I saw this happen in real life! The bear was about that same size, my black lab is a svelt and athletic 70lbs. My dog and I were out camping in the snow and touring around, snowboarding the high peaks. Upon returning to camp one afternoon my dog got on the scent of something near camp and went exploring. Soon I notice him run down into the meadow where the snow melt water was running and had melted out a large bit of snow. Baby bear was exploring the meadow. My dog cornered the bear and was trying to play with it. The snow wall was about 6 feet high at this point and the bear was trying, desperately, to jump out but could barely get his paws near the top. I stepped towards my bag to grab my camera but instantly thought "OH SHIT, where's mamma bear?" And turned around, calling my dog off and ran the other way. I see bears alot and am generally not afraid of them, but getting in between a momma and a cub is something entirely different and that potential scared the hell out of me. Never saw momma bear. Got to watch the little bear run up a hillside and onto a ridge line, bathed in the afternoon light it was a spectacular sight!

TL;DR Small bears are scared of larger animals.

And I wish I had! But had I went for the camera and taken a pic then gotten mauled by Momma bear, I'd have been a contender in the Darwin Awards, something I've vowed to try my hardest not to be in the running for.

You were lucky. They say that in this case momma bear would've beat the shit out of you and your dog if she would've caught you, literally beat the shit out. -_-

I do not know much about bears, but the only thing I know about them for sure: you see a bear cub in the wild - get the fuck out as fast as you can.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0S4JxnU_Y8 - it's from this video. Those fuckers are traumatizing the animal. It's fucking amusement show in Japan.

Oh wait those are animals and we are kings of nature - so it's OK.

Shit, now I feel bad =/

[–]Rutagur 8 points9 points ago

I felt better at the end of the video. When they show the bear's no longer afraid of the lion cub and monkey.

[–]Just_Jerk 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, but I think that monkey is afraid of him. Why would people do such things when there is no need? They are doing it only for their amusement.

[–]Rutagur 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not trying to defend it but aren't monkies supposed to be afraid of bears? If they were wild I mean...

[–]Dstizzle 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also not trying to defend it, but shouldn't EVERYTHING be afraid of bears, they are bears after all

[–]Ragark 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were introducing it to new animals so it can co-habitat with them without freaking the fuck out in a sanctuary.

[–]retrospects 2 points3 points ago

Think about how that bear cub felt...

[–]bonesingyr 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a repost, but I think someone in the original had mentioned that this bear was domesticated early on and they wanted to release it in the wild.

They were introducing it to different animals so it could get used to it in the wild. if they released it as it were; it would probably just die because it didn't know how to take care of itself.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So they chose...a fucking lion? An animal that a bear would never encounter in its natural habitat?

[–]Corrosive23 4 points5 points ago

Bears and lions coexists in north america.

[–]JakeCameraAction 1 point2 points ago

[–]Wakasaki_Rocky 4 points5 points ago

I'm no animal psychologist, but that just looks like the absolute wrong way to introduce two animals. Also, it looks like its a game show.

[–]deconistor 2 points3 points ago

And would be unsafe to have in a zoo if it freaked out like that every time it was near an unfamiliar animal.

[–]Daemonicus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would make sense... I was thinking they were just trying to domesticate it by exposing it to different animals for socialization.

[–]roviuser 9 points10 points ago

The YouTube vido is shortened and without translation the entire meaning is lost. They were in no way torturing or traumatizing the animal. It is a very common practice with zoos all over the world to train young animals to co-habitate. Naturally, the bear is scared initially, but it is no different than a cat throwing a fit when you get a dog. It later learns to co-habitate and enjoy it's new friend. The full program showed much more of this. The video you linked is out of context propaganda.

[–]Jukepot -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um... so it's okay they're terrifying a bear cub, because it's just going into a cage for the rest of its life anyways?

Not particularly reassuring.

[–]roviuser 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, they're teaching it to be comfortable with other animals so that they can share environments that are larger than confinement cages.

[–]Jukepot -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You mean... larger confinement cages?

[–]roviuser 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I mean reserves and sanctuaries. You can look at it like a large confinement cage, but in reality, by partitioning off land and wilderness for the animals, they are protecting them from poachers, deforestation, and other harm.

Edit: Link

[–]The_narrator101 0 points1 point ago

Thats a little sensational. The bear eventually got used to lion cubs and started playing with them which was the goal. If there was any real danger the zookeepers probably wouldnt have put bear cub with the lion cubs. Its sad to see the bear cub flipping out but traumatizing the little guy wasnt their intention.
