Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

tl;dr

The flight departed runway 27R, and immediately after takeoff, a passenger reported seeing a "cover" come off the No. 1 engine. The captain felt the airplane "shutter," declared an emergency, and returned the airplane to the airport and landed without further incident.

[...]

A mechanic who performed a daily check on the airplane prior to the accident flight stated he opened the fan cowl for the No. 1 engine to check on what appeared to be an oil leak. The mechanic stated he found no leak and was in the process of closing the fan cowl when he was called away to another aircraft. The mechanic later returned to the incident airplane to finish the maintenance checks, and he stated he could not recall if the cowl doors on the No. 1 engine were fully latched.

I can understand how having an aircraft missing a piece in flight might freak out the passengers.

Engine cowl departures do happen time to time and generally don't pose a safety hazard to the aircraft / occupants; assuming it doesn't hit any other part of the aircraft on it's way off sufficiently hard to cause damage.

I was actually debating this very question with some coworkers a month ago. Would the path of a departed engine cowl in flight come remotely close to lets say the horizontal tail stabilizer (would change from one aircraft type to another). If so, could it do enough damage to cause a safety concern? (i.e. damage to the horizontal tail stabilizer). How would the damage of an engine cowl hitting the aircraft tail compare to lets say a large bird impact (i.e. a geese).

Bottom line, engine cowl departures are generally frowned upon because of the disruption in air traffic and because well... aircraft aren't supposed to be loosing pieces in flight. Plus it freaks out passengers, so that is never a good thing.

I'm fairly sure that all aircraft manufacturer's try to make engine cowl latching 'dummy proof' but it is a lot harder than it sounds. In a lot (if not almost all) cases of engine cowl departures, maintenance guys think the cowls are fully latched but they weren't.

Holy crap, this was submitted three days ago? I hate it when I miss that shit. I did a search for "airplane" and a few other words on r/pics and clearly missed it. 3 days ago! I can't believe it.

I don't blame you took me some time too, just when I remembered it had "now" in the title I was able to find it.

It's too bad there isn't some sort of Reddit-specific Tineye search that tells you if a photo has been uploaded before. At least with youtube videos, you can just plug in the URL and find out. Honestly, that annoys me. I was looking through here and clearly there are tons of cool pics.

Passenger #1: I have to get off this plane, okay? Her friend has a feeling something's wrong with the "left Phalange".

Passenger #2: What's wrong with the plane?

Stewardess: There's nothing wrong with the plane.

Passenger #1: Yeah! The left Phalange!

Sewardess: There is no Phalange!

Passenger #1: Oh my God. This plane doesn't even have a Phalange!

Airtran. It's obvious from the color, but it's noted in the linked report.
