You know, even going to the store, KNOWING I have plenty of money in my account, and having the machine take to long to react, I still have that feeling.

[–]Wonder-Girl 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here.

I grew up pretty poor where my mom would put things in the cart at the grocery store, thinking she had enough money to pay for it, and at the last minute her card would be declined or whatever. So we'd have to put things back to make it under her limit and it was the most embarassing thing ever. Now, as a young adult, I try to be extremely vigilant about how much money I have in my account and I don't make purchases I KNOW I can't afford but I STILL have that nervous feeling when the stupid machine takes too long, or I swipe too fast so it doesn't read it correctly!

Call your bank and tell them to not allow you to overdraft. Something about the new law Obama put in, but I recently make a bank account and they were required to ask me if I wanted to overdraft, I declined and then they made me sign a piece of paper saying I know I declined overdrafting and blah blah.

[–]copperpony 50 points51 points ago

There's a catch to this...

Sometimes a business wouldn't charge your card within two or three business days, what happens then is that money which does not belong to you shows up in your account as part as your available balance. At this point, if you are not managing your money and have no idea what you had in there, you are able to spend this cash which does not belong to you. You're thinking your cash flow is never ending! Then this particular business claims this X amount of cash which is no longer in your account. BOOM! Overdraft fees...

True story...

I had an overdraft fee of 300 dollars at some point, I literally cried myself to sleep when they only reimbursed me 40 dollars....

Edit: I had overdraft protection, by the way... This was with Chase

[–]blues_clues 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't worry, I've done this before. I called my bank and yelled at them even though it's not really their fault, but I was ultra pissed. It really seemed like the way I was charged was done intentionally to overdraft me.

I hate banks. Sometimes I wish I could just keep all my money in a sack under my mattress.

[–]Ryuujinx 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find that they overdraft you in the worst way possible.

For instance, my rent check overdrafted me this month (roommates not giving me their share, etc)

Expecting a single overdraft fee of 35? Nope.

Instead they cleared that first, then everything I had bought in the last week decided to clea and I ended up paying close to 200$ in overdraft fees. It may or may not be their fault, but it sucks either way. :|

[–]thinkythought 49 points50 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The banks do this intentionally, BofA is getting sued for it right now class action. They order the charges by amount to get the most fees possible.

[–]Alanna 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The part that gets me is that they have the gall to tell you that that they do it this way because that's how their customers want it-- they want big payments like rent or mortgage or car payments to clear over smaller purchases at stores or wherever. And that would be true, if they actually refused any of the charges-- but they don't! If they're going to take the money out either way, that whole line is just complete bullshit.

Go credit union. We did, and have never looked back.

[–]xbbdc 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I closed my BoA account today. They said it's going to take up to 2 weeks to fully close, meaning if any automatic payments are made within the next 2 weeks, the account will automatically reopen, pay the charge and then overdraft me $35. I asked Chase today if they do that, they said it takes 1 day to fully close.

[–]Ryuujinx 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always had a suspicion that they do, but no real proof other then "it feels like you wanted to charge me for 7 fees instead of 1..."

You mean they withdrew the largest charges first, instead of doing it in chronological order? The financial reform bill "Dodd Frank" the FDIC's new guidelines (see edit) makes that illegal. Look up the relevant law, call their customer service and complain. Ask to speak to their supervisor. Quote the applicable law, and if necessary threaten to sue (but not right off the bat) and I bet you anything that they refund your money.

EDIT: After a little more looking to jog my memory I don't think it's actually in Dodd Frank, but the FDIC (possibly spurred on by Dodd Frank/the CFPB). The document you want to refer to is FIL-81-2010. The provision you're looking for is clear as day: Banks must "not process transactions in a manner designed to maximize the cost to consumers." So called "priority posting" (charging the largest transaction first) is a direct violation of that.

I think there was a part of Dodd Frank, or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, that addressed this as well. But I've been unable to find the relevant law. If anyone else can find the exact provision that'd be cool.

[–]blues_clues 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah it's bullshit. I was furious when I looked at my bank and saw all the those overdrafts.

