Well I was talking in hyperbole, but yes. It's much easier to say "god did it" than "over the course of millions and millions of years, a natural paradigm known colloquially of 'survival of the fittest' produced the ecosystem that you see around you". (Still, there is no god. haha)

Dude, that would be an amazing game. Wouldn't really work with SC2, it would go against the game's idea. But another RTS game, call it "Evolution" where every once in a while a unit is spawned with a mutation will be in your army, like say longer arms but less damage, or slower but heavier, changed vision, random mutations will occur. And according to it's dominance (I don't know maybe kill cont / w/l ratio of person using it) more and more of these will start spawning. And a database keeps all these so they affect everyone in the multiplayer. Eventually after like a year of RL time, the game and all its units are different from originally... This would be fucking GOTY idea right here.

the only way this would work is if you had procedurally generated units. that is, units that a computer could generate.

meaning, you couldn't ever have units that are out-of-the-box, like reapers or collossi or things like that. you'd have to manually program in all possible quirks before-hand, or parts of quirks that could combine to make bigger quirks. all new units would be modified versions of old units and basically be boring units.

well the issue about that is that in SC2, units do not adapt. strategies do, but you wouldn't start seeing things like zealots growing longer arms to deal with stimmed marines, which is pretty much a requirement for all the components to finally reach equilibrium. as is, you'd just end up seeing SC2 devolve into terrans vs protoss, with the zerg becoming map critters and doodads. :P

but even though the strategies adapt there are changes made to unit costs, damage, armour, etc. Maybe they make the zealot charge just a little bit better if they constantly get beaten out by marines with stims.

I'm pretty sure they do this already to try and make a more balanced game. Not so much based on overall wins, but probably something a little more controlled than that. I mean, evolution isn't just about killing and surviving, you got to pass those genes on as well and that, is a whole nother balls game.

well my point is its not easy to compare a system like SC2 to a natural system because there is zero variation outside of the players :P

however, if the game was based on genetic algorithms...

If you were going for balance for all races, you'd have to be a bit more nuanced than just applying GA to both races. If you selected solely for advantageous traits,eventually one race would gain dominance and completely overpower the other just by virtue of hitting a bigger local maximum.

Consider that in reality, very rarely do two species occupy the same niche in the same environment. Generally, when that happens, one of the species will die out.

In SC2, both races are trying to occupy exactly the same niche, so you can't just say hey, genetic algorithms ftw!
