Thanks for asking the question. I was about to ask "Why would someone with a severed head be sent to the ER? Wouldn't it be advantageous just to send them to the morgue?"

More anecdotes in the favor of the new glass:

My mom went through a glass door as a kid.

This was in the mid- to late-70s. While she didn't have it as bad as the kid you describe, she had an 18" long, 4" wide (at its widest point) shard of glass sticking out of her back. Add to that multiple areas where smaller shards, splinters, and slivers got stuck in her arms, shoulders, chest, and back. She still has scars on her back from where the only way they had to remove all the tiny bits of glass in those areas was a melon baller -like device that pulled out fat, skin, and muscle as well. They did not give her local anesthetic or put her under for this. She was awake and feeling it every moment. When the doctors gave her stitches, they stopped counting after 150.

In not nearly as painful an incident, my sister went through a glass storm door while filming a story for a school project at home. My parents either didn't care or didn't know that those storm doors weren't safety glass.

So, my sister goes arms and shoulders through the door, pulls back out, and then proceeds to walk out the door. I hear her scream, then go check on her. No glass that I could see sticking out anywhere, but a few shards had cut her bicep area in the shape of a bird's foot. She had been cut so deeply that I could see fat between flaps of her skin.

Her project group panicked. I sent one to get my dad, one to get towels out of the kitchen, and had one stay there to talk to my sister so that she wouldn't look at all the smaller cuts...or try to see the big one. Once her friend got to me with the towels, I cleaned the blood away from the wounds so I could see if there's any large pieces of glass in there to worry about. I didn't see any.

I tied one of the kitchen towels around the big wound just tightly enough to apply pressure, but not tight enough to make it a tourniquet. The other wounds, I just applied pressure to with a towel. About that time, my dad showed up and takes her to the hospital where they had to give her X-Rays before they'll giver her stitches, just to be sure there's no shards of glass. She got lucky, she had none.

Of her smaller cuts, she should have probably had stitches on one of them. She now has a thick, ropy scar that runs almost from elbow to wrist on the outside of her arm. The rest of them are also thick and ropy, but not nearly as large. The bigger wound on her arm is now a scar the size of a quarter. In that wound alone she got 25 stitches.

TL;DR: My mom ran through a glass door, had a shard of glass 18" long, 4" wide (at its widest point) stuck in her back, had to have smaller shards removed with a melon baller type thing, and had over 150 stitches on all the cuts. My sister ran through a glass (not safety glass) door more recently, didn't get nearly as cut up as my mom did, but got cut deeply.

i would expect them to go the opposite direction, and use panes that don't break at all. like the plexiglass on windshields.

[–]metallink11 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The benefit is that if the pane breaks into many tiny pieces, none of them have the mass to do any serious damage. Plus, it's just the cooling process that gives the glass this property, so there is no significant extra cost whereas a windshield has some sort of extra material in between two layers of glass.

When glass is tempered (turned into this kind of safety glass) it creates some stresses in the glass, which in turn can make it more susceptible to shattering.

My wife works at a new library, and the architect had spec'd some curved display shelves with frameless curved glass doors. Due to the combination of the curved glass, the tempering, the way they were attached to the hinges, and temperature changes, the doors would spontaneously and loudly shatter into a zillion pieces. After a few of them self destructed like that, they went and had them all removed.

Somewhat related but I found it hilarious. My grandfather bought a computer from Nobody Beats the Wiz and it constantly kept crashing on him. He didn't speak English so he sent my father to go back and forth to the store to have someone fix it. The store was about 30 minutes away.

The computer repair guy said it was finally fixed and promised my dad that there would be no problems. One hour later my grandfather calls my dad and tells him its broken again. My dad is in a blind rage at this point. He parks his car and starts power walking to the store. I've seen him this mad a few times and the result was never pretty.

The doors at the store were automatic so there was no handle and the front of the store had glass panes for walls. So my dad in his fury slams face first into the glass pane and scares the shit out of all the customers that were inside. We laughed so hard that we cried.

This one makes me laugh because he's doing the "accomplishment trot". He's exiting an office building with a little bundle of papers which means he just accomplished something, so he's doing that sped up bouncy walk. He also might be very quietly muttering "tucka-tucka tucka-tucka" during the trot like he's a little machine, because that's what you do during an accomplishment trot.

Then I realized that it was glass.

How does glass break that easily?

Also, does anyone have any more info on this? Did he survive?

I did just about the same thing when I was a kid. Tomorrow I will be 56, when I was a kid we were still in the dark ages, we did not have safety glass. I hit the glass, came to a complete stop, then fell through a wall of shattered glass. Bled like a stuck hog. That glass was like a million knives raining down on me.

That falling glass, surely it cut him up fucked up. Everytime I watch that I cringe the way all that broken glass falls on him straight down

It's why they say, unlike in movies, flying through glass can leave you with serious injury

[–]shawnaroo 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Safety glass is designed so that when it breaks it breaks into lots of little pieces. They can still have sharp edges, but they're small enough that they don't really have enough weight to really cut deep into you. And also it doesn't leave big pointy shards that you could fall onto and impale yourself on.

He seems to be fine every time he goes back and walks through it again. I didn't see any blood the second time or even the third time he walked into it, so it must not be cutting him too badly.
