I love and buy actual books AND I own and love a Kindle

WHAT NOW?

I enjoy the feel and smell of real books, I can and do spend hours in book stores. Buying books is a wonderful and enjoyable ritual for me. I also like being able to carrying around a thin, light, small device containing hundreds of books.

Oh, I also love vinyl and have a huge collection...while also loving MP3s and owning iPods and whatnot.

Life isn't as black and white as comments on the internet make it seem.

I am a very avid reader, and my Kindle is the only way I can keep unread books around since it is so easy to purchase them without leaving my house. I live far from town, so I no longer have to wait to purchase a book I want. This is especially important in the winter when the roads are bad! Also, there are lots of great Indie authors out there I would have missed were it not for eBooks!

I prefer paper books. I like having a collection, I like holding an actual book, I like that I don't have to worry about carrying around an expensive piece of equipment.

On the other hand, I can understand why people would find e-readers more convenient.

[–]cuphandle 19 points20 points ago

My collection outgrew my house. eReader's cheaper than a new house.

[–]Warpedme 1 point2 points ago

Exactly my problem! I reclaimed a foot of space on 2-3 walls in 4 rooms of my condo.

Mind you, it is pretty damn convenient to be able to buy new books anywhere I can get a cell signal or wi-fi.

[–]rap3point0 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are more fragile, but it is faster and easier to download a book than to go to a store. Not to mention they can be several dollars cheaper.

[–]poo-poo 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think we're missing the important part of cost. It's much cheaper to replace an e-reader than a large collection of books. That's the benefit of digital to me.

[–]Prazzie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With regards to the fragility issue, I just want to mention that I've damaged more books than ereaders. I've had my Kindle for years and it's with me 24/7 (in a vinyl splash-proof cover). I've taken it to the beach, the pool, the bath, the kitchen and everywhere inbetween, without damaging it. I'm not saying they're not fragile, but when discussing ereaders and books, people tend to forget that dried wood pulp is not exactly indestructible.

[–]MeloJelo 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, I got my e-reader on sale for like $80. It's pretty sturdy, too. I've dropped it and stuffed it into bags with no problems so far, though I'm sure it wouldn't hold up to a good punting like a book would.

[–]Diligent_Nose 1 point2 points ago

E-readers do more than hold books. PDFs, instapaper, and web-browsing (with the latest kindle) - they do a lot more than you'd think. I challenge any reddit reader to subscribe to /truereddit, and use instapaper with a kindle for a week. Then try to switch back.

Book hipster. Best part about an e-reader is how much cheaper books are for it. And I don't mean pirating - if you pirate books there is a special place in hell for you.

[–]artman 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You bring up an interesting point as far as "pirating". I am an avid science fiction reader, and my tastes go toward the obscure and there are authors whose older books are rare or non existent in print format. I have luckily found and downloaded these digitally via other means and I am happy I did. Beforehand, I had to trek from one used bookstore to another or surf numerous and sometimes nefarious dealers to obtain them - a sometimes expensive and time wasting experience.

I have and always will purchase new author's digital books though.

Yeah save the trees. Burn oil to run server farms. E-readers aren't exactly eco-friendly, they are made with many toxic things you wouldn't want in your water/food. That being said, I have one and a rather sizable paper book library.

[–]Daemonicus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is that not better than using oil and toxic chemicals to use in equipment that cuts down and processes those trees, and how about the printing process for the books?

Google is using green energy for their server farms btw. And in the long run, if you ever need to replace a book. You can do so without any additional waste, unlike a hard copy book.

How do you think they manufacture electronics? Trust me lots of chemicals. Then when you are finished how often do you recycle your electronics devices? I know I don't ever unless it one of those cell phone recycle bins.

Google is (as far as I know) only running a few green server farms. One in Oregon and the other in Finland. And even these farms are only getting partial power from hydro electric sources. The rest run on regular old energy sources (as far as we know, Google doesn't like to comment much unless on them to keep them safe.) Computers can run on green power all they want. But there are many chemicals used in their production.

Paper books and e-reader both have up sides and down sides.

It's a good start and better than nothing. Doesn't change the fact that both options (books/e-reader) produce environmental challenges.

