Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I don't get it. They were found not guilty? But they were clearly beating up a suspect?

I get that the suspect was doing wrong. I fully understand that the suspect should have been found guilty of endangerment, assaulting an officer, etc.. Everything the suspect did was wrong and he should be punished for it.

But the cops beating him up as he lay motionless in a ditch is also wrong. How are they not guilty?

As a redditor who lives in Birmingham. Yeah, probably. Also just shitty cops.

To be fair, the federal jury that aquitted the two cops wasn't full of shitty cops.

It was full of people who live in or near Birmingham.

Shitty cops is mostly whats here in Alabama. I can remember in high school a when a buddy of mine's girlfriend broke into his truck and threw all his shit out in the parking lot. We went and talked to a cop we had met before and he let my buddy ride in the front of the cop car and told me to keep up while we did 60 mph through town to her house. The cop then proceeded to cuss out the father and the daughter. Needless to say he wasn't a cop for too many years.

Had a friend who was a cop down at UA. He enforced the laws, such as speeding through campus on officials. A law is a law! They fired him.

As a redditor in Australia I find this disturbing. If that happened here there would be an outrage.

I really think that a big part of this is due to a lack of training. In a lot of current police training, "adrenaline management" is taught.

When you're in the middle of a high-speed chase and your adrenaline is pumping, your body is shaking and ready for "fight or flight". When the situation abruptly comes to an stop, very often your body keeps on going for a minute to bad situations.

I'm not making excuses for these bad cops, but there could be other factors that lead to this situation.

You know, I'm not even surprised that they started beating an unconscious guy. Like you said, adrenaline, he was fleeing arrest, endangering...whatever.

I just can't believe that they were acquitted. Anybody can do something stupid and evil in the heat of the moment, but twelve jurors watched that video tape, and didn't see anything wrong with it. That's what scares me.

[–]ampersandrec 8 points9 points ago*

I'm not making excuses for these bad cops, but there could be other factors that lead to this situation.

Actually, that's exactly what you're doing. Not judging whether it's a valid excuse or not, but that is an excuse.

edit: this is more explanation than excuse, but I think it's not the sharpest line between the two. you have a good point though. carry on.

[–]bleatingherd 17 points18 points ago

He is trying to explain the cause of the behavior so that it can be corrected. Could it be used as an excuse? Sure, but that isn't the point of the post.

[–]pandemic1444 1 point2 points ago

[–]yer_momma 20 points21 points ago

Here in the south we call that a D.W.B. Driving While Black... in my town when you see a car pulled over and there are 2 or 3 cop cars behind it, instead of just 1, you can be near 100% sure it's a black driver.

Now if I (white) get pulled over, with a tail light out, drunk, and drugs sitting on my lap, i'll probably get a fix-it ticket for the tail light.

[–]Sir_Scrotum 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can confirm this. I live in a small town north of Ft. Worth, TX. I have lived here 7 years and I have only seen cars/SUV's pulled over by the side of the road with multiple cop cars 3 times. Every single time there were black occupants. Any other time there is always just one cop car per car pulled over. No blacks live in this town.

When the sun sets, and the dusk stretches out across the dusty downtown streets, if you listen just right you can hear the faint ghostly whisper of scurrying feet running for the edge of town when there was a black shanty town on the other side of the tracks. Now they all live in slums outlying Ft. Worth. Hellvua country.

You are surprised they were acquitted, you should read more true stories about police in america.

In this case the answer, as it often is, is to claim "We need more money for training." Because without training, how would police know not to give a 12 man strong severe beat down to a possibly dead man laying on the grass after being thrown from a car following a high speed crash? Obviously without specialized training, no one would have any idea that that was not the best possible caring response.

I get the anger and all that that some ppl have commented, saying good for the cops. But when you're a cop, you're suppose to put all that personal shit aside and act according to the law. That's why cops are suppose to be the respected 'authority figure' because they are suppose to be representatives of THE LAW. Otherwise, they're just thugs protected by the law.

[–]bestbiff 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's quite the double standard. You can't do anything even suggestively aggressive towards a cop, in the eyes of the law you're going down. Hard. Cops lose their shit and abuse their position of lawful authority and they get away with it. If you get extra punished for messing with a cop, how come cops who commit crimes don't get dealt extra punishment for abusing their power?

[–]morpheousmarty 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll give you a real answer. Cops are on the inside and over time they system will always favor them as they will get input on almost every change that effects them, and will be familiar with all the players making the decisions.

