HOLY SHIT I OWNED THIS BOOK

[–]Neoflare 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think we had it in the school library as a kid. I remember making every single one of them and getting yelled at for throwing a chain of 10 in a row in one of my classes.

[–]GifelteFish 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did too. If I remember correctly the last dozen or so pages were paper for making the actual planes, complete with dotted fold-here and cut-here lines. My only problem was that the fucking paper was thick and glossy just like the rest of the book, rendering it useless.

[–]SteinyBoy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i have the a pretty similar book except in mine the paper has legit designs and is perfect, i better not lose that book its pretty awsome

So did I. It was awesome.

E: At least, I'm 99% sure I did. Did it come with special paper to make the planes with? By the looks of the picture it would. So yeah, I think I owned this. A picture of the cover would help though.

I think this is the one my younger brother had. We made each of them to test which flew best. One called the Concorde, looked like a Concorde, flew best by far. Makes sense I suppose.

canard you silly fuck

[–]dWillPrevail 0 points1 point ago

Thanks arsehole, this isn't the entire book - and if it is, it isn't the same one. The one I recall definately has a model called concorde that is loosely based off of a concorde but, you know, have a jab based on an assumption.

[–]ddesla2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aw dont be sad babe, I was only kidding. I'm sure there is a concorde plane out there.... If not, I'll make one for you. Love ya babe. Love ya lots. Ttyl. Facebook me.

For those who don't know, this is the best (in my opinion) paper airplane that I ever make. http://www.zurqui.com/crinfocus/paper/airplane.html

[–]magicrice 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Checked comments to find this exact plane, was not disappointed. You sir, get an upvote.

[–]firepelt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've tried to make that plane before, and I usually come close, but I just cannot get it right. When I tried making that it didn't fly at all with the tail. Without the tail you would throw it, it would do a backflip, and then it would somehow rotate halfway and fly rather well upside down.

Don't ask me how.

[–]Niqulaz 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ahem...

Some purists believe that a proper airplane is folded from a single sheet of paper, without needing scissors in order to complete the process.

Some purists also believe that despite not being folded from a single piece of paper, this plane, with it's detatchable rudder, makes an excellent delivery system for small notes.

[–]Tetha 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Less purist, more lazy.

[–]onionman1248 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Instead of scissors, I crease the paper and lick the fold a couple of times until I can tear off the tail section.

[–]onionman1248 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an aerospace engineer, this is my favorite. All the other common paper airplane designs look like high-speed fighters, meaning they can't glide very far. This one is shaped like a glider compared to the rest, and it has its center of mass in the right place for stability.

Octal is base-8. The joke is that it doesn't make sense.

Man this used to be such a great thing to pass the time with, hours. I don't see my nephews or nieces doing it.

My grandfather always brought home a ton of old OTB (Off Track Betting) race sheets and we'd use those so its not like we were wasting paper that was unused already. But of course we didn't recycle it either...

tl;dr - Ehh, recycling? GET OFF MY LAWN!

[–]JimmerUK 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went to an open day at my nephew's school a few months back. It was an opportunity for family members, other than their parents, to see what they did, and a chance for the kids to show off their work.

There were a few tables set out with different activities, lego, painting, trainsets, etc. My nephew, Jack, was sitting at the drawing table which simply had blank A4 sheets and a bucket of crayons.

Jack saw one of the other kids attempt to make a paper plane, and asked me to do one for him. I have most of these designs memorised, so I made him a Hawkeye and a Triplane, along with one not featured: The UFO. We launched them across the classroom and they flew a good distance.

Suddenly I had kids queuing up beside me, clamouring for paper planes. They'd never seen anything like them before and were astounded.

Parents, aunts, uncles, and even the teachers asked me to show them how to make the planes.

I just think that in this age of Nintendo DS, xBox, and constant TV, kids don't have the opportunity to want to make things like paper planes. It never crosses their mind. However, show them that it's possible and they love it.

It's great for kids because there's many different aspects to each plane. The different shapes, the different attributes, tweaking each plane to get it to spin or fly higher etc, and then colouring it in.

[–]crod242 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess it's not a gambling problem if it's giving the kids something positive to do.

[–]JonVisc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I guess it is certainly a problem because he still gambles. He also stomps his way there and back everyday, about 2 miles. Not much til I mention he is 96.

But he also brought home way more sheets than he actually needed...

TIL My grandfather is an addict and klepto :-/

(Really its a TIR; today I realized)

Flying rings FTW! I love making these, because it's easy, and no one ever expects it to fly.

[–]Tidler 5 points6 points ago

When I used to make these number 2 worked the best by far. heavy nose and simple design so it was easy to make symmetrical.

[–]Woot45 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no idea whatsoever what the instructions want me to do for that one, and I've folded origami things before. The barely-visible arrows make no sense.

[–]invertedspear 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would make #2 out of those giant desk calandar sheets. That design scales up beautifully.

[–]mepardo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Idk about any of the others, but number 1 is the one my dad taught me when I was a kid and it's the one I always use. Flies really great and you can add elevators to make it do tricks and stuff.

[–]kitd 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recommend Glider #2. You can get pretty good results with that.

[–]Woot45 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The third one works pretty well, and is really easy to remember how to make.

[–]Niqulaz 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can alter the wing-shape of #2 quite a lot.

For instance, rather than the diagonal fold for the body, you can make a body with a straight angle fold for the wings, an inch high the entire length of the plane.

That leaves you with an enormous wing area that gives you lots and lots of gliding ability. Folding up the wingtips also allows you to adjust and iron out any imperfections if it tends to drag left or right. Tearing it a tail stabilizer also helps.

Edit: Like this.

Number one is essentially "the glider" with the nose folded in. It gives it more weight in the front and makes the construction less flimsy.

I think that is actually from a daily paper airplane calendar. I had it two years ago and thought to would be fun in the office, unfortunately the planes dont fly that good. But they look good :)

[–]PeptoDysmal 0 points1 point ago

I had this BOOK.

It even came with stickers and such, like the one you see on the top plane. This really brings back memories.

And all the planes too... ohhh, man. Every one so different from each other, but flew so magnificiently. They were all made so complexly too. My brothers and I would spend hours trying to figure out how to do it right. When we did, it was the greatest feeling ever. We would rush to the backyard to fly them asap.

There is only one true paper plane.

Fold the corners. Fold the same corners again. Put the two sides together. Fold the wings.

You can make it look badass by adding paddles to the wings.

It looks like the fucking Concorde. The concorde, the fastest civil airplane in the world. It was designed after this paper plane.

Seriously, it's a sleek and efficient design.

All of these look clunky. Inferior papercraft.

Yes, I made the instructions. No, I didn't come up with the design.

On the shuttle one, if you stop at step 6 it looks like a shuttle from Star Wars

I designed a paper airplane that flies like a bird. Its wings actually flap.

That is how I spent my time in the linux lab at college.

Edit: I think I still have the directions for it.

I make the number 1 paper plane but I don't fold in the point of the glider. Works fine for me.

No dart? That was the plane to beat back in the day - every other fancy plane sucked.

I remember a windows 98 program that gave instructions on how to make hundreds of different paper airplanes. I think it came in some sort of demo pack with tons of different games in it. I know the demo pack had stuff like Jazz Jackrabbit and Rise of the Triad, along with (for some strange reason), a program called Python, though I never knew what it did. It couldn't have been a Python interpreter back then, could it?).

God, I've been looking for this forever, but no luck.

EDIT: Holy Shit! I remember all of these planes being on there.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft Publisher or something had paper airplane templates you could print out too. Maybe it still does?

Yes, I just checked. It definitely still does. Awesome!
