Without any context it's impossible to say, but I'm certain that that was a sarcastic jibe, perhaps in response to someone who wrote in against hunting.

[–]irnec 60 points61 points ago

It's obviously sarcasm.

I can confidently state that no-one able to write into a paper could be that stupid.

You haven't read enough small town papers, then. Trust me, there are more than enough people out there that stupid.

The person writing has a fine command of English, so obviously it is a joke. (They've used the semicolon correctly for example.) You honestly think that 'trolls' are only on the internet?

[–]sje46 3 points4 points ago

(I think irnec's comment, itself, was sarcastic.)

[–]Iamnotyourlawyer 4 points5 points ago

There is no way that it could possibly be sarcastic. No one would ever be sarcastic about the quality of media these days.

[–]Quintote 4 points5 points ago

I'm sure you too are being sarcastic, but note the item after it appears to be a transcription from a call in voicemail type thing.

A local newspaper here -- one of the freebies that litter driveways -- at least used to have such a column. It was comedy gold. Basically, if it wasn't obscene, they'd print it.

It removed all barriers to publication, allowing the most unedited, impulsive responses by any level of literacy. My favorite would be ones where a person would tell off someone that was rude in the grocery store or in traffic.

Many, many inner city kids have no idea where their meat comes from. They don't know a carrot is a root, they don't know watermelons don't grow on trees. If you don't teach a kid, they don't know. And they grow into adults who don't know, either.

As a hunter I can tell you I get this kind of reaction all the time actually. I will be eating dinner talking about archery or something and someone eating a chicken breast or something will be like why do you kill animals? I just look at there food and ask them why do they do the same. At least mine was "free roaming" and organic if you want to talk ethics.

I'm a vegan and i have to agree. contrary to popular belief, hunting for your meat is a much more ethical alternative towards buying it in a super market. the difference being that store bought meat spends its entire life suffering in a factory farm whereas hunted meat actually has a relatively happy life before it dies.

[–]Ceci_Nest_Pas_Sparta 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. I'm a vegetarian, and I support the idea of hunting for food. Not for sport mind you, but I honestly think that if you want to eat meat, you should be willing to kill it. It's more ethical and, in my opinion, natural.

[–]robbykills 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was just going to post this same thing.

I don't ever really want to hunt. I used to work at a shooting range so I dealt with lots of hunters, as well as a few in my family. As far as getting meat, I would much rather have the animal enjoying life out in the wilderness before it catches a bullet, then have it shuffled through the animal equivalent of a death camp for a majority of its life. To me a hunter is just one more predator out in the wild that the hunted animal could fall victim to.

As long as you eat what you hunt, and are not a redneck-idiot drunk that doesn't even know how or care to take an animal cleanly I prefer this to how a majority get their meat.

[–]jaysire 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am imagining how one person from every asian family picks up his or her bow and arrows every friday and heads out into the woods to kill some food. 250 million people running around in the woods, shooting at everything that moves, fighting over the prey. I guess this romantic hunter-ideal only works if a minuscule fraction of the population does it. The rest of us has to get our meat from the farms.

[–]tubcat 2 points3 points ago*

I agree with you to an extent, but a wild life is not always a safe and happy life. In my region, we had a blue tongue plague in our whitetail populations during a drought. On top of being highly susceptible to adverse weather conditions, wild animals are still not ultimately more free from 'herd borne' parasites, bacteria, fungi, etc..

tl:dr Free or in a cage, life is a pain. Nihilism for the day.

EDIT: I meant to say that nearly an estimate 2/3 of our whitetail herds died that year. A lot of it was supposedly from the blue tongue outbreak moreso than the drought.

[–]Blue_Falcon 13 points14 points ago

There are multiple reasons for hunting. Food, sport, and population control. You see, we've killed off most of the wolf population. There aren't really any predators to feed on deer in Wisconsin. That got Chronic Wasting Disease. So now we're trying to slow or stop the spread of that with pretty much a kill everything in the infected areas mentality.

Honestly, it'd be better to kill the deer than to let them go around like that. I don't like senseless killing of animals, and do eat the meat when I do. I try to make it as quick as possible for the animal, however I've seen deer take multiple shots to vital organs and having it's throat slashed go on for about 30 minutes.