Lets say originally they had a death penalty for police violence, naturally cops would demand exceptions for situations when the cop's life was in danger. Latter we would give the the right to be violent in cases where civilians might be harmed.

Slowly but surely cops get more and more leeway, until eventually a full loophole appears. Resisting arrest is the most common one, a cop can basically kill you and get away with it under that one, but there's always another one forming on the horizon.

Every group seeks out its own interests and power, and we are always at a disadvantage on the outside. That is why cops abusing their power is less of a crime than a civilian abusing a cop.

Exactly! I hate people that don't admit a double standard. Okay, this criminal probably deserved a beating, but what about when my family/friends are actually hurt/raped/killed by a criminal. Am I allowed to beat the shit out of them? No, I go to jail or the case gets tarnished by my actions. I have to wait for "justice" to be served (maybe), while these cops get the right to do what they want without any consequences.

You can't fight city hall, this is why I despise government.

Did this guy deserve to be punished for what he did? Absolutely. He was a fucktard and he almost killed a cop and should be put in solitary confinement (because in GP he would be a hero) every day for the rest of his natural life (is everyone's sarcasm meter off? This is an exaggeration). But did he deserved to get punched in the head while unconscious and probably injured? No. This is not valid use of force and the cops deserved punishment for the way that they acted.

[–]hardcorr 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Extended solitary confinement (rest of his life? really?) is probably the worst thing I can think of that you can do to someone. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, regardless of what they did. It's not a light matter, at all, and I wish people would take it more seriously.

[–]LearnToWalk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who cares who he almost killed? I don't. Police are not better than anyone else and that shouldn't matter. In fact police should take certain dangers into account at their job so it should matter less.

For what he did? The police were trying to engage in a false arrest. False arrest is illegal and the supreme court and federal courts have ruled on multiple occasions that you have a right to use all necessary force, including deadly force, to resist false arrest. Let me make this very clear. You are legally within your rights to kill cops if that's what it takes to stop a false arrest. He didn't try to kill cops, he tried to get away from a false arrest, which was his constitutional right as upheld by the courts.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

“Citizens may resist unlawful arrest to the point of taking an arresting officer's life if necessary.” Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. This premise was upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529. The Court stated: “Where the officer is killed in the course of the disorder which naturally accompanies an attempted arrest that is resisted, the law looks with very different eyes upon the transaction, when the officer had the right to make the arrest, from what it does if the officer had no right. What may be murder in the first case might be nothing more than manslaughter in the other, or the facts might show that no offense had been committed.”

“An arrest made with a defective warrant, or one issued without affidavit, or one that fails to allege a crime is within jurisdiction, and one who is being arrested, may resist arrest and break away. lf the arresting officer is killed by one who is so resisting, the killing will be no more than an involuntary manslaughter.” Housh v. People, 75 111. 491; reaffirmed and quoted in State v. Leach, 7 Conn. 452; State v. Gleason, 32 Kan. 245; Ballard v. State, 43 Ohio 349; State v Rousseau, 241 P. 2d 447; State v. Spaulding, 34 Minn. 3621.

“When a person, being without fault, is in a place where he has a right to be, is violently assaulted, he may, without retreating, repel by force, and if, in the reasonable exercise of his right of self defense, his assailant is killed, he is justified.” Runyan v. State, 57 Ind. 80; Miller v. State, 74 Ind. 1.

“These principles apply as well to an officer attempting to make an arrest, who abuses his authority and transcends the bounds thereof by the use of unnecessary force and violence, as they do to a private individual who unlawfully uses such force and violence.” Jones v. State, 26 Tex. App. I; Beaverts v. State, 4 Tex. App. 1 75; Skidmore v. State, 43 Tex. 93, 903.

“An illegal arrest is an assault and battery. The person so attempted to be restrained of his liberty has the same right to use force in defending himself as he would in repelling any other assault and battery.” (State v. Robinson, 145 ME. 77, 72 ATL. 260).

“Each person has the right to resist an unlawful arrest. In such a case, the person attempting the arrest stands in the position of a wrongdoer and may be resisted by the use of force, as in self- defense.” (State v. Mobley, 240 N.C. 476, 83 S.E. 2d 100).

“One may come to the aid of another being unlawfully arrested, just as he may where one is being assaulted, molested, raped or kidnapped. Thus it is not an offense to liberate one from the unlawful custody of an officer, even though he may have submitted to such custody, without resistance.” (Adams v. State, 121 Ga. 16, 48 S.E. 910).