My case was I spent money here and there on the weekend. Nothing big, just coffees, food, whatever, nothing that took me to $0. Then on Monday I had to take my dog to the vet for a slight emergency and that was a big chunk. I knew this would overdraft me, but it was an emergency and I took the blow.

So of course, how does the bank charge me? They do the vet bill first, then all the little charges I had throughout the weekend.

I was fucking irate.

[–]Punster_McPunstein 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is a fucking cuntish thing to do. Did you get your money back?

[–]blues_clues 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, they said it wasn't their fault that the charges went through that way, and that I need to take it up with the businesses for waiting to "charge" me until Monday. They pretty much told me that it doesn't necessarily matter if I have money in my account or not when I make the actual purchase, it only matters when the business actually charges the card.

It was a load of crap, I no longer have my bank account with them.

[–]BDaught 2 points3 points ago*

I switched to an online bank. I get direct deposit to it and it'll overdraft to $10 which it doesn't charge you for. Also it'll send me a text after every use. I think I still owe a brick and mortar like $200 for an overdraft.

[–]boneklinkz 1 point2 points ago

In my experience it seems not that the business doesn't batch it soon enough, they can not fully charge it. When a merchant batches their transaction to whoever processes them usually about a 4 day hold is put on your card (that's why you can usually go online and see the transactions). Now for whatever reason if these do not clear and get past the hold time they may no longer show. Now it's not that you have more money in the account but the authorization numbers that the merchant obtained while swiping are still valid. They still will get paid. Now with the low, even if you overdrafted every single transaction, you should receive no fee because the funds were available.

I posted somewhere lower that, in some bad times, I've scammed my bank. I'll admit it. If I had 10 bucks in my account and need a full take of gas, I just get an entire tank. The transaction usually authorizes for a dollar until it fully clear. At that point my account is negative but I've never accrued OD fees because of that.

[–]daskoons_wif 1 point2 points ago

This happened to me just recently. Unfortunately, I paid my car bill with money that wasn't reall there and now my account is -$400. Oh well. It is to remain that way until Friday :(

[–]GhostedAccount 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any delay in posting won't effect a decline. If the charge goes through initially, the bank locks those funds. Maybe the bank isn't showing your changes to make it hard for the consumer. But as soon as the account runs out of money, it declines no matter what. Unless you opt-ed in. The business will lose their money and have to bill you.

I had overdraft protection, by the way... This was with Chase

That is your problem. You opted into overdraft protection. Overdraft protection is where they charge you a 40 dollar fee every time you overdraft. You need to call your bank and opt out of that nonsense. Once you opt out, when your account doesn't have enough money, the transaction will just be declined. You will not be charged any fees.

better yet Wells Fargo told me that some sorts of payments are considered "high priority" and will overdraft your account regardless of if you have overdraft protection or not!

[–]omgimonfire 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They passed a law (last year I think?) that forces banks to give you the choice of whether or not you want "overdraft protection coverage" -- where they cover your 99 cent purchase and charge you $36 for the convenience, or if you want them to have your card declined at point of sale. Call your bank, tell them you want to get rid of overdraft protection coverage, and they have no choice but to comply.

I upvoted the shit out of this post and actually LOL'd because of how well I remember the feeling, but I've had my card declined and ya know what? It's awesome in comparison.

EDIT: I apparently meant overdraft coverage, not protection. Thanks to the guy who may or may not be a porn star.

[–]MaybeAPornStar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're referring to overdraft coverage, not protection. Protection would be the savings account linked to your checking. Coverage is whether or not you authorize the bank to pay your account into overdraft.

But I agree. You should opt-out if you're cutting it close. Best decision I've ever made... saves a lot on overdraft fees.

[–]Schneeballschlacht 9 points10 points ago

My ex was fined over $3000 in overdraft fees in one year. Most notable? Lunch at Wendy's. The jr baconator or whatever on the $1 menu ended up costing $36.

Yup.

[–]stufff 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your ex sounds like she was extremely financially irresponsible. She would have had to make nearly 100 payments without enough money to cover them in a year.

I've over-drafted exactly once in my life, and it was because Bank of America re-opened a closed account because an automatic payment went through, and apparently they don't understand what the point of closing a fucking account is.

