Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

My biggest criticism of shit like this isn't that it is in the wrong subreddit, it's that it isn't funny or interesting or informative.

Rubbish. According to the usual source: About 79.2%[110] of Norwegians were members of the Church of Norway as of January 1, 2010. However, only 20% of Norwegians say that religion occupies an important place in their life (according to a recent Gallup poll), the fourth-lowest such percentage in the world (ahead of only Estonia, Sweden and Denmark).

That's a long way from saying that Norway is 80% atheist.

You forgot to copypaste a few lines further down on the same page:

According to the Eurobarometer Poll 2005, at that time 32% of Norwegian citizens responded that "they believe there is a god". A study conducted three years previously by Gustafsson and Pettersson (2002), similarly found that 72% of Norwegians did not believe in a 'personal God.'

I'm not defending either figure. In reality the majority of Norwegians are mild Christians. The religion is a big part of our culture, and people like to get married in Church, attend Christmas mass etc. However on a day-to-day basis most people do not visit Church on Sundays. Very many have this "I guess I sort of believe" approach, but aren't that active in their religion.

Most people will be a part of the church because getting baptized as a baby is very common. To then become an atheist on paper requires actively leaving the Church, which not that many people care to do. This is simply because being a member doesn't have any apparent negative consequences.

I live in Norway, about 1 hour from the capital. And less than 3% of the people I know are christian or otherwise religious. In fact if you are openly christian where I come from, you run a serious risk of being ridiculed for your faith. So saying Norway is a godforsaken country, atleast some parts of it, isn't so far from the truth.

A little while ago, DAWN (a christian organization) did a survey of how many considered themselves "active christians". They got a result at around 5% (+/- 0.5% depending on the location). Source

While it is true that secularization does not cause social problems, almost all of the advantages named in this comic strip have resulted directly from the discovery of oil, not the spread of atheism.

I'd also like to note that while I've seen several Reddit posts stating an admiration of Norway's health system, I can report to you that it sucks. Socialized medicine has been successful in some countries, but private healthcare is the way to go in Norway regardless of the expense.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I disagree. I have gotten free health services in Norway (according to posts regarding American healthcare) that would ruin any Americans without insurance. On what do you base your dislike for Norway's healthcare?

But of course, if you use private healthcare you don't have to stand in line like most others.

A relative lives in Norway. She was injured during childbirth, but the hospital and nurses told her that she was being weak and that she should bear it.

Her daughter is currently suffering from seizures. The doctor has prescribed medication, but won't tell the mother what he thinks is causing them. The daughter can't see another doctor without going to private care because he is the doctor who is assigned to her.

Im sorry to hear that.

If she was injured due to hospital error, she is entitled to compensation from the hospital/government through Pasientklagenemda (patients complaint organ).

It is also very sad about the childs seizures. If the doctor does not know what is causing the seizures, it is common practice at least in norway to give medication to stop the symptoms in lack of a cure for the cause. An example would be the 5 year old daughter of a friend to mine. She has multiple diagnoses based on the illness, but since the doctors does not know exactly what is wrong, they are giving her medication for epilepsy to reduce her seizures.

In your example, should the doctor have a diagnosis but refuse to inform the patients parents about it, they can complain directly to the kommunelege and fylkeslege - the doctors responsible for every doctor in what would compare to an american county. They have authority to override the decitions to the primary doctor.

Also, every Norwegian citizen have the right to choose primary doctor through Fastlegeordningen. They can choose any doctor in the county as long as there is spare capacity.

In sorry for the late reply, but Im out of town, visiting my grandparents.

About 9 hours ago my grandfather felt ill due to his angina and heaped up water in his lungs. Half an hour later (after conferring with the equivillent to 911) an ambulance crew came and did some tests before bringing him up to the hospital for observation. This is probably the 10th time this year (he's in first name terms with some of the paramedics) and it havent cost him more than the maximum of around 400 dollars per year in personal fees.

Incidently I was left in charge of my grandmother who suffers from stroke. About an hour ago she fell of the toilet with a bang that woke me up. Since shes a rather large woman I had no chance of helping she on my own, so I rang the house alarm and the nurses and nighthelps came to help us. They are living in a government subsided elderly community. They only pay normal rent.

If this seems a but strange that all that should happen on the same evening, I agree. Im freaked out and cant sleep. So i decided to reddit a bit from my cell, fees be damned. Its been a rough day.

But to sum it up: Your relative have more rights than she realizes, Norway have a bang on healthcare system, and I gladly pay my taxes to support my grandparents, myself and everyone else in need of medical support.

Thanks for your reply. I will forward this information to her. Her family is relatively new to Norway and she is probably unaware of her options. I'm sorry to hear that your grandparents are unwell. I hope they will recover soon. Thanks again for taking the time to provide such a detailed response.

You see it's funny because as an atheist I've never met a pastor and this is what I think they are like.

I don't understand(?) the over 70% atheist figure isn't true at all.

Being a member of a religious society and being religious are two different things. I am Jewish, but I don't believe in god at all.

See a few posts above for details specific to Norway.