“Story affirmed the right of self-defense by persons held illegally. In his own writings, he had admitted that ‘a situation could arise in which the checks-and-balances principle ceased to work and the various branches of government concurred in a gross usurpation.’ There would be no usual remedy by changing the law or passing an amendment to the Constitution, should the oppressed party be a minority. Story concluded, ‘If there be any remedy at all ... it is a remedy never provided for by human institutions.’ That was the ‘ultimate right of all human beings in extreme cases to resist oppression, and to apply force against ruinous injustice.’” (From Mutiny on the Amistad by Howard Jones, Oxford University Press, 1987, an account of the reading of the decision in the case by Justice Joseph Story of the Supreme Court.

This gif is technically out of context, there was a long chase prior to this scene. They beat the shit out of him for running over the leg of a cop....who ran in front of the van to drop a spike strip.

Such a shame that they were all cleared. Occurred about and hour away from my house.

[–]sanph 13 points14 points ago

no, the van turned towards him on purpose. He was well out of the way of the front of the oncoming van while laying the spike strip. The guy in the van chose attempted homicide of a police officer rather than letting his tires get popped.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe he did. I haven't seen the video. Maybe he just wanted to get out of the way of the spike strip. (If it was dropped.) Maybe he didn't care if a cop lived or died. Maybe he wanted to kill him.

Regardless, the law, and the duty of a cop, is the same. You know what some people do? They kill people. They don't try, they kill people. Does that entitle a cop to answer a 911 call of a reported killing and come over and start beating the shit out of some people? If you get shot by a suspect, and it's obvious he has no further capability of shooting you or harming you afterwards, (say, he was knocked unconscious like in the .gif) you don't kill him, you arrest him and get to a hospital.

Always the duty of a cop is the same. Otherwise, they're just protected thugs. If we wanted people to beat the shit out of people who do us wrong, we could do that ourselves.

They could have seriously injured him or killed him. Theres a reason you don't move people after an accident without checking them first. There could be an injury to his spine or elsewhere which they could have aggravated.

This is not understandable, nor is it okay.

wow are you serious? ""We need to put it in perspective," Oh, okay so because the criminal tried to injure cops and was a danger to pretty much everyone, and hit a guy -

IT means its TOTALLY fine and professional, that they swarm his motionless ass and beat his face in.

Thats TOTALLY fine!

And nobody sees anything wrong with that? What the fuck ...

For the love of Christ people, STOP JUDGING ALL OFFICERS BY THESE JACKASSES.

If you are in a department that doesn't train you properly, keep up to date with CALEA standards, or just plain keep your ass in line, then yeah, you'd see this kind of stuff happen. This department shows that it is clearly ran by people who became cops because they knew someone most likely. Not to mention that the race issue is clearly one that isn't helping it look any better.

As a soon to be officer, I'd much rather inform people that it's not all officers that do bad things, though I'll be the first to say these hot heads went way too far. Officers (humans really) are more inclined to be total fuck heads when their asses aren't being rode by their superiors. We get it, officers are supposed to be held to a higher standard, I understand that. But please don't round up all of them and label them as villains when there are some like me who just want to help.

That is all.

Cops don't have to follow the law. They are rarely prosecuted, let alone found guilty for crimes they have obviously committed. And tax payers get to foot their legal bills, settlements, and damages to boot!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

In this case, it's because a racist jury found the officers not guilty. You have no one to blame here other than your fellow countrymen.

Cops are people. People are retards who more often then not react solely on emotion. Cops are supposed to be above it, that's what they are paid for, they rarely are. I would have been surprised if they would've all carefully approached the suspect and made sure not to move him. I honestly have never had a positive experience with a cop. Power corrupts, plain and simple.

[–]FoxifiedNutjob 1 point2 points ago

One simple question, that people should be asking themselves - "When cops break the law why don't they go to jail? Or even get suspended or fired?" When you answer that question honestly, you know what kind of place you live in and you're the only one at fault for not taking appropriate action to separate yourself from that system.

I feel like some people here are forgetting that police officers are also human. They are responsible for protecting civilians and their rights, yes, but just like us, they are prone to wild, uncontrollable emotional outbursts.

The man running from the police had either killed or nearly killed an officer, and possibly harmed others. Now, just for a moment, imagine you are one of the cops that was harmed. You've gone to work with him many times before. You share jokes in the office, tell each other stories about family, etc. You've spent years of time with the other cops on the force, and you eventually grow a real sense of who they are, what they're like, etc.

Now imagine your friend was just side swiped and had his car flipped over. Imagine that, upon seeing the car turn, you think to yourself "oh god, Jimmy's dead". Suddenly, beyond your control, your fly into a rage and you can think of nothing else but getting back at hurting someone who injured someone very near and dear to you.