[–]RounderKatt 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Banks were also notrious for waiting seevral hours to process transactions, and processing the largest first (even if it was out of chronological order.) so that you would have multiple smaller overdrafts instead of one big one. And of course that's $35 for every over draft.

So say you have $14 in your account.

You make 4 purchases: $2 for parking, $5 for ice cream, $6 for a beer, and $20 for lunch - in that order.

Logic say says that you should only have $1 in your account when you buy lunch, leaving you with a $35 "convenience fee" plus your $20 lunch.

Total lunch cost: $55 - kinda ouch.

Here's what really happens: The bank processes lunch first -$20, then Beer -$6. This leaves you at -4, so they loan you the $4 and asses a $35 fee. Then they hit you for ice cream and parking $7 and two more $35 fees.

Lunch total: $105 in fees, $11 in loan = $116 for lunch. FFFFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!

tl;dr: fuck the banks, I hope they choke on this new regulation.

[–]dzunravel 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's really a matter of perceived "punishment" for wrongdoing. If you get clocked for going 10 over the speed limit in your car, and the government charges you a $50 fine, you'd deal with it. If they figured out some way to nail you for $5000 for the identical transgression, you'd be pissed. An outsider would be perfectly right in saying that if you hadn't been speeding this wouldn't be a problem... but they'd also be a jerk and they would be missing the point of the conversation. Getting charged $35 for a $2 "loan" is BS, I don't care what contract you signed or where you're from. It doesn't cost a bank $35 to subtract $2 from a number in an account where zero is apparently just a number in the middle of sequential balances.

[–]MaybeAPornStar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For what it's worth, the largest ones are usually processed first because it's assumed they're most important. For example, $500 rent payment > $5 ice cream.

Plus the new regulations allow you to opt-out and have your card declined at the point of sale.

[–]Just_A_Dinosaur 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would be true if they actually declined your card when you went to buy the $5 ice cream. If they are just going to deduct it and take a fee, then it is purely a money grab.

People sued Bank of America for this issue and they settled for $410 million.

[–]Schneeballschlacht 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, you're certainly right about the financially irresponsible. I was very sick, granted use of my credit card so she could visit family and ended up $4k in debt. I'm still trying to repair my credit. I had a perfect credit score before.

At least I learned. Never again.

edit: I've never overdrafted and never charged something I couldn't pay for in cash.

[–]kmeisthax 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's fairly easy for banks to rack up multiple overdrafts in a single day. When processing the day's accounts bank systems will often sort transactions by the following psuedocode:

def comes_before(self, other):
    """Overdraft-friendly sorting criteria"""
    if self.is_deposit and not other.is_deposit:
        return false
    elif not self.is_deposit and other.is_deposit:
        return true
    else:
        return not (self.amount < other.amount)

Basically, group all the deposits and withdrawals into separate piles, then sort them by the size of the transaction with bigger transactions first. Then put the withdrawls before the deposit. This will generate the highest possible amount of overdrafts for any set of transactions by getting you into the red as quickly as possible before counting any deposits.

The $350 should still be accounted for in your register, therefore, you should have known how much money you have to spend.

I don't understand how people do this. It is simple adding and subtracting. By the way, you can now OPT-OUT of overdraft so that your transactions would be declined (debit card usage).

My apartment complex only takes checks. They are the only reason I ever have to have checks. Luckily my credit union will print me out 12 checks any time I stop by FO FREEE. But sometimes I will just do a cashier's check so the money comes out instantly.

I thought they had to get your permission to give you overdraft fees. Bank of America sent us a letter saying that if we wanted to opt in to their "consumer protection" program they would be happy to cover the cost should we go into the negative (for a $35 overdraft fee). Yeah, no thanks assholes.

I had like $16.00 in my account and then my Xboxlive automatic renewal which I didn't even ask for came up and took their money out -$7.00, which I was saving for my World of Warcraft payment ($15.00) they came and took the rest of that out, so now I was in the negative, but because the payments processed at different times I got charged two over draft fee's of $35 each. I wasn't working at the time so it was a while before I could repay the money I owed the bank, then the bank put a $35 over draft fee on my over draft fee and it made it all worse. After 60 days they were threatening to cancel my account, so I called htem and told them I had been banking with them for more than 5 years, and I didn't want to lose my account and I wasn't working but have been looking for a job and couldn't pay the over draft fee's. They connected me to a lady who took 2 of the overdrafts off, then told me to call back tomorrow and they'd take the other overdrafts off and I would have 30 days to pay the negative balance of like 6 bucks.