My other mentality on hunting is if Lions can do it, why not me? RAWR!

[–]redwall_hp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally, I can't wait for lab-grown meat. No animals necessary, and the meat would have less variation. (You would think McDonalds would want to invest in that.)

[–]portablebiscuit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Caveat: I'm not anti-hunting, but this is something I've wondered about for a while.

Deer hunters primarily go after the alpha males, the prime of the species with the largest antlers. While in nature the weak and sickly would be the ones culled from the herd. Is there any chance this kind of hunting damages the breeding stock?

[–]OHhokie1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

many hunters (like me) take does as well. If its your own property, you are supposed to do this to try to keep a somewhat even ratio of doe:buck (i thinke 3:2 is what is "ideal"). Plus does generally taste better.

plus the ones with the biggest antlers are usually 4-5 year old deer, they've mated quite a few times.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plenty of hunters don't shoot bucks, only fat tasty doe for meat.

I would love to join my friends hunting some time. I'll even bring my (empty) gun along!

Unfortunately I'm a bit of a pussy, so I don't want to deal with the part between when I pull the trigger, and the time I remove it from my fridge, so no shooting for me today. I'm too much of a wiener to take the life myself :/

[–]notaneggspert 0 points1 point ago

As an omnivore and non-hunter, let me answer this for you.

First, I think factory farming is awful and should be discouraged - smaller quantities of more-expensive meat would be a good thing for everyone, frankly.

However, by my ethics, farming in general is more acceptable. You only harvest what you grow yourself, plants and animals both. You don't just take. Also, I'd personally prefer a stun bolt to the back of the head while oblivious to being hunted down.

More to the point, though, is the fact that I really don't want to condone the concept of killing as entertainment, which is anathema to me.

If you can make a case that the 'natural' existence, with parasites, predators, injuries and starvation to deal with is a better deal for the animals than (humane, non-factory farming), then fair enough. End traditional meat farming, plant a lot of deer-friendly woodlands... and hire professional rangers to monitor and cull the population, and sell the meat on to the public. It'd be way cheaper; no feed costs, no water costs, no medicines or veterinary costs, etc.

But I don't think that would fly, somehow. I don't think the hunting population would give up the chance to pull the trigger themselves.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But factory farms are illegall in my country.

I remember when some friends from the US came to Germany and we took them to the supermarket to get meat for a barbecue. The meat counter had a sign a little bit like this and the girl freaked out. She had never made the connection between meat and animals in her life and it was just such a shock to her. I don't think it's so uncommon.

anecdote

For the last 2 years this 'environment-conscious' girl has been dating my friend. She has this practice when we go out for food - she loves ordering steak, but every time asks if it's "Happy Cows" meat. Every waiter I've ever seen her ask has looked at her confused and returned to the kitchen for an answer. While they're gone, she would take the time to explain to everyone at the table what it meant;

there's was this rating system, see? ..where, if the cow is treated well enough, it's certified 'happy cow'! and I don't want to eat unhappy cows, so I ask everywhere I go if they serve 'happy cows'!

We made fun of her boyfriend plenty in the 2 years for this (his roommates even took to buying jerky and labeling it 'Happy Jerky' before stashing it in the pantry) but for the most part, we just watched her make these orders for 2 years and didn't ask for any more details than she would automatically volunteer whenever we went out.

Fast forward to today, when I tried posting the "Happy Cows" rating system in this thread.

It doesn't exist.

For 2 years' worth of steaks, whenever the waiters would go back to kitchen to 'ask the chef' they would really be hitting up their other tables before coming back and automatically answering "yes" to her.

For the last two years she was not, in fact, eating "happy cows".

[–]diuge 2 points3 points ago

[–]jtmengel 2 points3 points ago

It pisses me off when people are anti-hunting without bothering to even learn what they are spouting off about. Hunting is critical to survival and quality of life of most game animals. Humans have taken out their natural predators, so without hunting, they are in deep shit.

Find a realistic, effective, practical alternative to hunting, and you'll be the first I've ever seen to do so.

If you care about animals... actually care about them... then you should be working for more hunting, not less.

I was actually almost killed by a deer a few years ago, just about made it through my windshield and took off my head. It did kill my car and make me a bloody mess.

so.. yep, I'd rather someone shoot them than have that happen again.

