Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

What Jew thinking?! Steal the wallet!

I would steal it, then return it a few days later. Hitler is grateful and buys me a beer, we become best pals. After he became the chancelor he makes me an important part of the government. I prevent genocide.

Remember, he's pretty convincing, so plan accordingly, no matter how tempting it is to join him in his reign of terror.

Steal it. Just for shits and giggles. Maybe I could do with 40 riboflavens or whatever the currency is.

[–]DeusExMachinae 3 points4 points ago

I am going to start a country that uses riboflavens as currency.

If the Universe is deterministic, and Hitler is destined to become what he was, then actions have no moral weight. If it isn't then Hitler is not yet morally evil himself and therefore it would be wrong to steal his wallet.

I think it is better not to steal the wallet but to shit in it and leave it where it was!

No. Stealing Hitlers wallet under those circumstances is just adding more misery to the world.
While Hitler in retrospect certainly isn't one we feel that much sympathy for as he is becoming one of the most destructive forces in human history we shouldn't forget that kindness should be the norm at any given point.
The question also asumes deterministic properties. Life does not work like that and moral and ethical questions cannot be asked on those premises. Unless you think Hitler would become a better person by having his evening ruined then you shouldn't do stuff to others you don't want to happen to yourself.
Personally I would imagine Hitler that very evening deciding upon the holocaust instead of the plan to deport all the jews to Madagascar (a different "final solution" that was on the table at one point or another). He decided that the only solution when it comes to people is to kill all the "bad ones". You can't even trust them not to steal your wallet.
Thanx for the holocaust all you wallet stealing redditors!

That's only about $148, when converted to USD at the time (about $8) and adjusted for inflation.

Am I ethically? No. Would I? Yes. Is it unethical? Probably. Do I give a fuck? No.

I want to take that class, seems easy.

A class where the teacher doesn't know the difference between 'effect' and 'affect' is not one I want to take.

I came here to find the affect vs effect comment. Surprised it was this far down. I'd rather be morally unethical than bad at writing.

The question is: are you a time traveller that knows about the events to come? Do you know about WWII/The Holocaust?

If you do NOT have this information, then it's clearly unethical to steal his wallet.

The question isn't "would you," but "are you ethically obligated to." Clearly one is not ethically obligated to do so...

That said, I'd yoink that dirty cash like a BOSS.

[–]otoren 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Since the only thing that it does is mildly punish Hitler, there is not ethical obligation to do anything. It doesn't save anyone or prevent anything.

So...no.

"This theft will not effect Hitler's rise to power..."

An important question, then, would be: would the lack of theft effect his rise to power? If so, you're morally obligated to steal it (and thus prevent his subsequent rise and atrocities).

Of course, that's impossible to determine given how the question is stated. Also probably a typo, but that's how I'd answer, because I'm a smart-ass.

[–]phelyan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not morally obligated and I would probably not dare after his rise to Chancellor, so any time after 30 Jan '33.

It's about £134 in today's money (considering historical exchange rates and buying power), so, yeah, I'd do it to piss him off.

It's difficult to imagine oneself in any position with Hitler. It's easier to imagine if Hitler were a totally hot woman. Then I think I'd imagine this position.

From there, I'd surely be physically able to steal her wallet. But am I ethically obligated to steal her wallet? Clearly the answer is no. We must think about the answer from two perspectives: ethical and practical. Ethically, either by utilitarian or deontological reasoning, stealing Hitler's wallet while in such a position would be the wrong thing to do. However, we must also consider the practical scenario. If I, staring at Hitler's perky breasts as I plug away at her from above, I'd surely be so distracted as to have the possibility of stealing her wallet not even cross my mind. It would be like imagining what sort of bologna to have on my cheese sandwich while Emma Watson was deep-throating your He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. Furthermore, I presume that she wouldn't be wearing pants.

Often, we get so caught up in imaginary scenarios in vain attempts to come to terms with ethical obligations that we neglect to contextualize. If we set enough conditions in thought experiments, we can derive just about any conclusion we wish. A tricky problem to consider the next time you're slam-hounding a hot chick who reminds you of Hitler.