[–]greengeekgirl -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, and in a couple of years when your e-reader is obsolete, you can toss it in a landfill and buy a new one, because that's so eco-friendly.

Meanwhile, I will continue re-reading my paper books without the danger of them becoming obsolete--if I get tired of them, I can sell them to a used bookstore or donate them to a library. Man, that is so wasteful of trees, re-using them like that.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would it be obsolete? Maybe if you picked the wrong one or are the kind of idiot who bought an iPad to read books. I bought one and I only plan on replacing it when it shits the bed entirely, which will likely be many years from now.

[–]artman 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True. I bought a bare bones eReader (no color or wi-fi) that had what I needed (multiple file formats). It is also pretty indestructible. The brand I bought is coming out with new ones and though I like what I have, I would like color or wi-fi down the road. Also, as with old computers, if I upgrade I usually donate or recycle, as with all the electronic/tech stuff along the way.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Color currently means you have to get an LCD screen. This means crap battery life + glare. Wi-fi is completely pointless IMO. It take a couple of seconds to download a book and put it on your reader via a cable.

[–]poo-poo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly though, I am glad my kindle has 3G. There have been a few times where I finished a book while travelling and I just got the next one right then and there.

Of course, if I didn't have 3G I would just plan ahead.

[–]Warpedme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By crap battery life you mean 12+ hours of strait use and often 24+ hours on dedicated color e-readers. Mind you, my nook does have about a week of battery life even after owning it since the day they were released but I just wanted to put "crap battery life" into perspective.

The main reason to have an e-ink e-reader is the fact that it is exactly like paper in the regard that you can sit in direct sunlight and read it just fine. Which is why I went with an android tablet for my color needs and kept my Nook for outdoorsey reading.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, that is what I mean by crap battery life. And the 12 - 24 hours is exaggerated to say the least.

[–]Warpedme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It totally depends on the device. My Galaxy Tablet gets 12 hours minimum, as long as I'm not playing a game on it. I think the color Nooks get more but I know there are others that get far less.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, batteries have come a long way.

[–]greengeekgirl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the whole point, though--a book won't "shit the bed entirely" until it literally falls apart, which can take decades, if not centuries, depending on how it's used. There will be a time when the current generation of e-reader won't be compatible with the new software because the technology will outpace the hardware. And that will probably be a lot sooner than decades. :)

[–]rottinguy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can donate my e-reader too......

[–]greengeekgirl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obsolescence doesn't mean "outdated," it means the technology is no longer useful. In which case, it would go to a landfill or, in a best-case scenario, be recycled.

What I think of when I see "e-reader"

[–]omnilynx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd rather own a book, but for books I don't want to own, it would be nice to just carry around an e-reader. Unfortunately, there isn't currently a "rent" or "borrow" scheme for e-readers, which means I have to stick to books.

[–]capnpetch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love books. I don't love the space that they take up. I can't even count the number of books that I had to donate to the library for lack of space to keep them. Now, I will never have that problem again and won't find myself looking for a book to re-read that was tossed out years ago.

[–]SpecterXs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously, this post makes no sense. Books printed on paper are just needlessly cut down trees.

[–]Bomb-20 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can't stand how so many people, who've never even tried an eReader pass it of as some sort of heresy, scoffing and proclaiming "I love books. The feel of them, the smell of them..." Honestly, perhaps sometime when you're not too distracted by the smell of that fucking mangled paperback you'll realize that it's the content that matters.

I don't even own one, but that's just because I don't. I'm not vehemently opposed to the mere idea of it. Actually, I was looking at my cousin's Kindle the other day and it had a super convenient reading light on it. That alone almost sold me on it.

Why ~I~ bought an E-Reader, and cannot use books:

I haven't been able to read a book in years due to my tic disorder. I simply twitch too often, and lose my place or lose my page. When it takes me 5 minutes to read a page, it just becomes frustrating and not an enjoyable experience. I bought an E-Reader a month ago, and I've read more in the last month than I have in the last 4 years because of it.

(Oh, and on a side note, you're right, House of Leaves would be terrible on an E-Reader. I do own a physical copy of that book.)

