The fact that it is larger than our planet makes it all the more impressive.

For comparison:

(ignore crappy paint photo-shopping. it is to scale though)

[–]Shiggityx2 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Terrifying. Whenever I see this kind of scale, I wonder if there is a planet with solid ground out there the size of Jupiter (or larger), that supports life that grow to match. We very well could be viewed as mites trapped on a speck of dust to some intelligence out there...

[–]Alphaeno 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, the larger the planet the more gravity it has. So most creatures on that planet will be low to the ground and have very powerful bones/muscles. However, size of the planet doesn't play the main role as you can tell from dinosaurs on this planet. I think the main difference back then was temperature was higher.

[–]gunshard 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, evidence points towards higher oxygen levels are the cause of increased size in prehistoric creatures, not temperature. [1] [2]

[–]Alphaeno 0 points1 point ago

Ah, you're right. Thanks for clearing that up!

[–]Shiggityx2 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm...yes that does make sense. I don't know about biology or organic chemistry to begin understand the limits of life as we know it, but as you point out dinosaurs existed on this planet, as do blue whales etc. It doesn't seem implausible that an intelligent, land-dwelling creature the size of the dinosaurs or even much larger could exist somewhere (planet-size apparently not being a main factor).

[–]eternauta3k 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think surface gravity doesn't depend on planet size but rather density.

But maybe you already know that and there's a correlation between size and density.

[–]andrihb 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but solid planets are likely to be made mostly of iron and nickel like earth yea? so very strong correlation between size and weight for rocky planets.

[–]eternauta3k 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so very strong correlation between size and weight for rocky planets

Density, not weight. Nevertheless I was wrong, since mass goes like r3 while gravity decreases like 1/r2, so surface gravity does depend on the radius.

[–]andrihb 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but an animal's weight increases exponentially with size, it's hard to imagine animals that are much larger than earth animals living on a planet with many times more gravity..

It's the great red spot on Jupiter. A huge hurricane 3x the size of earth that's been going for hundreds of years.

[–]darthluke 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And which has absorbed smaller, but still relatively large, storms which come near it. Latest of which being the smaller red spot.

[–]badavila20 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

doesn't the smaller storms it absorbs change the color of the overall red spot storm?

[–]disconcision 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

fascinatingly, no. almost all vortices on jupiter are white, but a few of the very largest are red. we don't actually know why; but almost certainly it is because they dredge up some of their contents from deeper down in jupiter's atmosphere. storms growing above a certain size have the tendency to 'go red', notably recently Oval BA, which formed from three smaller white vortices over 1998-2000 and persists to this day.

the atmosphere of jupiter is incredibly fascinating; alien and complex, but in many ways much simpler than earth's. likewise for the atmosphere of the sun.

[–]badavila20 -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

maybe because it has absorbed other storms it's gained more power and is able to pull up whatever is below even the soil maybe?

[–]eternauta3k 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jupiter has soil?

[–]stevieraykatz[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well, in a sense, yes. there's no solid surface of jupiter until you get to the dense core: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jupiter_interior.png

however, dust particles of silica based compounds are abundant in this gas giant's atmosphere, which could constitute soil, aside from the fact that it's always "airborne".

[–]idarkiswordi 5 points6 points ago

This actually looks like a cropped edit of the sharpened version I did of Bjorn Jonsson's Voyager mosaic. Quite an impressive mosaic in either regard.

[–]stevieraykatz[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i did some research earlier today to see which bird we got this shot from. I don't think it was Voyager since it's resolution was severely limited in comparison to this shot. I don't think that the images Voyager captured in its 1980's fly-by could be enhanced to this caliber.

[–]idarkiswordi 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I 100% will guarantee this was stitched together from about 30-40 Voyager images. I have the raw files sitting on a hard drive in fact.

This is also not to mention that the Unmannedspaceflight forum is made up of mostly professionals in the field of space sciences.

[–]stevieraykatz[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well awesome job on the mosaic then. this truly is a remarkable image.

[–]idarkiswordi 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I deserve very little credit. Bjorn is the one who put in probably 20+ hours to create this fantastic mosaic. I just enhanced the color, performed a noise/detail redux and reposted it. It is important to note that the GRS would look much more washed out than this in person and would likely appear to have a fuzzy haze hanging above it were you ever able to be in close enough orbit around Jupiter. So even as much detail as I was able to introduce to the image, it is far from realistic. Nonetheless, I still find it amazing, being over 30 years old, the Voyager probes have only narrowly been surpassed in terms of visible image quality.

