If a hedgehog smells, it's the owner's fault. Some hedgehogs get dirty and need bathing, some don't.

Not really, hedgehogs have the nasty habit of finding smelly things, mixing them with saliva and rubbing it all over them selfs. The smellier the better.

It's a natural behavior for them which some owners don't like so they start bathing their hedgehogs excessively. If your hedgehog doesn't stink, you're not giving it a chance to indulge in it's natural tendencies. (I don't think it's bad for the hedgehog though if they don't get a chance to stink, I'm guessing it's just a mechanism for hiding their scent in the wild)

It's called annointing. It's a personal defense mechanism. They find caustic substances to "poison" their spines and make predators (or your hands) wish they never made contact. Wait until they turn into a quivering ball of spikes.

        I got mine from a Teacher on Craigslist. The hedgehogs she had in her classroom had babies and I paid about $100 for Pookie and the cage for her.

        Seriously, one of the best pets I have ever owned. Cage doesn't smell. Eats cat food (Preferably None Fatty) and usually takes a week to get through one bowl of it. If you get one, I would recommend a Chinchilla wheel for its cage. It's easier for it to run on and is pretty quiet.

        You can find people willing to adopt them out on Craigslist- that's how we got ours. Please do a lot of research before just going to get one. You need to make sure you have the proper bedding, wheel, etc. Great pet for kids, though.

        If you want to get a hedge hog it is very important to do all your research. They're not the most exciting pets, if they weren't so damn cute it wouldn't be worth it at all.

        I got mine from a breeder and did a bunch of research beforehand in all sorts of places; breeders, forums, books etc. No one mentioned that

        a) they poop a bunch and you have to clean it every morning

        b) they are grumpy and pretty much indifferent to you

        c) they are much harder to read than a cat or a dog and you can never tell if they're sick, bored, boring... except for the quality of their poop

        They live 4-6 years and if you want any chance of getting a healthy and happy hog you should probably go to a breeder who treats them right from birth instead of someones reject which has likely been neglected and has little chance of ever warming up to you... They can also have health problems so breeders with guarantee's are the best bet..

        I love my hedge hog but I suggest getting a dog or cat if you're ready to make a pet commitment....

        **not a great pet for kids, it's boring and most of your interaction with it is cleaning up after it which kids are rarely happy to do. My boyfriend's 8 year old brother was VERY excited that we were getting one and while he still gets excited when he is going to see the hedge hog he's usually pretty quickly bored.

        This is a horrible idea. Craigslist is full of idiots breeding animals to make money, and they don't give a tinker's damn about anything but money.

        I don't think any small animal is a great pet for a child, and no animal should be dependent on a child for its well-being. If you're not willing to take care of the animal yourself, don't get it.

            Time and patience. Hold the hedgehog in a blanket on your lap for 1-2 hours each day. The trust of a hedgehog has to be earned. No loud noises, no sudden movements. Reading or watching TV make good activities for hedgehog bonding.

            Depends on what you want in a pet.

            My hedgehog sleeps, eats, and shits. She's still young though, so I guess that's to be expected.

            But you don't really play with them. They're not like cats and dogs in that sense. All hedgehogs have different personalities, so it kind of depends on your hedgehog, but I can hold my pretty easily, but then she just chills. Sometimes she tries to get away, sometimes she doesn't. I can put her in my lap and she'll hide.

            It's kind of awesome though. They are cute, and they are awesome. But if you're looking for a pet that will come up to you looking for affection... don't get a hedgehog.
