So does the cat think its about to be picked up by its mother? Or does it think a predator has it by the neck?

[–]refer_2_me 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Both. I worked in a vet clinic for a few years, and we didn't use a clip, but we would hold that cats by the skin on the back of the neck and they immediately go limp.

[–]refer_2_me 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically as long as you hold them. It doesn't always work, though, if the cat is unbelievably pissed, no much is going to get them to lay still.

[–]TWI2T3D 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would it be acceptable to use these clips on my adult cats in order to cut their nails?

Also, is it actually essential to cut a cat's nails? Mine hate having it done, to the point where I try to avoid it because I hate the fact that they dislike it so much. They are growing rather long at the moment but if it's okay to leave them, I'd rather that.

[–]refer_2_me 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but take care, you should see an immediate and obvious effect (maybe not quite as drastic as in the gif, but something like that). If it looks like it is hurting the cat stop immediately of course.

[–]TWI2T3D 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry to push you for an answer, but is it necessary to cut them? The back claws on my one cat are now showing quite prominently even when she is relaxed.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to cutting them (apart from saving the furniture)?

[–]drummererb 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do some research as I've not owned a cat that was claws (I tend to rescue cats from broken families and such, all have been declawed) but there are plastic caps you can buy at the pet store. I -think- these are safe, but do some research.

My general rule of thumb is, if -you- cannot confidently cut those claws so that you don't clip that nerve, don't. Take them to the groomer or something to have it done

[–]Davine_Chi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My answer, for anyone interested:

I used to clip them, but it was too much of a hassle and she would get jumpy and I'd sometimes end up hurting her. I decided against it and she's been fine so far. She grooms herself and her claws well enough without my interference.

[–]Slabonator 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cats will naturally scratch things to shorten their nails from over-growing. So if you value your sofa you might want to clip them once a month. I usually do it when my cat starts to have a hard time walking on the carpet..

[–]TWI2T3D 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not bothered about the furniture. It can be replaced.

[–]AstaraelGateaux 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We have 2 indoor cats and don't cut their nails. Out computer chairs are all scratched though, and when they knead you it bloody hurts.

[–]TWI2T3D 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know that pain. I more or less constantly have scram marks on my arms from my four. I regularly (jokingly) get asked if I've been self-harming. It's nice to sometimes give a completely deadpan yes just to see people not know how to react to that answer ;)

My boyfriend was so excited when he found out cats do this. I had a litter of kittens at home and he picked up every single one of them by the back of their neck and got all excited about how they curled up and didn't move. It was adorable.

"don't forget to spay and neuter your pets! :p"

[–]G-Zom 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would if I could. :\ We always get semi-tame (former pet?) cats at our house and they get used to us and pretty much become our pets. My mom doesn't want to pay to get them spayed though, so we end up with kittens.

[–]scottoak 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some areas have once a month or so clinics where they will spay or neuter animals for free. If you don't want to keep sending kittens to the pound (where they might not make it out alive) you should look into it.

[–]psiphre 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

kittens rarely have trouble getting adopted. it's the older cats that typically get euthanized.

[–]G-Zom 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We've actually found homes for almost all the kittens we end up with. I don't know of any vets in my area who do that, but I will look into it when I get home.

The scruff of a cat's neck has more or less no sensation whatsoever. It's the built-in handle with which mother cats will pick up and carry about their kittens.

[–]matt_bison 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When my cat goes wild and starts scratching the couch/chair out of the blue, I go up to him and lightly grab the back of the neck. I don't put any pressure on it at all and he falls down because he knows he fucked up.. It's the funniest thing.

[–]sugarbooger89 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called the scruff reflex I think. Kittens have it for when their mother grabs them by the neck. It's a good instinct for when the mother wants to move them or just have them behave. Some cats hold on to it into adulthood and some don't. KNOWLEDGE IS HALF THE BATTLE.

How do I apply this to my own three-legged (born with it) Abyssinian cat? Lately she's been trying all day to get the kitchen door open and go outside while she goddamn knows that she hates the outside world. All she does is eating some grass, vomiting it out inside, fight with the rabbits and go apeshit when an other cat visits our backyard.

Where do I hold her exactly?

[–]1stGenRex 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

a few inches from the base of the neck. Just feel for the stretchy skin

[–]Quatroking 0 points1 point ago

I tried it a few times now and everytime she stands still for a few seconds and then rolls over in order to free herself.

[–]1stGenRex 1 point2 points ago

As a tip to anyone with a dog, don't EVER attempt to pick up a dog by it's scruff . It can cause them to get a hernia. Cat's are OK though, and I also worked in a vet hospital, and this helped in keeping cats still, and calm.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure if this is cruel or not but I think I'd prefer it over drugs to make the cat behave... if that'd work even.

[–]pyroenthused 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't worry, that cat isn't even feeling that. This is why mother cats pick up their kittens by that part of the neck.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I think it's probably fine. They say not to do that to a full-grown cat, but I think it's more if you're going to hold the cat and support it by the skin of the neck. Perhaps that's too much for an adult to hang from, but they're pretty small and cats are pretty light usually.

nope, they get no sensation from the scruff of their neck, it's like a built-in handle for momma-cats.

but don't try to pick up an adult cat by the scruff, it'll cut off their breathing

[–]drummererb 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can, but do it for a short moment, like to move the cat.

Sometimes I can catch my cat just as he's about to "hyurk hyurk" on something stainable. I grab him by the scruff, move him 2 feet to the kitchen tile and then he's good. Not even 2 seconds of holding him like that.

[–]1stGenRex 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not at all. you can pick them up by this portion of the skin, it's quite stretchy.

Little science fact for those that didn't know, many animals have a sort of hypnosis or paralysis state like this. Birds and other animals freeze up like this as a sort of defense mechanism when threatened by predators. Generally the predator might consider the frozen animal as weak or sick, thus making it much less desirable as a food source.