[–]ijontichy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any link to an image of Jupiter showing what it would look like to human eyes? I wondering just how washed out it would look.

[–]idarkiswordi 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually yeah, in my first post above, Bjorn attempted a psuedo-realistic coloring of the photo. It is quite close in terms of color for what you would see at the edge of Jupiter.

However, as Voyager was passing closely to Jupiter, primary science overtook public outreach in priority and rather than being a orange/green/blue image (primary imaging filters on the imager), it was an alternating set of images using the orange and violet filters which do represent a wide spectrum, but not really what the human eye perceives. So, to better correct the images, he modified the photo to represent a best interpretation possible through histogram adjustment. With the end resulting image, the color is relatively accurate (for the most part), but your eyes would not see that exact scene because you cannot see as deep into the spectrum as the violet filter allowed and you can certainly see lower than the orange filter passed, but it would also not be strangely different looking.

Edit: Thought I'd also mention that I've been working on redoing the mosaic on and off for a while now. These were acquired with the Narrow Angle Camera (zoomed in) and only captured orange and violet as I mentioned. However, the Wide Angle Camera was capturing orange/green/blue at the same time. Color placement wouldn't be greatly accurate but I intend to do an overlay for better color. No idea when I will be done but if you are interested, I'll send you a note when I am.

[–]ijontichy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recognized it immediately, but I have a friend to whom I sent the link (didn't mention which reddit it was from) who is very bright, possibly brighter than I am, who didn't recognize it.

Whereas I tend to emotionally agree with you - it's pretty recognizable - I don't think those that don't recognize it are due ridicule. It's entirely possible to be smart and not happen to have the flash of intuition as to what it is.

[–]BeefPieSoup 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A flash of intuition? Hardly required to recognise one of the most recognisable features of the solar system, in a subreddit where you might expect pictures of such things on a fairly regular basis.

[–]GAMEchief -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In this subreddit, I expected to see pictures of things beyond our solar system. My first thought was that it was something beyond our solar system, which is why I had a hard time figuring out what it was. Had I known it was inside our solar system, I would have figured it out instantly, but that thought didn't cross my mind.

[–]BeefPieSoup -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps it should have.

EDIT: Come on guys, really? The dude is trying to claim he would have known all along, if someone had just given him a hint, because r/space is apparently "just for things beyond our solar system". What kind of an idiot does he take me (and all of you) for?

When you're an idiot, either admit it, or shut up about it. Don't bitch at me for calling you an idiot.

[–]Popeye_needs_spinach 0 points1 point ago

[–]bkanber -2 points-1 points ago

[–]tyrghast 5 points6 points ago

[–]OompaOrangeFace 1 point2 points ago

[–]aidrocsid 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not being able to recognize Jupiter is like not being able to recognize Earth. It's our neighborhood, you should get acquainted.

[–]BeefPieSoup 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had assumed that most people who were interested in space would have learned about the planets in primary school, and would at least know what Jupiter looks like.

[–]GAMEchief -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what you get for assuming, I guess.

I mean, if it said, "Look at one of the planets in our solar system," I would have known instantly. But all I knew about the picture was that it existed somewhere in the universe. My first thought was that it was one of those radiation scans or some other measurement that had been color-coded.

[–]BeefPieSoup -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You lack common sense/the ability to think for yourself. Hardly OP's fault.

[–]GAMEchief -2 points-1 points ago

[–]BeefPieSoup -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your comment was a complaint about how the post was labelled. Or so I thought - perhaps I misunderstood?

I'm not trolling, I genuinely would like you to stop bitching. I really don't see how this relates to my 'social skills'.

[–]GAMEchief -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your comment was a complaint about how the post was labelled.

It wasn't, at all.

I really don't see how this relates to my 'social skills'.

"I know something you don't know, therefore you don't have 'the ability to think for yourself.'" is shitty social skills. That is pretty objective.

The all around mixture of arrogance and insults based on, at best, a misinterpretation of someone else's comments - how is that not an example of shitty social skills?

[–]BeefPieSoup -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What was your post, then, if it was not a complaint? Enlighten me, genius.

I said that you couldn't think for yourself because you said you "would have known instantly" but only if given the significant hint that the title was "Look at one of the planets in our solar system". I'm not extrapolating anything here, I am replying to what you actually said.

Again, my social skills are kinda off topic here. It's the internet - you can only respond to the comment someone actually made, if I "misinterpreted it", it's your fault for not being clear enough, not mine for "not having social skills". Don't try to blame me for your inadequacy.

Whatever, just STFU and deal with my downvoting wrath.
