    1. before i came onto the scene, another redditer found a yellowpages link for the company in the background, longmile corp., but it lacked an address, but did show a map with a pin in yellow pages 2005-style map thingy.
    2. i found that map location on google maps in satellite view, and spot checked everywhere arond where that pin was to find a south-south-west facing rollup door (luckily, the satellite angle for this google maps pic was friendly to this) i estimated south-south-west based on teh angle of the wells fargo building in the background.
    3. sadly, i was unable to find said door within a 3-blick radius
    4. i re-googled longmile corp and tho i didnt find an address, i did find a category for longmile corp not listed on the yellowpages, which was shoe sales. i remembered seeing a shoe store nearyby and checked that out...but still no luck.
    5. i three-googled "longmile" and i think "shoes" as well, and something like the 15th hit had an address.
    6. i zoomed near that address, and looked for key features within a 2-block raius, mainly a tarpaper roof with some arch to it, the same angle to the wells fargo building, a rought iron fence, and a parking lot.
    7. i saw a parking lot that looked a little off-angle, but promising, and dropped my little yellow streetview lego man. then i turned left and BAM
    8. then i got a boner.

                Why do people have to be so anal about calling cool and awesome graffiti "street art" or "art?" Yes, it's art, but it's still graffiti. And not to sound like I'm bashing graffiti, as I was a graffiti writer myself. But, just call it graffiti.

                I disagree. I feel like the intention of graffiti isn't necessarily to make something beautiful, but with street art that is explicitly the intention. You're making art. Sure sometimes with graffiti you happen to make art but I wouldn't say that's necessarily the intent behind the graffiti artist.

                I was always under the impression that graffiti is more about getting your name out there. Of gaining renown by being better at your craft than other people but you're not trying to beautify the landscape or spread a message.

                That's my take on it. I love both, I'm not bashing graffiti, I just think it's different than street art because the reason behind it is different.

                you have never met a graffiti artist have you? all the ones i know are the purist artist i know. they risk their necks making awesomely beautiful lettering. they do it because they love it and they don't get paid. maybe a little recognition isn't such a bad thing.

                Actually I know quite a few graffiti artists and I've read lots of books on it and watched documentaries etc... I was just stating my opinion on the differences between "graffiti" and "street art" and why some people feel the need to differentiate. I believe there is a difference and it has to do with intention more than technique or materials used. And of course there's a ton of overlap between the two. I don't believe, and I wasn't trying to imply that it was some black and white thing.

                Also, just to be clear I love graffiti. From simple bombs to huge murals I think it's awesome. I love that it breaks up the scenery and that there are people out there who feel so passionate about something that they'll risk life and limb to put it out there. I think if corporates are going to be allowed to put up their shitty billboards up everywhere then we should be allowed to put up our own advertisements. I know there's free walls but that's not really the same thing.

                I know a lot of kids who only want to "get up" and that's cool, do that. But the friends I have who do graffiti that is really beautiful and awesome usually do it in places where few people will see it.                     I think it's very well done graffiti. Again I believe the sort of "crossover" point between graffiti and street art is intention. What was the artists intention.

                    They're amazingly well crafted pieces of graffiti. But I don't feel that it's "art" in the classical sense because it's purpose is more to promote their crew and show off their skills. I don't really get the sense that they're trying to "say" anything with their incredible skill. Also, just to be clear I do accept that art doesn't always have to mean anything.

                    I mean really I don't care. All I was trying to say was that there's a reason some people say "graffiti" and some say "street art." They're not just being pedant assholes.

                    Like I said above I love graffiti in all forms. I wasn't trying to pass judgement just saying that I believe there's a difference.

                    I mean to be honest, who fuckin knows. It's like Rap and Hip-Hop. I guess in the end it probably only really matters what the person who is doing the piece wants to call it. If they want to call their artwork graffiti then by all means they're the ones doing it. If they wanna call it street art, whatever. To me it really doesn't matter as I like looking at both and I've yet to spend a second trying to classify it as one so I can enjoy it more.

                    The only reason I said anything was because someone above said people were being "anal" by wanting to call the piece the OP linked to street art.

                    Also, watch Exit Through The Gift Shop, a lot of those people call themselves street artists and I'm pretty sure zero of them have any sort of permission.

                            this mural by INSA, and many others, were put together by Dan Lahaoda's LA Freewalls project. He is independent, and gets legal wall space and hooks them up with the right artist.

                            I do a similar thing in Jersey City, NJ. I started getting legal wall space for artists because I wanted to contribute to my community. I've done several murals with different artists, and some small minded locals have made a stink that I am promoting graffiti.