[–]cohrt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]newredditsucks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you throw your book copy against the wall because it's such a pain in the ass to read, you can pick it back up again and start where you left off.

When you throw your e-reader against the wall for the same reason, you're out $100 or so.

[–]cohrt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that didn't answer my question.

[–]newredditsucks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess not. :) House of Leaves is a horror story told through a number of interlocking stories that are described in a couple of straight-ahead narratives, chapter-long footnotes, appendices, and other oddities.

While it might work quite well as an app, it would be quite difficult to fit it into a standard beginning-to-end ebook format.

Here's wikipedia's entry for it.

[–]Greensticky 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Please don't make assumptions; I have House of Leaves on a kindle (as well as a physical copy), and its awesome. It has links throughout the book to the different footnotes and other oddities, and is basically the same as the physical copy, but way more convenient to read, as I can go read the footnote, then click the link to go back to where I was before, without using 8 physical bookmarks.

[–]lemtrees 0 points1 point ago

People are downvoting you because your reasons are infantile and fallacious.

[–]Scorp63 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  1. You being fallacious - Example 1 - Lmao

  2. You being fallacious - Example 2 - Generalizing, etc

  3. You being fallacious - Example 3 -Either/Or

  4. You being fallacious - Example 4 - Insulting

I was stating my own opinion for several of those, in case the ~I~, constant referral to I wasn't obvious enough bud. This isn't a debate, this is me expressing my opinion. Grow up, and don't major in philosophy. If you are human, you are fallacious.

[–]Daemonicus -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your rebuttal is fallacious as well.

For you to take 4 statements out of context doesn't help refute the reason why people are downvoting you.

  1. Not fallacious at all, it's an alternative view on the situation. Everything I stated in that list is true.

  2. Not a generalization at all, if you look at the comment I was responding to, I was explaining why that person's point about animal intelligence is fallacious.

  3. Not at all fallacious since it's an opinion based on observable outcomes.

  4. Yes insulting. But it's not fallacious. I wasn't insulting him to prove him wrong on a specific point (which would be fallacious). If you actually look at his earlier comment you would see why I said that.

And just fyi... Opinions can be fallacious. Just because it's an opinion, doesn't mean it can't be wrong. Just because this isn't a formal debate doesn't mean it's okay for you to get away with spewing falsehoods.

[–]Scorp63 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too stupid; didn't read

I don't bother proving points with fallacies, because I've never agreed with them. Please quit wasting your time honey-sugar.

[–]Scorp63 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too stupid; didn't bother refuting

I don't bother proving points with fallacies (even though yes, each of those were fallacies of yours, insulting is one, in case you didn't know) because I've never agreed with them. Please quit wasting your time honey-sugar.

[–]Daemonicus -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're awfully angry for someone that was proved wrong. It's a shame really, cause all I did was answer your question as to why people were downvoting you.

Then you tried to pull a Capt. Detective to snake out some out of context comments to fail at saying they were fallacious so my statement here is fallacious... Which is irony at its best.

Also, insulting isn't a fallacy. Ad hominem is (is an attempt to link the truth of a claim to a negative characteristic or belief of the person advocating it). So merely insulting someone is not fallacious unless you try to connect it so it refutes a claim they made. Which is something I didn't do. But nice try.

These are all pretty good reasons, but they could easily be contrasted. That would be boring, so I'll just say that the only difference that can't be contrasted is that in the event of losing all of your books or house, you can buy a new ereader for $100 and have all of your books back.

what you are calling "just data" took several hundred hours for someone to write. It isn't "just data" its the hard work of the author too.

[–]Scorp63 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because you're paying for just data? It doesn't matter if it took "several hundred hours" to write. You're paying for raw data, not an actual book, for almost the same price. Your point isn't really related to what I stated.

Everything else you say is spot on though.

No, but you can with the PC you use to organise them... Surely no one -just- keeps them on the e-reader? How would you ensure all the meta data is exactly how you want it for a start?

Which leads me to another massive advantage of e-books over paper, you can, at a click, sort it or drill down by author, publisher, edition etc.

You can't do that with dead trees.

Before Amazon started selling Kindle that is what the Sony development team did to me when I told them they have bugs in the software of the PRS.
