What are the balloons used for?

Barrage balloons were designed to tangle or damage low-flying bombers with the steel cables they were anchored with. They were also effective against the V-1 Flying Bomb and served as morale boosters for British citizens during the Blitz.

thank you for the reply.

-were they not easy as funk for the enemy to shoot down though?

I would imagine they were rather easy to destroy. I don't know if enemy pilots bothered to shoot them down. They were actually quite dangerous when they came untethered; one was accidentally let loose in London and destroyed several chimneys.

I can't imagine I'd want a reinforced balloon with steel cable falling on me after being shot/burst or getting loose anywhere close :S

Just slightly surprised they were used as an asset rather than a massive liability :)

Looking at that picture, and countless others, I am reminded that my grandfather only survived D-Day because his LCT struck a mine and had to go back to sea and fix their doors. He went from being +15 to +90. Here is a list of my grandfathers infantry unit and a list of soldiers KIA during WWII

To put an exclamation point on what I have said; the 29th division suffered 928 casualties from June 6-8th, of them the 116th infantry accounted for 797 of them. source

Did anyone else think those were bombs falling at first glance?

You look at that photo and think of all of the logistics and diplomacy that it took to pull that off and you realize that Ike was quite brilliant.
