We interrupt this collaborative song thread to bring you the idea that if a cow can feel pleasure, it can feel pain. The same nerve endings and the same pain centers in the brain as us can't be wrong. Go vegan!

[–]logged_in_to_comment 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can understand vegetarians. But why the hell shouldn't we eat unfertilized eggs and drink animal milk? It actually hurts the cow not to be milked. In addition, vegan-ism is difficult and not everyone can do it and most people can't do it healthfully. I don't know why your comment flustered me enough to log in.

[–]Granite-M 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, if you want to really get down to the nitty gritty, a cow doesn't produce milk unless it's calved. The boy calves generally get slaughtered, and the girl calves get made into future milkers. That said, my uncle is an organic dairy farmer, and he takes his cows' well-being very seriously. Happy, healthy cows produce better milk, anyway, and the same rules apply to beef. I don't think any animal deserves to suffer unduly, but I'm quite secure in my position at the top of the food chain, and if anyone wants to tell me that I can never have Ben & Jerry's, sharp cheddar cheese, or a hamburger that's been marinated in Guiness beer and liberally seasoned with garlic and just a little Worcestershire sauce because it's somehow fundamentally immoral to kill cows (which, by the way, are so stupid that, left to their own devices, they will stumble into holes and die), then that person is quite welcome to go ahead and see what happens if they voluntarily cede their position to the wolves, coyotes, and bears. And don't even get me started on chickens. True, factory farming is bad for everyone, chicken and human alike, but chickens are some of the dumbest, least pleasant fucking creatures I have ever has the misfortune of interacting with. A cow can at least have some vestiges of mammalian fraternity with humanity. A chicken is about as friendly as an iguana, and just as trustworthy. Scale a chicken up to the size of a human being, and you know what you have? A velociraptor that would just as soon peck your face off as look at you. Killing and eating chickens is doing the whole world a favor.

And furthermore...

Ooh!

Some of the work gets you pretty clean

This is just the place to be if you planned on bein' a Holstein!

I'm going to play devil's advocate here somewhat but this:

cows (which, by the way, are so stupid that, left to their own devices, they will stumble into holes and die. Since when is stupidity our criteria to eat something? We support plenty of handicapped human beings who left to their own devices would suffer the same fate.

Also, pigs have widely been proven to be as smart as, if not smarter, than dogs... Just something to think about.

[–]Contradiction11 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know cows usually have a calf to get the milk out right? Do you know what dairy farmers do with calves?

[–]Gourmay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having been a vegetarian for just over a year (former hardcore meat lover), I came to the sad conclusion a few days ago that there's actually not much point in being vegetarian if you're consuming say dairy products, and no, not even because so many cheeses contain rennets (fourth stomach chamber from calves) but because the calves are killed so we can enjoy dairy products in the first place. If one is vegetarian in protest of the disgraceful conditions in which factory-farmed animals are treated then by consuming dairy products (calves slaughtered, milk producing cows disposed of as soon as they start lowering their output) one is still strongly supporting that industry.

Either way the fundamental problem is consumption and the sheer amounts of meat, dairy etc. that we consume, the fact that we consume them is a different debate. Lowering the amounts we consume would generate incredible amounts of change; doing meatless Mondays has a bigger impact on the environment than a whole week of eating local food with a low carbon footprint (the study is somewhere on reddit).

Now that's the way they should be treated. Saw a show where the cows go into a fully automatic milking machine when they feel they need to be milked. I bet they give more milk when they are content. Nice to see.

[–]bottmanakers 29 points30 points ago

Yeah the DeLaval Voluntary Milking System (VMS) is awesome. I work for the company the builds that and the automated cow brush in the picture. I can tell you first hand they love that bush. We have a dairy here that had a component fail so the unit was down for a few days. When our service guy put the new part in and fired it up the cows came running.

[–]miquette 21 points22 points ago

In California especially, farmers recognize the benefits of keeping the cows comfortable and happy. Makes it much easier to get a cow pregnant (essential for milk cows) and also helps them avoid infection. I went to one of those 3-5 thousand cow farms in Cali and they had comfy sand beds, automated sprinkler systems, and the cows rarely needed to walk on concrete.

[–]candygram4mongo 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is about the fifth message like this I've seen here. I feel like we're being infiltrated by the California dairy marketing board.

[–]desaparecid0 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just feel like there is unlimited negative press for farms, especially 1,000+ cow farms. After seeing more than a dozen large farms (500-5000 cows) in 5 countries, while working on a documentary, I was legitimately impressed with the quality of care I saw in California and it seems that it's only getting better. They all still smell terrible though.

