I've noticed redditors tend to suck at correctly identifying animals. A cool 'leopard' was actually a jaguar, a crazy 'monkey' was, in fact, a gibbon, a huge python was mis-identified as an 'anaconda', and now we have an alpaca being called a 'llama'. Soon we will see videos of pangolins labeled 'See the silly armadillo" and gifs of ringtails titled 'Cute lemur I saw at the Grand Canyon'.

No other criticism of folks on Reddit - people are generally awesome, but the repeated complete ignorance of what animals are properly called amazes me. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? Or am I just a guy who grew up wanting to be the next Alfred Russel Wallace and maybe has an unhealthy obsession with guanacos, vicunas, pangolins and the like?

Thanks. That is actually about as concise a bit of wisdom as I've ever heard. Considering that my degree is in geography, with an emphasis in political geography, I'd never particularly thought my knowledge of zoology to be much above average. I should remember that the same people on Reddit calling gibbons "monkeys' also think 'Enders' Game' beats Shakespeare, Kubrick towers over Ford, Kurosawa and Bergman and that Ron Paul would make an excellent president.

I apologize for the implied insult if you are an Ender, Kubrick or Paul fan. We are all misguided about some things: I have been known to publicly defend the films of Kurt Russell and Paul Walker(!), openly admire Barry Bonds and think Russell Banks' "Rule of the Bone" is as good a book as "Catcher in the Rye".

Again, appreciate the words greatly and apologize if I've said anything insulting.

Yes. Llamas do but alpacas don't. An alpaca foot has a big pad on the bottom like a dog, making them more stable in rough terrain.
