the back of my hand, but that was about it.

[–]Confucius_says 0 points1 point ago

dude id probably do the same thing, im not sure if i'd walk so hard that i'd shatter the glass though.

Seriously why is there a door outside another door like that?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally do that all the time to automatic doors. I don't break the glass, but I knock them off the hinges, sometimes.
I don't walk too fast...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I watched that entirely too many times.

The best part is after he breaks it, he slips on the glass and eats the ground.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's the point of having two doors?

[–]I_like_ice_cream 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Environment control. No part of the lobby is directly exposed to the exterior, so the only energy loss is in the little entry foyer.

Same purpose revolving doors serve

i worked in a store that had a window just like that one but 1/3 of the size...it was clearly not a door. It was barely the size of a person yet once a week someone would smack right into it. I even tried hanging shit on it Didnt help. Some people are just in too much of a rush to pay attention.

something similar happened at my bank. the guy who walked through the glass window was a medical student. he sat there half dazed and calmly instructed the panicked bank tellers to put pressure on his wounds. pretty badass kid

I did this once when I wanted to go outside and wasn't wearing glasses at the time...back in the day before I had contacts. I went through like a 15 foot high door and got cut up all over and got taken to the hospital in an ambulance and still have scars over some parts of my body :(

Windex + doors = deadly...

I apologize if I offended anyone. I'm sorry I didn't bother to read the entire thread before posting. I'm just tired of seeing constant repeated posts being jacked and copied to other subreddits within 24 hours. It's like reddit has nothing to talk about but itself. Once again - I apologize if I offended anyone.
