I've had one for 4 years.. they are awesome. I fed it dead frozen mice/rats I got from a pet shop.

You can leave on holiday for a week and not worry about them needing to be fed.

they're really fucking chill to have around - not all attention whore. They don't make noise. As long as you feed them and acclimate them to humans, you can take them out and cuddle with them

my SO has an 8ft red tailed boa, and when we take her out for baths, I snuggle with her in my undies

Watching them feed is fucking rad - it's like National Geographic in our living room once a month

My roommate had put a sock on the heating brick (because snakes don't like lying on rocks or anything ಠ_ಠ). There was a short in the wiring and the sock caught on fire, which combusted some of the other stuff we had in the cage for him.

I like to pre-kill the mice for my kingsnake because he doesn't wrap them up long enough to kill them, and will eat them while they are still alive. I just take them by the tail and whack their head on the tile floor hard enough to knock them out good. It's arguably no more inhumane than letting the snake kill it, and it's safer for the snake.

nah, she definitely gets "hungry" - her behavior changes significantly when she's hungry than not - but even then she just ignores the rat if it just lays there

one of her eyes was damaged by a dog before we got her, so I think she has trouble distinguishing unless it's moving (and when it's knocked out, it doesn't move)

yes, I have done this in the past, but my snake is big now, and I fed him rates a few times but I am too afraid that the rat will hurt the snake because they do gnaw at him, so I just feed him regular mice still. He kills them within seconds and then eats them.

Mine only jumped at me if it was hungry and I poke my finger at her face like it was food. Some people don't realise that snakes have terrible sight (afaik, they only see heat) and could jump at a food-sized finger if they are hungry. Mine always let go straight away when it realised it was me. Also it told me I should go get some food from the freezer for her.

I've only heard of one snake that was fussy about it, and I've personally taken care of five snakes and worked with others who feed their pet snakes that way.

And no, they don't start to stink, at least not the way we did it. We'd usually thaw them by moving them from the freezer to the refrigerator, keeping them in a plastic bag, then they'd just need to sit out for maybe an hour or two on feeding day.

EDIT: I should probably mention this was at different nature centers, so the refrigerators were specifically for animal food. :P

depending on how big it is and how hot your country is, the food will thaw at different times.

Small food goes bad FAST. If I left a baby rat out for my snake and by morning if he didn't eat it.. it stinks really bad. I guess if you've gotta a massive anaconda and are feeding it rabbits, then it's not so bad, but even in a cold country (mine - Ireland for example.. it's 50F right now) it would go bad in less than 1 day.

Snakes know this. You obviously haven't worked with snakes very much if you don't know how fussy they can be about food. Go to any snake forum or pet shop and you will see people constantly asking why their snake won't eat their food.

Wouldn't it depend on how hot the area you're keeping the snake is? It doesn't matter if it's 50F outside- if your house is 70F it'll thaw at that rate.

Small food does go bad more quickly, but like I said in another comment, it's not just sitting out on the counter for days. Move it from the freezer to the fridge to thaw a bit, if it's not completely thawed by feeding day, let it sit out for an hour or so, then give it to the snake. It shouldn't be bad by then. Also, I've been thawing mice this way for raptors too, and they've never gone bad.

The fussiest snake I ever met was one who had to have its mouse cut up into "bite size" pieces and put in its water dish or it wouldn't touch them.

Well yeah... You are nit-picking, but same concept. If you are leaving it out to defrost, it'll most likely be at room temperature. If you move it to the fridge for 2-3 days, it should be fine. Room temperature and you've got a disgusting smelling room.

I had to cut off beaks and claws off chicks before my snake would touch it... I did it while frozen to reduce mess, but that's why I fed mostly mice.

I prefer feeding it live mice, my snake just ignores it if it frozen, and honestly I don't see a difference. My snakes prefers it, it's less hassle for me to just pick up one every week, it's called a feeder mouse for a reason.

If your snake won't eat a mouse that's already dead, then of course you'd get live ones. :P (You didn't actually give the mouse to the snake while it was still frozen, did you? I've heard of people doing that and wondering why their snake wouldn't touch it. :') Then they'd thaw it out and it'd work just fine.)

I personally think it's less of a hassle to keep a bag of them in the freezer, having to buy them maybe once a month or less, than going to the store every week. (Unless the snake won't eat already dead stuff, obviously)

No I don't, I have tried frozen mice after thawing them multiple times, I have killed live mice after buying them, he just prefers eating them live, he doesn't want to touch dead ones, so I just feed him live feeder mice, I never feed him rats anymore for risk of them biting him.

Yes, especially small rodent like animals, it's fucking nature, I don't torture the animal before feeding it to the snake, it dies just as it would in the wild.

The really only time I get upset about animals being killed, is if the animals are treated poorly, or if it is a whale or a gorilla being killed. I think the poacher should be put life in jail for killing a gorilla.

yes rats have a far more vicious nature than snakes. They start attacking my snake before the snake even knows whats going on, then the snake gets pissed off and kills it. Thats why I feed the snake mice now still, No possible way a small mouse can harm my snake Henry

Yes but they tend to be a bit more docile than rats and their teeth are much smaller, Henry is 3 foot long ball python

From my experiences the mice tend to cower in the corner, and the snake has time to do whatever it feels like.

Rats tend to go right for the snake, sniffing and gnawing it, forcing the snake to either attack or if it isn't ready it will roll up in a ball and I have to take the rat out.

I don't feed it rats anymore.

EDIT: I'm not saying the snake is evil for killing a bird. I'm saying it's disgusting that this guy is making those girls feel bad for not taking off their shirts by having a snake kill a bird in front of them. Honestly there are thousands of things in this world far more disgusting and horrible than this. If you think this is disgusting why don't you go research some different serial killers and how fucking fucked up their lives are and the horrible things they did to their victims. not in a ton of countries.

It's illegal to feed your snake live food in Ireland. I know that in some US states it is allowed. Snakes can be fussy and some will only take live food, although it's a bad idea because it can also teach your snake to be more vicious.

Also a peck from a bird can hurt the snake. (depending how old the bird is obv).
