this guy sits on the corner of Washington and Lincoln in Venice. Uncle Darrows is a bomb ass cajun joint and its directly behind him. My dad drove past this dude once and and mummered "how do you know my life is that great?" to himself not to the guy. I was reminded of a cartoon, one which depicts the debt levels of various people surrounding a homeless man, everyones thousands in the red while the homeless man has got about $3.45. I'm sure this man is a nice person. Just rambling I guess.

Tried to find a link to this cartoon, was not successful but then again I'm very lazy.

Not to be that guy, but I remember the counterpoint to this was that all those people could sell their possessions and would most likely end up with more than the homeless guy even after paying off their debt.

The image really illustrates that "cashflow" is far more important than "debt load".

Homeless most certainly doesn't mean heartless. Just because they are homeless doesn't mean it was entirely their fault. There are some really nice homeless people out there.

[–]Pinhedd 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some people are homeless just because they don't want to give a fuck about anything. The 28th amendment should be the right to not give a fuck

[–]threading 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they don't want to give a fuck about anything.

I'm pretty sure some of them did many attempts to solve their problems until coming to the point of "not giving a fuck about anything".

[–]swskeptic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think what he was getting at is a lot of homeless people don't see their homelessness as a "problem", they prefer it.

[–]Pinhedd 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm well aware of that, hence "some". I'm well aware that a vast majority of them aren't out there by choice

There always is a little something, not particularly their fault though, that triggered everything. Can be a mental disorder (schizophrenia, depression...). Life is a random bitch.

I was waiting to meet a friend on a street corner once, and I was in a really crappy mood because I had just messed something up pretty badly. I guess my mood was evident in my face. A homeless guy in a wheelchair passes by me and says something along the lines of "Hey, don't be so sad! It can't be that bad!"

[–]thehumanear 1 point2 points ago

I like the homeless guy's style, but what if some black kid with no arms held a similar sign right next to him? Then he's the asshole. And on and on.

There will always be someone worse off than you. So stop moping and have some goddamn fun.

[–]mexicodoug 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what if some black kid with no arms held a similar sign right next to him?

Well, I'd have the kid sign a contract making me his agent and get him a job in a Mexican circus. It ain't easy holding a sign when you ain't got no arms, but if you can do it, it's worth at least fifty pesos a day. Hell of a lot more than the damn Army will pay an armless boy.

[–]ShamAbram 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was visualizing him with the sign in his mouth. Semantics aside, mexican circus's are awesome as hell.

Chris Rock

If a homeless person has a funny sign, he hasn't been homeless that long.

A REAL homeless person, is too hungry, to be funny.

I bought this guy a hot dog and soda from the costco he hangs out by once. It was awesome.

Which? The hot dog or the soda or the costco?

Such contrived bullshit, pain and sufferring is relative, not absolute. If I've never been homeless, wrecking my car might be the worst thing that has ever happened to me, where if I've never wrecked my car having my girl friend dumping me might be the worst. Humans can only compare things internally in any realistic manner, I can only truly comprehend the bad thing that's happening to me now to the bad things that have already happened to me.

Yes, I can understand and empathize with someone else's pain but empathy and actually feeling something are two wholly different things. I can look at someone starving and empathize with their situation but I've never gone a week without full nourishment so I can't fully understand it.

A sign like this basically preys on a well-off person's guilt for not having experienced true hard-ship and you know what? That's bullshit. No one should feel guilty because of circumstance, not yours or someone else's. My feelings aren't all of a sudden diminished because of someone else's feelings and I don't automatically feel better knowing someone else is worse off than me. What pisses me off the most about this is it's almost based on the premise that I should get some sort of joy out of the fact this guy doesn't have a home which is another ploy to try and make me feel unwarranted guilt.

[–]Fyrus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm with this guy. Said homeless person isn't trying to make you feel better about not being homeless, he's making you think that he's a nice guy you should give change to.

You are missing my point...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

your point isn't relative to the picture at hand, he isn't trying to make you feel guilt, but rather the joy that you are not him...

[–]Yargyarg 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, definitely didn't get my point.

[–]lukasbradley 1 point2 points ago

I see this guy every morning on my commute (Mar Vista to Santa Monica via Abbot Kinney).

The best part, to me, is that his sign is the backside of a "No Parking between 2 AM and 7 AM" traffic sign.

I try to be efficient when I help out the homeless. I would rather buy a small present in the store I go into than come out with change. A cold beverage on a hot day is always an appreciated present.

[–]mexicodoug 5 points6 points ago*

When they're looking a bit sad and worn, a line of cocaine always pops a perky smile to their face, too. I feel a warm radiance down in the middle of my chest and belly when I can bring a smile to their faces and appreciation beaming from their eyes... the hell with just tossing them a coin.

Of course it doesn't; in fact, just the opposite- the homeless are a bountiful source of harvestable organs, including the heart.

He's still after money. He's just trying to make you feel bad for him so you will give it too him.

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point ago

That was my first thought, but sometimes people are just really nice and want to make other people feel good. So my second thought was "Man, if it was me I'd hope that people wouldn't think I was just trying to get pity dollars..." Sometimes you've gotta look at things from multiple perspectives.

Its funny how homeless people and like, people in third world/developing nations (I grew up in the Philippines. Now in the US), usually seem to complain about life significantly less than people in the US.

A homeless person told me and a group of friends once to cheer up when we were walking down the streets of downtown Vancouver. I guess we looked depressed but we were just tired. It was one of the things I've always remembered from the trip though.

I have limited experience with the homeless, but I have helped a little. What I took away from it was that they were more thankful & full of love than the average person. I'm sure that isn't always the case, but it's been my experience.
