Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I almost called Bullshit! Because my friend made this~~ hi-res~~ 480p time lapse video and it looks similar.

I think these guys live in the same apartment.

Cool video, but high resolution that ain't.

Hmmm, he used a Panasonic DMC-FZ35 which shoots 1280 x 720 which still isn't super hi. I didn't check the uploaded resolution. Oooops.

Do you have any photos of the after effects? I have seen a lot of pictures/videos of it coming, but never of what happens after it swept by.

everything was covered in dirt. that seems like a smartass answer, but essentially what happened. dirt, leaves, tree limbs everywhere. parts of the valley also got moderate to heavy rainfall, so with all the dust, then add water, it became a coating of mud.

the next day, there were huge waiting lines at the car washes. lots of sweeping and window washing. also, there's been a larger amount of dust particles in the air, so everything is a bit hazy.

This is what I love about "nasty" Phoenix weather. In other parts of the country/world, when you see photos or video of extreme weather, you just know that people are going to die, property will be destroyed, and lives are about to be upended. In Phoenix, a picture like this means "darn, going to have to sweep off my patio and spend a few extra hours cleaning the pool".

[–]wonderfulmetropolis 6 points7 points ago

That's assuming you have properly working/sufficient weather stripping on doors/windows! I'm in Tempe and everything in my condo had a film of dust over it.

Arizona air quality in 1880 != Arizona air quality in 2011.

Also, Holliday, like many of the time period, had tuberculosis, and it wasn't so much the air quality that drove sufferers of it to Arizona, it was to seek a drier climate. He was from Georgia.

[–]az_liberal_geek 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It used to be true that Arizona was a great place to go for people with allergy-based asthma. Those days are long gone. These days, AZ is one of the worst places to go.

The reason AZ was so good, back in the day, was because there were so few pollen producing plants here. The few plants that were here didn't typically cause allergic reactions in people. But as more and more people moved here, they brought their favorite plants and little by little, ever single one of the nasty pollens came here, too. Now, if you are allergic to anything plant related, there is a good chance that it's growing in AZ.

I think it has more to do with particulate matter pollution from transportation and industry.

Phoenix's air got bad when it became the 6th most populated city in the US with very little wind to blow air pollution away.

[–]shakitlikasaltshakr 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, Phoenix is tied for 2nd worst air quality by year-round particulate concentration

Tucson however, is 3rd best!

Live in Chandler. I was finishing up my 4th of July weekend Lord of the Rings trilogy extended editions marathon (crazy holiday weekend I know), and this hit as Frodo and Sam where getting deep into Mordor. They probably won't for long, unfortunately. They have a great hockey team and don't even know it. I think the big mistake was building that arena in Glendale instead of Phoenix or Tempe.

[–]Likes2PaintShit[S] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

During the 1960s there were eight dust storms that caused some serious damage; 13 more in the 1970s; 14 in the 80s and more than 20 in the 1990s. Recently Australia was having problems with dust storms. Researchers said the storms cost Australia about $20 million a year in medical bills because of asthma and respiratory disease which is thought to be caused by dust storms. source

Those could be Ball Lightning considering the unique friction between the ground and the sky. Ball Lightning is said to occur during bad thunderstorms. Super-cell thunderstorms sometimes have down drafts called Microbursts that have similar wind currents to haboobs.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/Haboob_Ransom_Canyon_Texas_2009.jpg

Found this photo.

Haboob moving across the Llano Estacado toward Yellow House Canyon near the residential community of Ransom Canyon, Texas (18 June 2009)

Zoomed in and on the left side just above the dust cloud there is also a white spot. These fuckers is like dust mites if you ask me. I'm sure there's a scientific explanation for this. I believe in alien life forms but definitely not in the kind who jumps in flying saucers, spent 200 hundred years to get here, and then just stay for a dust storm before they leave again. To far fetched for me.

Is there any pictures from within the storm. I drove about 15 miles on the freeway across town in the middle of this thing. It felt like the goddamn Apocalypse. You know that scene where Constantine visits hell? Imagine that with zero visibility 20 feet in every direction. The fucking sky ceased to exist! I was trapped on this planet beneath a wall of dust. And the wind inside that thing was no joke. My car was being whipped back and forth like a Hot Wheels car, and there was nothing I could do about it. For about a 4 mile stretch, I was between two semis on the road. I was sure I was going to be crushed by them. Finally, I get to my destination, run out of my car into my buddy's place, and coughed up a lungful of dust. It was amazing. But I was driving alone so I couldn't take any pictures myself.

About 30 miles SE from there is where I live, and it was even bigger out here because it had yet to hit any major obstacles. I saw it coming, went out on my patio, lit a cigarette and stood there waiting.

I quickly decided to skip out on that plan, though, when the wind that preceded the dust hit me and knocked me back a bit. I got inside just as the wall hit and visibility dropped to about five feet. I was just glad as hell I wasn't on the road or something.

[–]Joe_12265 2 points3 points ago

Does closing the windows and doors keep the dust out? If not how much gets inside? Do you have dust everywhere, like in the sheets and drawers and shit?

[–]wonderfulmetropolis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on how new/recent/effective all the weather stripping is in your home. I live in a strip of condos in Tempe that got hit stupidly hard. My front door has one of those mail slots on it and after the storm everything in the place had a fairly thick film of dust on it. :(

Interesting. I've read accounts of the dustbowl and they had dust everywhere, in everything. All of their food was crunchy.

I have a neverending battle with dust and that is without mile high duststorms.

[–]mjettp 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hard to say but let me assure you, its fun to watch

[–]Supervisor194 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, blowing dust happens every year pretty much when the monsoon comes, just not quite this huge. Every two or three years you'll get footage on TV of a wall of dust marching across the city. This one was special though.

It's not nearly as scary as it looks. Just dirt that's gotta be swept up and the car wash you got yesterday was a waste, etc.

[–]theghostofme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's pretty regular in the summers when the monsoons start, though I can never remember one that big.

They usually precede an awesome thunderstorm that will wash all the dust away, but it was pretty dry after the wall hit, so this time the dust is still all over the fucking place.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dust storms happen every year. The recent one was particularly large.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dust storms are a lot of fun to watch come in. They really don't cause too much damage unless they're packing a lot of wind. This one just happened to be massive!

If you can make it through the summers, winter here is unbeatable. Best weather by far!

1996 really bad dust storm that stretched between Tuscon and Phoenix, I was trapped with my GF on the I-10 just north of the exit to Eloy with no visibility beyond the front of my car. Even with the headlights lights off and the fog lights on I could not get visibility. So my girlfriend and I sat on the I -10 for an hour and a half. We could hear other people all around us. After the storm had passed it took another 3 hours to get to Tuscon because of all the accidents.

I love Phoenix so much, one of the fastest growing cities in the nation and the Downtown area, looks like mine in a city of 100,000 people.

Must have something to do with the whole building code thing. You know where you can't have a building any taller than xx stories, because otherwise it would cook you like an oven?

[–]predhead7 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has to do with idiot city planners not understanding that sprinkler cities are NOT the future.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For a long time, building out has been much more economical than building up.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Phoenix also has a couple "downtown" areas. Downtown has some tall buildings. Midtown (just north of downtown) has some tall buildings. The Biltmore area has some tall buildings. And the Scottsdale Waterfront area has some tall buildings.

I never saw one of these until I moved out west. I was standing on the roof of a ten-story building, watching it roll in, completely amazed. And then I nearly choked to death on the dust. TL;DR, watch the dust storm from inside.
