Beginner japanese speaker here. Thanks for that, I have a question though. How does the tsu (つ) end up being an 'h'?

ありがとう! (...right? Would simply どうも be more appropriate/common here?)

[–]mochamocha 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a small tsu (i.e. in さっぽろ)

[–]wacco 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm used to a font where the small tsu is really smaller, here it's about the size of the a which is throwing me off, I guess. Nevertheless I still don't get it. Aren't those supposed to always come before other syllables (in your example -ppo-)? How does that work here?

[–]mochamocha 22 points23 points ago

Sometimes a small tsu at the end of an utterance is used to indicate a glottal stop, commonly seen in manga... See sokuon.

The "a" is also smaller.

[–]Nendai -1 points0 points ago

This is a good point. The small ぁ also signifies that it is connected to the previous character in the way that よ、や、ゆ are used. In this case it makes it Baa, instead of Ba-a (slight pronunciation difference).

The way I think of it, whenever there's a small っ at the end of a phrase/onomatopoeia, I see it as an exclamation point (!)

I believe my Japanese teacher called it a: Chisai Tsu

[–]flamingspinach_ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

chiisai, not chisai. And that just means "small tsu". A more proper term is 小書き「つ」, which means minuscule 'tsu'. It's often also called a 促音, which is the name of the sound it makes (gemination or glottal stop).

[–]Craysh -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I knew what it meant, but I forgot the second 'i' >.>

[–]MrAndersom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Almost, add an extra i in there for chiisai. 小さい「つ」As you can see from the kanji, it means small tsu. My teacher in high school would say that as well.

A small tsu would be followed by a character. It could'nt stand alone at the end. It's a normal sized tsu. Edit: I stand corrected!

don't split hairs when you don't know, just stick to ありがとう as it's probably fine in all situations. go to Japan and find out from listening to real people. it could be used differently regionally for all I know.

っ does not in any way become 'h'.

ばぁっ could be Romanized as something like "Baa!", and the "ah" is to indicate the correct vowel to English readers because English has crazy phonetics.

[–]humpolec 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to wikipedia, っ at the end does the exact opposite of what you said:

The sokuon is also used at the end of a sentence, to indicate a glottal stop (a sharp or cut-off articulation), which may indicate angry or surprised speech.

You probably meant ー, which repeats/lengthens the vowel like you said.

As for "ah", I'm not a native English speaker either, but I believe it's just how the "a" sound is written in English; a simple "a" could be read differently, closer to "eh".

あります and います is not that black-and-white. Don't get in the mindset that one is only for animate things and the other for inanimate things. There are a ton of exceptions to this rule of thumb, both in terms of subject/vocabulary, and grammar.

Also, it's ばぁっ, not ばあつ, indicating a glottal stop.

[–]malenkydroog18 0 points1 point ago

I don't...why would she say that? Some sort of double-entendre, I know. The first meaning is actual chocolate milk, I guess, as a child. The second is...semen? Do people refer to semen as chocolate milk? If so, did the aforementioned chocolate milk refer to being molested as a child? And why is this "chocolate milk" going through her nose? Did someone ejaculate into her nostril? Did she chortle while fellating? I want to understand.

Wow. It's amazing how sexually openminded japanese seem to have been at least since late Edo period. Not being influenced by any book religion is such a blessing..

[–]GiantSwan 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Before you get too far in your praise of their supposed atheism, you should check out some of the crazy shit Japanese have done in the name of non-"book" religion as well. While there wasn't the prudish aversion to sex in general that we get with certain strands of western religions, there was plenty of other craziness, like the attempted purge of buddhism and the religious aspects of the justification for WWII. Although based in a new notion of "traditional" culture that was invented in the Meiji era, rather than in religion, Patriarchal attempts to control women's sexuality were pretty common as well.