TL;DR Asking the bank to remove over draft fees works sometimes. No harm in trying.

I swear, why is it even legal to cash a six month old check?

[–]jzsean 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is, but it is illegal to cash a 6 month and 1 day old check. If the date is 6 months past what is on the check, it is known as a stale-date check.

http://www.fdic.gov/regulations/laws/rules/6500-3225.html look at 2c.

[–]kmeisthax 1 point2 points ago

That regulation seriously needs to be moved up; I don't even get why a company would wait six months on a check in the first place. Wouldn't you want that money somewhere in your coffers as soon as possible?

Credit cards for the win.

[–]jzsean 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bank teller here. Due to Regulation E that went into effect around this time last year, you now have this option. When you apply for a debit card, under federal regulation, you must be asked if you want to "opt in or out." Opting in says you will accept the overdraft fee if the bank covers your non-sufficient funds(NSF). If you opt out you will not be charged the fee but your card will be declined. If you've had your check card longer than the regulation your bank should have mailed you a form to opt out. You can can change this option once per day.

edit: also, keep a check book. It is for your and the bank's protection and is a great tool for many reasons. #1 is never incurring overdraft fees and hurting your credit and relationship with the bank, and #2 is its a great tool when disputing illicit charges.

Tax payers, lobbyists, or whatnot pay for everything the have or do, It's sick. And then they have the nerve to tell us that we need to pay more, while in the meantime they'll vote a pay raise for themselves. It's plunder. The only way to describe it. They take from us and give it to themselves and their friends, then throw a few bucks to the poor to try to appear noble. The entire thing irritates me.

I can attest that at least in 07 Honda Accords and likely most cars, there is quite a bit of fuel even after the needle goes as far down as possible. I've been in some situations where I had to drive 50+ miles when it was on E and it still kept trucking. Pressing the pedal gently helps too, and coasting more instead of constant acceleration. Hey, might save you in Death Valley.

Why would you ever use a debit card instead of a credit card if you didn't have bad credit?

Pay it off the next month in full, you never pay a fee and you usually get sweet rewards.

If your card is stolen your money isn't gone, the bank has to get the money back. If your debit card is stolen your money is gone and you have to get the bank to give it back to you.

Debit cards have NO advantages over credit cards.

I'm not constantly checking the balance of my chequing (EFTPOS) account, I know roughly how much is there at any given time, but my estimate could easily be out by $100 or more. It's pretty easy to forget that a particular payment just went through or that I paid for petrol that morning.

This is why I love using my credit card for as much as you can. Obviously, you still have to make sure you don't spend more than you can afford, but most months I'm putting about half my income towards expenses and half into savings, so I don't really have to worry about going over and not being able to pay my bills.

At the end of each month (on payday if I remember to do it) I simply check my credit card statement, set up a bill-pay for that amount, and move any extra out of chequing and into a savings (so-called "high interest") account. I do have a few monthly expenses (e.g. rent paid by cheque) that don't go on the credit card so I make sure to leave enough in chequing to cover those also. Periodically I try to move some money into higher return vehicles (GIC's, stock market, etc.) while keeping approx. six months expenses as an emergency fund (but that's another topic and I'm probably not qualified to give advice on that stuff anyway).

Credit is a very useful thing as long as you're responsible. Especially be aware of how your issuer handles grace periods; for me I don't pay interest unless I carry a balance through a billing period (IOW, as long as I pay off the card balance every month, I don't pay any interest, so I actually make a little bit as the money sits in my savings account for a few weeks extra). And I'm still a grad student making peanuts, so if I can do it most people with jobs should be able to also.

Unless you are a complete idiot who has zero self-control, use a credit card. I notice a lot of hate here for credit cards, but as long as you don't abuse them and make sure that you only put amounts on them that you can pay back they are incredibly useful financial tools. Fraud protection, purchase protection, security, and if you do it right a good credit history which can help you down the road when you need a good loan. What's not to love?
