Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I think part of the way it's structured like this is to add to the comic. I think it's supposed to be slightly confusing, lending to the idea that we don't always know why people act the way they do.

Billions of experiences, people, and situations interact everyday to create our individual personalities.

Egh. I understand if you don't want to explain every small detail about something to someone (especially someone random on the internet), but learning takes having everything to know about something exposed to you before you can identify it again on your own. Trying on your own without prior exposure to known patterns can easily lead people to thinking they didn't try hard enough (or just give up interest) when in reality they simply didn't have enough exposure to identify the patterns and work with or enjoy what they're doing.

Your impressions of people are not as accurate as you think and you yourself may change into something you disliked.

[–]PatAunces 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's really not that hard. It traces the lives of people that interact as they get older, or through their past, to show correlations between them. Like the dad who hates Pakis had his heart broken by a Paki when he was a kid.

It goes back and forth in time a lot and changes the focus of the narrative a whole crap ton of times, so you're not the only one man.

Something very important to notice: The "Nice Guy" at the beginning ends up being a drunk and says "What the **** are you looking --" which was going to be exactly (probably) what the "dick" at the beginning said to him. When it was said to him, he was lead to the thought of "What is the matter with some people?" He ended up learning what was wrong with some people by becoming that person himself.

Edit - accuracy

[–]enalios 5 points6 points ago

Okay, I had to type it out to understand what the hell is happening, I'll leave this here just in case it helps anyone.

The Dick is mean to Nice Guy in the first scene. The Dick eventually is a sweet old guy and has a Grand-Daughter.

The Grand-Daughter grows up and is grouchy and is divorced(?) and has a Blonde Daughter.

Blonde Daughter eventually goes to school with a redhead and a smart tan girl(?). The redhead thinks the Tan girl is gonna be more successful than her.

Tan girl grows up to work at McDonalds and sees some selfish Pakistani on a bus, but actually that dude is just nervous.

And that Pakistani dude is gay! And has a blonde lover! Blonde lover grew up with a Dad that told him never to mix with Pakistanis.

The Dad hates Pakistanis because he had a friend, who was a girl, when he was a kid who was pakistani...and one time they played and then left school(?).

Pakistani GirlFriend was walking with her Pakistani Mom and they saw a crying white boy.(?)

Crying Boy's dad is the nice guy from the first scene. Nice Guy became a drunk and got punched in the face.

So... I dunno... are all the blonde people related? WTF is the point of that redhead other than to be all "Hey don't worry sometimes smart people fuck up and work and McDonald's"? Why does the Dad hate Pakis, really - I mean, they played together in pre-K and then it shows them going home... 'cuz school is over. Is the Pakistani Mom someone I should know? Wait! There's only one pakistani family so the gay dude is the son of the little pakistani girl? Who the fuck is Jen? The redhead? No - that's like 30 years away - WTF!!!

I'm pretty sure the message in this story could have been gotten across with a not-so confusing timeline. Or at least without so much time skipping... But you know what, this guy can draw, and he did, this guy can come up with a story concept, commit to it, and get it out there for other people to see. So I respect that and hope he makes more.

[–]Elidor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too often we look for a specific message. Some art is deliberately ambiguous, like a Terrence Malick film. If we have to boil this down to some simplified message, it would probably be...no, I won't do it. My vague understanding of the strip is too nebulous and ineffable to survive an attempt at explanation. It just is.

[–]db0255 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The message would be appearance isn't always reality, and people's behaviors are complex and sometimes rooted in the past.

[–]enalios -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah but when you go out of your way to encapsulate your message in "two guys lives and actions are intertwined". It does create certain expectations. Yes, sure, art is supposed to be unexpected but not unexpected for the sake of being unexpected.

For example if he ended the strip with "And then they all turned bright green and started to drill underground with their new drill-horns! And the Pakistanis were all the same shape-shifting person."

[–]wardenblarg 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You guys are missing it, the point is that you never can tell...

[–]enalios 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course that's the point. But is it meant to be just a series of disjointed stories? And if so why is it being presented as though they are all related?

If they are all related- it would seem as though they're not really. And if THAT is the point, that's really cool. But I don't think it is, since the title and general reoccurring theme is that you can't tell how "some people" end up.

Which is fine. But again, its presented as though all these people are connected, but some people in the story don't really seem to be at all.

[–]egadsbrain 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeap. correct.

the chronology goes forward to make the statement that nobody knows how people will change and whether key events in life will alter them. It then goes back chronologically to show that there sometimes is a reason why people do the things they do.

the inclusion of so many unrelated people was there for diversity and i think to give the impression that this sort of shit happens to everyone and everyone reacts to situations differently. It tells us that we cannot assume how people will act, but at the same time, people form their opinions act based on personal experiences.

[–]Jealous_Hitler 0 points1 point ago*

I'll explain it the best I can. With pornstars.

Peter North walks down the street and is taunted by John Holmes. Now John Holmes grows up and raises his daughter Lexi Belle. Lexi grows up and raises her own daughter Brynn Tyler. Brynn Tyler is jealous of her sex buddy, Pamela Anderson, because she is better in every way.

Brynn Tyler grows up and googles Pamela Anderson and finds out her boobs have gotten flabby and she works at a fast food restaurant.

Now, Pamela Anderson is riding a bus. Since her pussy has dried up, she gets mad at every hot dude she sees, so she scorns a fellow busgoer who hesitates in giving his seat to an old lady.

Turns out that Busgoer is homosex and Pakistani, some pornstar you've never heard of. Now Mr. Homosex has a teenage partner, and for legal reasons I can't reveal his name.

When his partner was a kid, he was forbidden to talk to Pakistanis by his dad. However, his dad only forbades him because he himself was cockblocked from his own Pakistani vixen.

Pakistani girl walks down the street and sees a sad Ron Jeremy. Despite having a large cock, he has trouble with the ladies for some reason. His dad, Peter North, is a washed up drunk. It then shows that moment he was taunted by John Holmes.

Moral of the story: Don't taunt a man because of his penis size.

This comic reminds me of eclectic piece which is a homage to Raymond Carver's short stories. People who were destined to become successful eventually ended up working at a dead end job due to having children. A person who was once good ended up becoming a drunk raising a sensitive child that is feared by his father. A boy who is now gay due to his resentment towards his father ended up having relationship with a certain ethnic minority that his father hate which he once loved. A granddaughter of an elderly man grew up to be a very unhappy mother probably raised by unhappy parents that was raised by an elderly man who was once an arrogant person which was chiseled away by many misfortunate events which shaped him up to become a better person.