I'm not trying to defend the cops or their actions. I'm not saying the suspect deserved to be brutalized in the manner he was. I'm trying to show you that the officers involved didn't plan ahead of time they were going to beat the suspect mercilessly once he pulled over. I'm trying to paint a picture that says everybody's human, everybody makes mistakes.

Unfortunately for the police they made a very big mistake. But can you really blame them?

[–]linearcore 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you are in a position of ultimate authority, which police are most of the time, then you need to be above the emotional reactions. You don't get to make that mistake and keep your job. Sure, they are human. But not all humans will have that reaction. The ones that do, need to be removed from a position of ultimate authority. They are not above the law, no matter what they think, and if they break it, like they did here, then they need to be subject to it, or else we cannot trust them ever again.

This is why I consider the police a gang. They are the biggest gang on the block. They have to earn our trust and respect, and they aren't doing it. Most of the time, they do their job. But when it comes time to prove that they can be trusted by punishing their own, they don't. And that is when they destroy their own image.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most of you probably would have done the same thing if somebody just tried to kill your best friend. Cops are human. They have emotions too. What they did was wrong, but it does not make all cops pieces of shit.

So fucking what? If I did that shit, I would go to jail for a long time. These officers get a free pass. They are not above the law. The sense of superiority I see from police and their family SICKENS me. We are all human and subject to the same laws. As long the police are not held to that standard, I will not treat them as Human; they are fleshy garbage, wasting square footage, and I will treat them as such.

I'm not going to downvote you, I'm just going to inform you of what a retard you are.

[–]Aisar 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cops aren't people. They don't go to jail when they murder people.

I refuse to treat cops like people as long as they aren't held to the same standards are people.

[–]Rasassination 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And people go to jail when they beat somebody who does not pose a threat to them, no matter how angry they are.

[–]Rucser 2 points3 points ago

agreed. cops have shot unarmed men in cold blood for much less than this incident.

example: the young man in Oakland who was cuffed, lying submissive, detained on the floor of a BART station, when a cop pulls out his gun and shoots him in the back, killing him in front of a train car of witnesses.

why? how can one human being do such a thing? how can we continue to employ murderers and thugs to serve as our "protectors" when many of them are no better than the violent thugs they're supposedly protecting us from.

a violent criminal cop should be prosecuted to a GREATER extent than a common civilian, because the public's trust is being absolutely violated!

the general public is dehumanized to the point where we are all viewed as potential suspects. your mom, your little sister, your uncle, your brother.. ALL potential terrorists. ALL to be eyed with suspicion and mistrust. no wonder so many cops overreact and end up killing unarmed civilians due to their inability to cope with the FEAR their training ingrains within their minds.

[–]huxley2112 1 point2 points ago

The fact that these cops were acquitted of any wrong doing shows how fucked up the justice system is. These guys all should've lost their jobs. A cop that can not keep his/her emotions in check is very dangerous to themselves and the public. That is really all this comes down to, public safety, which is being blatantly ignored by the justice system that let these cops off.

You cannot seriously be implying that someone who runs from the police, drives recklessly on a freeway endangering lives of innocent people, is deserved of mercy and compassion?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, he is.

Especially "running from the police." Is this supposed to be some sort of serious offense? Yes, I know that according to our nation, we must bend to their every whim, but that doesn't make him suddenly lose his status as a human being.

People who endanger others are arrested. The police are not a band of thugs hired to victimize those who victimize us. If a criminal is tortured, it's no different than torturing an innocent person.

[–]lucullus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This kinda of thing makes me sick. The cops that struck that person when they were already incapacitated need to be fired and charged with assault. Even if they get fired I bet they get off on the charges. There is no excuse for striking a person that you have control of.

[–]rowjims 3 points4 points ago

[–]xteneritasx 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't matter. Cops are supposed to be paid to separate emotion from action and do the right thing. That's why we let them walk around with guns? Does it happen sometimes that they get angry and want to kick the shit out of somebody? Absolutely. But I get angry about it every time because the public gives them the powers that they have because we trust them NOT to do shit like this. They are not normal people when they have on a uniform. They should be held to a higher standard of morals and behavior, not a lower one.

[–]9babydill 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recently came to an understanding why police do what they do. They deal with the lowest form of society on a daily basis, plus all cops are human beings. We hate, we fear thing, we make mistakes, men easily take physical action in situations, etc. I condemn what these cops did but I know why they did it.