What documentary?

[–]desaparecid0 0 points1 point ago

[–]Gourmay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So all the horrible stuff we see leaked on a daily basis or the laws that Iowa is trying to pass to make it a crime to film undercover are in your opinion not representative of factory farming?

Not being snarky just genuinely curious.

[–]desaparecid0 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was never on a farm with more than 5,000 cows though, and a handful of farms is not a very accurate sample size, although i did see a variety. It seems that everyone is trying to keep up with the European industry, which has much more strict regulations, which means milk quality and cow comfort are going to keep going up, but so will prices.

It's worth mentioning that every single farmer I met genuinely cared about, or even loved their cows and had been in this industry because it was passed down to them and they had done it all their life, not because it's lucrative (it's not).

There are too many factors to make any broad statements about the industry. There are environmental impacts, animal rights, antibiotic and growth hormone arguments, milk quality issues (mastitis), some farmers buy drugs illegally instead of from licensed vets, and some farmers train their workers to administer drugs and perform surgery instead of hiring a vet. The use of illegal immigrants is also pretty much ubiquitous.

tl;dr there are really nice farms and there are really shitty farms.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is not the farmer. The problem is the step after the farmer. The numbers say we risk this much product by cramming this many cows into this much space and pumping them full of this much crap. The liability is worth the added profit, so it's done. Probably not as bad as all that, but you get the idea.

The real reason there's bad press for farms is because the second step has all the money.

[–]srs_house 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering that the 'other side' has a pretty heavy following on here, is that such a bad thing?

[–]windy444 4 points5 points ago

As it should be. I'm not an animal activist but I do believe these animals deserve proper treatment.

[–]belsambar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am curious, do you only drink milk from places where you know the animals are treated well?

[–]windy444 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no idea where the milk I drink comes from. I was just glad to see how these cows were treated. That's all.

[–]belsambar 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay, thanks for replying. It is a great sentiment to believe that animals deserve proper treatment. The problem is that so few people realize that they're contributing to the mistreatment of animals when they buy things at the supermarket. Virtually all animal products in this country come from factory farms, where animals are tortured all day long. If you really believe that animals deserve proper treatment, please try to buy products that are somehow certified as being from cruelty-free farms.

[–]windy444 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe but, don't know for sure, that most of our beef, chicken and pork is local to our province. We don't as a rule eat a lot of this as my wife and I watch our diets and try to avoid fatty red meats. Thank you for mentioning certification of cruelty-free farms. Next shopping trip I will look for this certification, although I have never seen it in the past.

[–]belsambar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, you sound like you are from somewhere other than the US (we don't have provinces). I have learned a lot about the meat and dairy industry in the US, but don't know very much at all about the situation in other countries. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. Best.

How do they clean the sand beds?

[–]desaparecid0 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they change the sand out, they also have an auger type thing they attach to a tractor and drive along the beds. the auger basically "fluffs" the sand to make it more comfortable. This was one farm though, there are still plenty of places where the cows just have a rubber mat over cement.

I think the next step is going to be using some artificial substance instead of sand, that is also anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

[–]Dynoman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They probably don't, just scoop out the old and replace with new. Old sand is probably used as fertilizer on crop fields, at least that is how it was done on the farm I visited.

Now that robotic milking systems are becoming popular, farmers are noticing that the cows quickly become bored and quit mooing without as much human contact. This translates into falling production. There are many ways to keep cows stimulated, such as changing flavors of the feed on a regular basis (corn syrups are popular like grape or cherry...seriously). Brushes and misters are also good options.

Not washer. It's a scratcher.

It is also not very robotic, but I'll let that slide.

[–]PfionaBW 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true. Cows love a good back scratch and without a scratcher, they'll scratch against fences or whatever they can find, usually destroying whatever it is they chose to rub against. The farmers I know, get the old street cleaning brushes off of the street cleaning trucks and stand them up on a post in the pasture for the cows to scratch on.

Happy cows = good milk.

[–]runarmar 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More like: Happy cows = a lot of milk

[–]desaparecid0 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unhappy cows can pump out the record amounts of milk thanks to drugs and dietary additives. Happy cows get sick less and their udders get infected less. Amount of infection determines milk quality. Happy cows = less pus in your milk.

[–]srs_house 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cows that aren't happy are usually more stressed, which makes them more prone to illness - just like people. Drugs (ie man-made hormones identical to those naturally produced by cows) can help a cow produce an extra 10%-20% milk, and dietary additives help ensure a cow gets a balanced diet that keeps their rumen healthy.

