Do they have these about other races/nationalities too? I'm suspecting that one of my friends is a black man but I want to be sure.

I'd think the spikey hair, androgynous features, and twenty foot sword would be a tip-off.

I like how they pretend the Chinese look like Americans/Europeans but the Japanese are some completely different animal.

Technically there's truth to that. Japan was extremely isolationist throughout its pre-WW2 history, while China has a lot of genetic diversity.

[–]recreational 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The isolationist period only lasted around three hundred years, which won't be enough time for any significant genetic drift. Go back before the 6th-7th century or so and there isn't really anything even remotely like a Japanese nation; mostly native Ainu with larger groups of Han Chinese, Koreans, Polynesians and other migrant groups.

"Watch out for sleeve guns and other comic strip gadgets...The Japs are experts at such stuff"

I'm just imagining a POW sneaking in a joy buzzer in his crotch and then totally fooling the guard when he shakes his hand! Classic!

All the stuff on the top left is a pitiful transliteration of Chinese though ... Hard to explain but here is 'What do you want?' and if you listen to it it's clear that it's Chinese.

It is, because this is a handbook for US soldiers/pilots operating in China. They teach them some very basic Chinese so they can get help when they're shot down/lost.

To be fair, checking the toes for signs of calluses from wearing geta is quite clever, although it wouldn't apply any more.

[–]SgtFish -1 points0 points ago

And from what I've experienced, Japanese people do have some pretty terrible English.

Although, nowadays, I think that stems from how they romanize words into katakana.

I'm not sure it's all accurate. I know some of it is. I'd think it was the best they could do at the time (you know, "military intelligence" and all that).

Probably the most effective thing they had going for them was to differentiate by their cultural idiosyncrasies. Every culture has its own idiosyncrasies. Consider how a German indicated the number 3 with their hand versus the British. If you are a spy in Germany, you'll want to know details like that. Or, if you are trying to out a German spy, you would watch out for those types of idiosyncrasies.

If you were a spy in Germany in the forties, you'd want to make sure all the little details from accent, to body language, to the way you count money, etc are consistent with the area you are in to avoid suspicion.

[–]wilkeson 15 points16 points ago

none of that list is racist. it's a collection of common genetic and cultural traits for (what was at the time) a very homogeneous population.

buck teeth is a genetic trait.

different cultures walk in slightly different ways. if you're around a large population of chinese people, you'll notice that most of them scrape their heels when they walk.

the closest that list comes to racism is

watch out for sleeve guns and other comic strip gadgets... the japs are experts at such stuff

cue shock; telling soldiers to watch out for POWs with concealed weapons. the horror.

[–]Airtech77 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way people walk are a key identifier of culture and race. For instance it is very hard to tell Caucasians apart but if you look the way they walk there are marked differences. The Russians walk with their hips while Americans use their legs.

[–]kannibal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So is this walking style genetic of learned. I am confused. How do Americans of Russian origin walk? Like Americans I suppose?

[–]Airtech77 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is probably learned.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The eyes thing is correct IME, the build thing seems right and the feet thing sounds plausible enough. Like I said, overall, for the 40s, it doesn't seem so bad.

How is using culture and genetic identifiers to locate your enemy racist? Seriously? First thing first Japanese is not a race.......

[–]_Tyler_Durden_ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is why this pamphlet is racist, because they treat the Japanese as if they were one.

[–]Airtech77 17 points18 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you know that Russians and Americans walk differently. I bet you didn't know that Italians and British people have different skin tones did you. These are all people of the Caucasian race btw. Also I bet you didn't know that Italians tend to talk with hands a lot compared to Germans. Or that Americans tend to be taller then Greeks. Is this racism? Is comparing general cultural and genetic traits among the various sub groups that reside in a specific race of people racist? If it is then the entire field of anthropology better be arrested for publishing hate crimes lol.

[–]kannibal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TIL When Russians migrate to America they begin to walk differently

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's pretty clear that those are just indicators. You focus on them, but the pamphlet only focuses on other stuff (as per the summary).

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...and Iraq having "weapons of mass destruction" is somehow an improvement upon this "how to spot a Jap" guide as far as military "intelligence" is concerned?

[–]mrhorrible 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the post. Very interesting.

And besides the obvious racism, I found my self wondering just how accurate it really was. Is that really true about the wider toes due to traditional sandal wearing? I realize the practice may no longer be normal, but was there an element of truth to it at the time?

I guess I'm just saying that this pamphlet has sparked an honest curiosity about the ways people from different places differ physically.

[–]wheresmyhouse 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not certain about the toes. What I can tell you, having spent two years living in Japan, is that it's not hard to spot an Asian foreigner, unless they're Korean. Koreans look almost identical to Japanese.

[–]aliveorlife 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Useful given the context of US forces trying to help keep China Chinese, at least when the nationals were in power. Read some history. And a comic would be better off giving actual pointers on what makes japs look jap because there are definitely differences.

[–]Dovecote -2 points-1 points ago

Why is 90 percent of this thread unironically praising and agreeing with this cartoonishly racist comic depicting asian people as buck-toothed, lurching, fiendishly cunning, hissing animals?

Love the weird romanization of the Chinese sayings on the first panel.

Edit For posterity (Downvoted? Seriously? Screw you people)

  • Who are you? - Ni shi shei 你是谁?
  • What do you want? -- Ni yao shenme 你要什么?
  • Bring some drinking water -- Na (?Kai?) Shui lai 那水来
  • Bring some food -- Na fan lai 那饭来
  • Too many to spend the 15 minutes

[–]Mr_International 0 points1 point ago
