Actually, it looks more like that brown paper tape that has trouble sticking to anything that isn't smooth; look how difficult it is for the tape to be applied to the back of the cat. The reason the cat reacts this way doesn't have anything to do with pain. All animals have (including us) have various "knee-jerk" reactions programmed into our nervous system that doesn't require anything more than the brain-stem to be triggered (i.e. requires no conscious thought). Cats in particular have many of these; for example, a cat whose mid-brain and above has been separated from their spinal cord can still walk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPiLLplofYw). I suspect the cat's reaction might be an automatic attempt to avoid what it perceives as physical contact with an object.

The cat with packing tape on its back is reacting weirdly for the same reason the cat with tape on its head is in the harmless prank. It isn't being injured, it's just confused. You'd have to be a fucking idiot to think tape stuck to some fur does anything beyond feel weird. There's not enough tension for it to cause any pain.

How are those similar in any way? They put it on straight, flat sections in every instance, not a joint that is flexed at an extreme angle. Not to mention, skin forms a much tighter seal with tape since it has no give compared to fur which can shift around.

And then you just pull some bullshit out of your ass about cat fur sensitivity as if you had a fucking clue. Cats lick their fur with a spiny, coarse tongue on a constant basis, with enough force to tear a great deal of it out since they swallow it all the time. Holy fuck, imagine the incredible torture they must go through every day! Where are you to save the cats from themselves?

I've owned cats all of my life.. and I've also pet cats plenty of times. The small amount of tugging that goes on when I pet them doesn't seem to hurt them so I doubt the tape is going to have any effect at all.

A more apt analogy is put tape in your hair. It may hurt to remove, but it won't hurt while it's there. The reason it hurts on your leg is because some parts of the tape are attached to your skin directly.

It is not pulling their fur, it rather gives the cat the impression that it hits something on that side and the cat tries to circumvent that. Regarding the pulling off, see my post above.

The cat has longer, thicker hair and more malleable skin. It won't actually pull the hairs out as the cat moves. Put the piece of tape on top of your hairy head and move it around, it will be fine. But put it on the back of your neck, and the rope gets pulled tighter sooner, so to speak.

You're being melodramatic, when I put a walking harness on my cat he does the same thing. Cats are not big fans of having objects touch their bodies, especially while moving. My cat does barrel rolls on the ground when leashed up.

If this was hurting the cats it would be quite a bit more obvious.

There's a book out there, called "Here Kitty, Kitty..." by Richard Dommers. Some of the jokes are far too cruel/elaborate, but a few are harmless and would take a pretty smart cat to escape. If you can track it down, grab it. If for nothing else, a few crude laughs at your cat.

Just to clarify... cats aren't doing this because they're unintelligent. They do this because their whiskers are used for tactile sensation. When they feel something touching them, the post-it note in this case, they back away from it. Whether or not you find it funny doesn't make you a bad person, but don't call the poor guy stupid!

What science doesn't explain: Why putting tape on the side of a cat makes it walk sideways. A modern mystery! (Note, science probably does explain this one pretty thoroughly.)

Cats aren't capable of the abstraction involved in revenge-shitting. The cat thought process does not go "I don't like being shut out of the bedroom at night"--->"My human is responsible for me being shut out.--->"My human wouldn't like pee or poop on the bed/in the shoes"--->"Peeing/pooping on my human's bed/shoes will make my human know I don't want to be shut out of the bedroom at night. Therefore, I will pee/poop on the bed/in the shoes."

No, you can't call it revenge because he's not doing it to "get back" at you. Cats are emotional animals, but they lack the capacity for abstract reasoning. He's doing it because he's stressed and upset. The two main reasons for house soiling in cats are urinary tract infections and stress. Punishing a house soiling cat usually makes the problem worse, because the animal is more stressed out and upset. The first stop for any house soiling issue should be the vet to eliminate any medical reason for not going to the bathroom inside the litter box. After a UTI is ruled out, the problem can be addressed as a behavioral issue.
