The next generation of great philosophers will have boiled away the need for language to convey their most fundamental questions, and reduced all their inquisition down to a vague feeling of confusion mixed with both awe and cynicism.

The outcome will be a resurgence in British comedy.

It can also work quite well if gear 1 has full teeth, gear 2 has teeth only on the middle third of its width, and gear 3 has teeth on the two outer thirds of its width... this allows gear 2 to slip right between the teeth of gear 3, while both are affected by gear 1.

[–]MontegoBarbados 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bingo. That was my first thought as well. I figured that the cogs are different colors to represent topography. That's probably too thinking too deep for a poster, though.

[–]dx_xb 42 points43 points ago

[–]alexchally 1 point2 points ago

He probably used the standard involute gear generator/library in Solidworks. You give it a few parameters and it shits out a gear. Quite useful actually.

[–]Zosoer 1 point2 points ago

Right, it only works if you add another dimension (depth) to his original two dimensional image. He had a valid point but nice try whiz

[–]Vantar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What part of the original image shows that it is meant to be interpreted as a 2D object and not interpreted as an orthographic view of a 3D object?

[–]robac2938 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always wondered why everyone thinks that gears have to be either two dimensional or all on the same plane.

[–]jmnmaui 208 points209 points ago

Northern Rail have the same logo, only their version is glued together, set in concrete, and doesn't give a fuck. If it ever arrives onto the poster. It also smells of feet. And has people falling out of it whenever the doors open. Help. Can't. Stretch. Analogy. Further.

if only someone had ever invented a way to make that plain in a 2D format... like... i dunno... perspective? and if their sizes and perspective have been forced to look puzzlingly conflicted, you still have drop shadow to fall back to.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's possible that this is a stock image of a timepiece, in which case the three gears aren't on the same plane

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm pretty sure there's no way the right gear and bottom gear aren't overlapping, which would mean they are offset.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The bottom left gear doesn't touch the upper gear, it works. This is done to conserve space inside the gearbox. To the eye it looks first as if all the gears touch, they don't.

[–]nuxo 21 points22 points ago

Or perhaps he was and knew a thing or two about how well cities work together.

No but you wouldn't really want to look at an ad drawn by an engineer.

Oh, sorry, that was me. I've been attaching all the objects in my house to copper wires that are connected to earth. Since... you know... I guess I'll just stop now.

This isn't too bad, at my high school we had a mural in the engineering wing that had gears that didn't even fit together.

Compaq made the exact same mistake with a magazine advertisement back in the 90s. I think they even used actual metal parts, which should've made it obvious they wouldn't turn.

Eventually they realized they messed up and fixed it by separating two of the gears in a new version of the ad.

Whenever I see a parkour video I just imagine how horrible it must be for the legs, and can't help but to think what the damage on their body will be like when those free runners get older.

That is the new "green gear box" that is about to be approved by the FIA and introduced in the 2014 F1 season.

Or, conversely, this wasn't designed by anyone who isn't a moron. Engineers don't have a monopoly on intelligence, despite what most of them think (well, the students, at least).

Or... they know exactly what they're talking about. Example: San Francisco Muni.

Initially I noticed that the teeth aren't involute curves (spur gear). Most people don't realize that gear teeth have a special shape. Then I realized that they wouldn't be able to transmit power.

This is why kids need legos. Playing with the gear pieces taught me what little I know about machines

I don't know if you have ever seen engineers work, but from the projects I have worked on in the past, I can say I wouldn't be surprised if an engineer actually did design that.
