It always makes me sad thinking those guys fought in WWII, then came home and couldn't sit in the same restaurant as a white person. To fight for your country with such pride then come back as a second class citizen.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

They were probably second class in the armed forces too.

It seems to have been a mixed bag. Many black soldiers and units were highly respected, but I'm sure even the most respect black soldiers experienced their fair share of racism.

I imagine that any time blacks served in a combat situation the race lines tended to blur or disappear entirely. I can't keeping up with your racism when there is a black guy next to you protecting your ass from incoming Germans.

Also the "most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients" was the all Japanese American 442nd Infantry Regiment.

You would think this would be more well known or at least have a big budget Hollywood movie, considering they were fighting while their families back home were all locked up.

I thought they usually tried to keep whites and blacks separated, so maybe this didn't occur much. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Units were kept segregated but sometimes units had to fight together as well. I know there were also often black sailors who served on otherwise all white ships. I was just reading The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, which is about the battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Taffy 1, 2, and 3 task forces off Samar.

The captain of one of the destroyers spoke very highly of the one black sailor he had on his ship. Black sailors would have had dangerous, dirty, or menial jobs but everyone was in harms way when the cannons roared, and many black sailors distinguished themselves to their fellow sailors.

And then you had whole units of Blacks who distinguished themselves in combat. The Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Battalion are just two that come to mind. They weren't universally accepted by white soldiers, but they were certainly respected by many.

Unless you and me where there in that time period we could never know. But I tell you one thing If i was fighting next to a black man and he got shot I would help carry him to a med station.

It's all how the person was raised..

This really bothered both Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson as well (I have never heard anything specifically similar about either Eisenhower or Kennedy, though both were sympathetic to civil rights).

Truman once said

My very stomach turned over when I learned that Negro soldiers, just back from overseas, were being dumped out of army trucks in Mississippi and beaten. Whatever my inclination as a native of Missouri might have been, as President I know this is bad. I shall fight to end evils like this

and at another point

When the mob gangs can take four people out [one of whom, Truman knew from the report, was a recently returned veteran] and shoot them in the back, and everybody in the county is acquainted with who did the shooting and nothing is done about it, that country is in a pretty bad fix from the law enforcement standpoint. When a mayor and a City Marshal can take a negro Sergeant off a bus in South Carolina, beat him up and put out one of his eyes, and nothing is done about it by the State Authorities, something is radically wrong with the system.

Johnson, himself from Texas, once said the following when trying to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed

The negro fought in the war. He's not gonna keep taking the shit we're dishing out. We're in a race against time. If we don't act, we're going to have blood in the streets.

I think that WWII did quite a bit for the civil rights movement in a subtle way. It forced people to realize the injustice of the system.

[–]cactusfrog 3 points4 points ago

It also gave many people the confidence to stand up. Once they had faced German tanks they were less fearful to fight for their rights.

Truman was the one who actually desegregated the armed forces , lest not forget Roosevelt which made it illegal for companies under defense contracts (during ww2) to discriminate in hiring.

Not to be a dick but you were a lot more likely to die as a soldier fighting for the united states if you were white. Due to generals believing that black units couldn't be trusted to hold their place in the line, a lot of their duties were mainly planned to be support units freeing up white soldiers to go and fight.

However an interesting counterpoint is that the French unit picked to liberate Paris was chosen because it was the only majority white group the french could find! All of the other units were filled with African's from French territory.

[–]macmillie 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not about the threat of death or wound. It's that they sacrificed and offered their service and lives for the country, the same pledge as any soldier, and should have earned the same honor as any white man at home.

[–]Johnnietee 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think if you didn't preface it with "not to be a dick" then it wouldn't give the impression that you are trying to take anything away from the sacrifices of black soldiers. Might be better to preface it with "Interesting fact,"

It's like I see what you're saying but it's whenever someone starts with "not to be...." I always just end up reading it with the idea that that's exactly what they're being

[–]ishk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why you're being downvoted. The post above justly argues that they deserved equal rights particularly after having risked 'death or wound'.. You aren't challenging this at all but simply supplementing this topic with relevant and interesting bits of history.. You even prefaced it with 'Not to be a dick'!

It makes me realize that the war was very real and happened just a few decades ago, the sky that was above them during the battles was exactly the same, that the soil that was once soaked in their blood is still there etc. black and white photos just dont do it for me

[–]guitar999111 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel the same way. Something about black and white photos makes history seem made up, almost, but when you see a shot like this in full color, it really does increase the impact tremendously.

I think the soliders in this picture were in the division my grandfather served for and died in. These men were probably with the 333rd or the 969th division. These brave soldiers were key in keeping Bastogne from falling to the Germans.

You can find out more about them here: http://www.bjmjr.net/ww2/ardennes.htm

And about my grandfather, William Amann, here: http://alwagner.org/william.html#wja

It's great to see a picture of these troops.

inscribing your ordnance is a pretty old tradition. Many sling bullets have been discovered with inscriptions that translate as "take it" or "this is for your dick" and sometimes even "an unpleasant gift".

It doesn't matter what flag they fought for, even if that flag was the Nazi flag. For the most part, as in any army, German soldiers were just regular young men fighting for their country and trying to survive a terrible war. They were humans too, and it's not right to demonize them and lump them together with the Nazi government and the SS.

Just an FYI that any time pineapples and Hitler are mentioned, the pineapples are generally referring to the mkII shrapnel grenades. Kind of annoys me when the pair are mentioned and it's an actual pineapple fruit.

One example and probably worst abuse of this is Little Nicky, although the movie IS a parody and this is probably intended.

funny story my german grandpa told me. he was in a pow camp in california, but they were allowed to go to town, work etc. so he also got to drive a truck (as a prisoner) loaded with wooden planks etc for building. instead of delivering it to the building site, he just sold it to some townspeople. so he comes back to the camp, money hidden. black guard searches him, finds the money, takes him to the commander. commander asks my granddad " did this man" (guard) find this money on you? granddad answers: " no i have never seen this guy in my life" granddad gets acquitted; commander says" i certainly think that this is your money, but i cant trust a black guy more than a white man, even if you are a prisoner and he a guard"

*true story.

Ja ja, I got der joke. It wasn't that funny actually, as the piss-poor American military couldn't build a bomb that landed straight. So many innocent German civilians, women und children died from those same two bombs that der negros are holding in the picture. Looks like random acts of violence for these people still hasn't changed over the years.

amirite?

No worries, as I cooked up a scheme with my old buddy Prescott Bush to have his Grandson win the election und create hurricane Katrina that demolished all of der negro neighborhoods in Louisiana.

The negros send me bombs with "funny" slogans on them, I send the negros a category 5 fucking hurricane to destroy them 50 years later (we Germans can control the weather).