[–]runarmar 1 point2 points ago

Please don't link to the Daily Mail if you can, they are our Brit equivalent to Fox News and post a tremendous amount of homophobic/racist/deceitful stories.

You can often find these stories somewhere else if you want to link or just link to a screenshot ;)

This is a DeLaval rotating cow brush. They're very expensive, but apparently worth it in milk production gains. Happy cows = more milk!

And by expensive, I mean $3000 - $4000 Canadian.

Just a public service announcement:

About 17-18% of US ground beef comes from dairy cows.

and

In a study in the USA in 2008, eight different brands of fast food hamburgers were evaluated for water content by weight and recognizable tissue types using morphological techniques that are commonly used in the evaluation of tissue's histological condition. The study found that the content of the hamburgers included:

Water content 37.7% to 62.4% (mean, 49%)

Meat content 2.1% to 14.8% (median, 12.1%)

Skeletal tissue

Connective tissue

Blood vessels

Peripheral nerve tissue

Plant material

Adipose tissue

Bone and Cartilage ("Bone and cartilage, observed in some brands, were not expected; their presence may be related to the use of mechanical separation in the processing of the meat from the animal. Small amounts of bone and cartilage may have been detached during the separation process")[5]

Recent meat processing methods employed companies such as Beef Products Inc., have led to the inclusion of "pink slime" (a trimmings meat product that has been separated using a centrifuge and treated with ammonia) in up to 70% of ground beef products in the USA. This products has been included in US meat products since 2001[6]

I would be pissed if my hamburger had no water in it. Dry hamburgers are not fun to eat.

[–]belsambar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd be pissed if my hamburger had 2% meat in it. Or any amount of ammonia.

The MOST meat in a fast food hamburger is 14.8%. That's crazy.

[–]Psychomedic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well yeah when you're buying hamburger meat at 2 cents per gram it's going to be mostly filler and the 'non-meat' meat. I would have guessed 20-30% but I would have included blood vessels and some other non-muscle material as meat.

I didn't know about the ammonia treatment though, which is apparently so they can use shittier meat and avoid e-coli contamination. The 70% figure doesn't come from the sourced article so that needs to be fixed.

ISN'T THAT BETTER THAN JUST THROWING ALL THAT OTHER SHIT AWAY? IF YOU CAN PACKAGE IT INTO A PALATABLE FORM, WHY NOT?

[–]belsambar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it seems deceitful to package all that gross shit and call it "hamburger." But I'm not the one eating it, so go right ahead.

[–]zjneih2 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a realist who enjoys eating meat. If it's cheap, it's not going to harm people, tastes fine, and is easily accessible to the masses, I don't see the issue.

[–]belsambar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because countless animals suffer constantly. That is the issue. You might not care about it, but that is the issue. Well, that, and the fact that the meat and dairy industries are just about the worst polluters in the world.

Unless you're talking specifically about the "meat" additives stuff, in which case I'd say the issue is the very liberal type of labeling that occurs. If I thought I was consuming "meat" and learned that it was actually 2% meat, 50% water, and the rest a mixture of connective tissue, ammonia and fat, I'd be upset. Call me crazy.

[–]FearlessBuffalo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck everything about the meatindustry. Last month I found out that gluing meat together is something that happens... Very often.

But seriously though. The meat and dairy industry pisses me off more than anything. Some mechanical brush isn't making up for all the suffering.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only in the UK where matured beef is more rare and much more expensive. Its a country that primarily eats veal if they are eating cow. That is something they forgot to mention or you may have missed. Its only cost viable to use the meat glue in Britain. The way that fake eggs pretty much only exist in China. Its actually cheaper to buy good cuts of meat in the US than to acquire various spare cuts and glue them together.

[–]FearlessBuffalo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure it's common practice in a lot of EU countries. I read somewhere that it's almost undetectable. You buy something that looks like a perfect steak but it's actually pieced together, you cannot see the difference in most cases. That shit scares the shit out of me. Big corporations will do anything to make a buck. That's why, when I buy my steaks (I'm mostly vegetarian but sometimes I indulge), I buy them from a farmer that I know personally and that only slaughters a couple of animals a year. I've seen enough factory farms to know that anything that comes out of that place will have received lesser quality of treatment and nutrition.

Actually a single hamburger is made up (potentially) of hundreds of cows as the choice meat is stripped and cut, then the remains are put together and blended to make hamburger.

I have to say... this brush seems like a great thing. It keeps the animals clean and happy (or, at least, happier than they would be otherwise at a dairy farm). It helps the farm owners by supposedly increasing milk production, and helps the animals a bit. If the dairy industry needs to exist, things like this brush should exist, as well.
