Jupiter is already in our sky... I think you mean if it were closer earth. But how close would be good information to include.

Sorry, yes. It's been scaled compared to the moon, so this is what it would look like if it was at the same distance our moon is.

Good clarification--but center-to-center or surface-to-surface?

EDIT: of course, the 1st would be a big issue--not that the second wouldn't be....

Hmm.Well, I sized the moon in a picture of the sky, got the size difference between the moon and Jupiter and scaled the picture of Jupiter to that size. So not sure 100%, but I would say it's surface to surface. I think my scaling would put the center of Jupiter further away.

Not exactly. If Jupiter were that close, then the gravitational force it would exude on our planet would drasically change our tides. With the change in tides would also come extreme weather patterns. In all likelyhood, the sky would be filled with enough vapor and clouds at any given time that we'd no longer be able to see out of our atmosphere.

This is if Jupiter was at the same distance to Earth as the moon is. It was never meant to be very practical. We always see those fantasy images (or movies such as avatar) with the huge planet in the sky, I thought it'd be interesting to see that with a known planet, and give a sense of scale (scaled versus the moon).

Came here to post that I would be preparing for the end of time. But I think you nailed it.

Also, if we were that close, Jupiter's electromagnetic field would fry our atmosphere! Source: How the Universe Works: Extreme Planets ( that I watched last night :) ) Fun facts!

I think you mean "we wouldn't exist, at least in our current form".

Sources to back up your statement?:

In all likelyhood, the sky would be filled with enough vapor and clouds at any given time that we'd no longer be able to see out of our atmosphere.

I consider this a fair question, since pwnies is likely speculating.

Truth is, we really have only best guesses as to what would happen. For that matter, the image itself offers too little information on the subject. Are we orbiting Jupiter? Does Earth still have its own Van Allen radiation belts? Can Earth endure Jupiter's electromagnetic field? Would Earth's atmosphere remain stable?

There are too many questions.

If the Earth were this close to Jupiter, the tidal force is probably strong enough to make the volcanoes erupt continuously, hence blocking out the sky. See the Jovian moon Io.

[–]olgrandad 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If Earth were orbiting as close to Jupiter as Io, it's crust would be cracking open and the atmosphere would be clouded with volcanic ash. Pwnies claimed the tides (oceanic) would be greater and thus it would be cloudier.

I assumed pwnies knew something about tidal forces I didn't (that they wouldn't have an effect on Earth from that close of an orbit) so I asked for references.

Apparently it's wrong to do that on reddit, thus I'm getting downvoted.

What do you mean 'in our sky'? Like, Moon-distance orbit?

[–]jb2386[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry, I was up late doing this. Yes, I meant if it was at the same distance as the moon is.

[–]ColumW 1 point2 points ago

I feel like the picture doesn't show it as being big enough.

[–]jb2386[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't forget you're roughly seeing a quarter of it, it would be taking up most of the sky. I put it in size comparison to how the moon shows up in a photo, so to your eye it would probably look bigger. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at the moon, then take a picture, it looks a lot smaller in the picture)

[–]ColumW 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well said. I concede my point.

In the daytime sky. The moon isnt always visible in the day, but you can see it at times

[–]lkbm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the daytime sky from moon-distance orbit? Certainly not from its actual orbit.

[–]Urusai89 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, from high earth orbit. You wouldn't see detail like that unless it was close enough. When people say 'in the sky', it's basically what we see easily when looking up. At night, our sky is full of stars. Those stars aren't literally in the sky, or within the boarders of our solar system. Based off the size though, I'd say it's farther than the moon. I'd imagine if Jupiter's surface was as close to us as the moon is now, it would be MUCH bigger, probably covering the entire sky facing the planet.

In reality, I doubt such a planet would be capable of being so close to use without destroying all life or at least drastically changing conditions on Earth.

If Jupiter was that close earth would be destroyed. We would ether be sucked into Jupiter or orbit around it and get pulled away from the sun and freeze.

I wonder how many cults would be formed off of the weather on Jupiter. Big storm for weeks = apocalypse.

A rational way to grasp the size difference between the Earth and Jupiter is this; it takes a commercial jet 2 days to circumnavigate the Earth. That same jet would take 3 weeks to circumnavigate Jupiter.

[–]jb2386[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks, that was my point. It was just a visual experiment! I did scale Jupiter relative to the size of the moon so we'd get some sort of sense of scale.

What a terrible title, absolutely no logical context, and [like everyone's been pointing out] it is already in our sky. Other than the moon it is the easiest object in the night sky to see with the naked eye.

The title should be something more along the lines of "If Earth was one of Jupiter's Moons" or something like that.

Also, they've solved the mystery of Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

keep in mind that would be still if jupiter was millions of miles away still. the thing is so huge, if it was the same distance away as the moon is now, it would engulf the earth. the closest it could get, it would take up the entire sky. its super big.

[–]cmorris666 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the closest it could get, it would take up the entire sky.

This would be true of the moon too, if it came close enough.

[–]Cragvis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well the moon would have to be incredibly close to fill the whole sky. jupiter can be further away to do that.

[–]cmorris666 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, Jupiter is big, got it.