Also, one historical piece of artwork might not really reflect the general milieu of the times. It's possible that this image was the goatse of its time, passed around for humor/shock value and little else. I'm not enough of an art historian to really say, and the wiki doesn't really discuss its reception at the time. Having sexy pictures doesn't mean the society was more open, just that at least one subgroup was.

That goes for a lot of the "Japan is so crazy" stuff on the internet - people take things from extreme subcultures and assume that they represent the general population. It's not really "Japan" per se that's so weird, but rather some people in Japan, and there are analogous weirdos in the US and Europe as well (I'm thinking the creators of horse porn and bmezine just for starters here). The internet likes weird, so the weird gets blown way out of proportion and comes to stand in for the whole country.

[–]DeepDuh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You certainly have a point there. I've always regarded the nationalist period in JP as not being representative for Japanese culture. Maybe my view of the Edo period is too romantic but those two cultures just don't match up for me.

[–]GiantSwan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, it's a big disconnect, but you can't go dismissing whole time periods just because they don't sit right with you. Good or bad, culture is in constant flux and no one part is more valid or pure, just more or less popular at a given time.

More than that, the romanticization of the edo period was actually a major part of constructing the chauvinistic ideology of the more nationalist times. The two are intimately linked. That romantic view of samurai culture and village life was created during the attempt to instill a sense of national identity in an archipelago that formerly had little sense of being a contiguous whole. Even the book that outlined bushido as we think of it today was written in mid Meiji. While he certainly located a valid set of ideals, other historians have questioned whether or not the guidelines were actually practiced.

[–]GiantSwan 5 points6 points ago*

It looks like he's in a taruburo (tarufuro? I'm not sure on the exact reading), or barrel bath, at a low end Japanese onsen (hotspring) or sentou (public bath). Here's a google image search of some classier ones. I say low end because the barrel looks to be plastic or metal, and it's fed with what looks like a garden hose, as opposed to the rustic wood and iron look of more expensive places. Either way, a man in a tiny barrel is a pretty common sight at those establishments. If you can get over the idea of having group bathing as a common part of life, it's not so weird.

At the sentous I've been to, barrel baths tend to be extremely hot, I figure the smaller size makes it easier to heat the water to higher temperatures than the larger rotenburo. So, that guy’s expression could either be a "Holy shit this is hot!" (the steam might support that interpretation) or he's just making a goofy face because his friends are taking a picture of him in the bath. I mean, people fuck around with cameras regardless of nationality.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny fucking story, I was browsing through a local Kinokuniya one time (for those unfamiliar with it, it's basically a Japanese Boarders/Barns & Noble) and they had a manga that had a similar panel-strip and punchline that also came with a mask with palm shaped chunks of skin missing off the face. I bought it to freak out my sister with it, but then some douchebag came up and half jokingly offered me to trade the manga and mask for his Michael Buble CD, Back to the Future DVD, and a mystery bag. I knew I was being duped but I was feeling adventurous so I figured "fuck it" and went ahead with the trade.

I got home and sure enough both the CD and the DVD were actually present and in new condition in their cases. Didn't get ripped off there. Opened up the bag, a couple of push-pop candies and a fucking smart-phone in mint condition. This was creepy as fuck. I checked the recent/missed/received/dialed-out call log and it was all empty. Not a single text message either.

I was freaked out but I also didn't know what to do with the phone so I held on to it, waiting to see if someone calls. Few days later, I got a video message. It was the same fucking douchebag talking about how I should keep watching. He puts the freaky mask on that I bought with the manga. View shifts to show what's going on. He's pounding my sister. Michael Buble is playing in the background. He's feeding her push-pop candy....and another guy is pounding her from behind at the same time. My sister is being DPed by this fucker and some other asshole. Camera moves around again, and it's my goddamn dad giving it to her from the back as she straddles both dicks at the same time. Somehow I realize I have a boner while all of this is going on. Then I wake up and turns out my wife was blowing me while I was asleep. I pop in a Micheal Buble CD and pound my wife with my eyes closed. I like continuity and consistency when it comes to my sex.