Are there any hunters on reddit reading this right now? How does the economics of it work out? I mean, if you go out and shoot a deer and take it home and butcher it, you'll have hundreds of pounds of good meat, right? Just put it in the deep freeze, and you're set for several months? I mean, it seems like occasionally taking an animal and processing it yourself would really be saving you quite a lot of money on food.

And can you just drop the animals off at a processing plant and pay them, or do some trade and get some percentage of the weight back in processed meat?

[–]gnatofdoom 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The last deer I brought home was a fawn, and it got me just under 20 pounds of meat. The tag cost me $4. It was a cull in an overpopulated area, so tag costs were minimal. Normally the tags would cost around $18 for antlerless (doe) and $40 for antlered (buck). This is for white-tailed deer. I think a full grown whitey doe has 50 or 60 pounds of usable meat on her, but I don't really weigh them. A full grown Mule Deer buck can weigh 300+ pounds, and you'll get well over a hundred pounds of meat off of one.

If you can butcher and process the meat yourself (as I do) it is very economical and can save a family a lot of money on groceries. Even better if you hunt elk or moose as they are huge fucking animals. If you cannot process it yourself you have to pay a butcher shop to do it and those costs can vary. The place I used to get sausage made costs 3.50 per pound (finished weight, they add 30% pork trim)) for sausage or 50 cents per pound to just have them grind and package it for you. $10 per animal if they debone it for you. Depending how much meat you bring them it can easily end up equal to or more expensive than store bought meat.

The costs of the hunt itself can vary too. My rifle is a hundred years old and cost me a hundred bucks. An entry level hunting rifle (in canadian dollars) will cost at least 350, and that's with no optics. People hunt with rifles that cost thousands of dollars (and scopes that cost just as much or more). You also have to pay for fuel, which can be a lot if you hunt far from home. You use fuel while scouting too. Learning where the deer are and what their patterns/habits are. I don't waste money on camo, as I live on the prairies and someone dressed in forest camo laying in a snowy farmers field looks ridiculous. Other miscellaneous gear costs money too, though.

You can only hunt at certain times of the year, so usually it's more than one animal at a time. I'm hoping for 2 doe and maybe a buck this year. Possible a couple more does if they do the cull I mentioned again in January. That will easily last my family until the next hunting season, unless we share a whole lot of it.

Im a hunter and every time i see a cattle truck (i live next to hatfield meats and a tyson chicken plant) i think of jews being taken to a concentration camp. Its really sad, you can see and hear it in the pigs and cows faces and their whines; they know where they are going. At least when i hunt, the animal had a full life, it got to roam around and enjoy the world before i took its life for my survival.

BUT there is a difference between killing a wild animal, and eating food from the store. One can heavily impact the ecosystem, and the other..... not so much. Not saying hunting should be disallowed or anything, but hunting=/=buying meat at the store.

I kill dear (aka "harvest") and eat them. Great, lean meat. Butcher them myself and even make great jerky. The alternative where I live (NJ) is to see them get hit by cars... increasing car insurance rates and seeing the indescriminate slaughter on the side of the road (I believe that there may be more than 25,000 deer per year killed by cars in NJ)

It really puts everything in perspective, you gain a lot of respect for mother nature when you understand that you have to take a life to sustain yours. </rant>

This person does understand that hunters are a leading funder of natural areas that we all enjoy, yes? Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Trout Unlimited, and on and on. Not a hunter but I tip my hat to those with the honesty to humanely harvest their own meat instead of paying into factory farms. Hunters are all right in my book.

The sad part is, I've heard a similar argument. A girl I was talking to, declared that it was more humane to eat meat grown in farms then to hunt animals.

Better to eat meat that was raised for killing, as opposed to the wild creatures of the forest was her logic, or whatever passed for it.

The fact of the matter is with the industrialization that we have been encountering is diminishing animals habitats. What people do not realize is that without hunting, this could be a much larger problem. There is road kill everywhere and I see Deer on a daily basis where I live (Michigan) and without registered, calculated hunting (doe permits, tags, etc.) many more animals would be dying from cars and starving due to lack of environment to properly survive.

TL;DR Without hunting animals would be starving and road kill would become an even larger problem.
