I'm less averse to the seaweed and more worried at the thought of stepping on a stingray, then getting a tail lash to the calf. I mean, I know you can warn them off with a shuffling motion when you move, but still...

When I visit Cayman, we usually dive with some of the same people, so we get bored of the popular dive sites almost as fast as they do. To change things up, a divemaster once took me out to "the big blue" as he called it.

Cayman has beautifully clear waters, and severe dropoffs for the sea floor. So what we did was head towards and edge, out over it, and kept going until all around us was nothing but blue. Lighter up top, darker (but seemingly bottomless) beneath us, with no visual reference points to tell us which way we came from, and barely enough reference points to even tell whether we were ascending or descending while we just tried to swim in place.

Yeah. It's a little bit scary just feeling like you're hovering over the edge of eternity.

I was on a dive with a guy who had been bragging the entire way out to the dive site about how advanced a diver he was. This was my first dive.

The dive was a 90 ft dive on a 300ft wall (you go down 90 ft, and there's another 200 ft below you. You just hold position).

He ended up having a panic attack and having to be escorted to the surface by a dive master.. He was much more humble after that.

Incidentally, this was the same dive trip that one of our very very hot dive masters flashed us when she was removing her wetsuit. Overall, I'd say it was a good dive :P

Back when I was a kid, nobody had a proper warning system in place. And the hospital staff was apparently a bit bamboozled at first too, since jellyfish warnings wasn't a norm back then.

I'm from Southern California, and I surfed in high school and such, but mostly Huntington and Newport Beach (body surfed). People would talk about how awesome San Onofre was all the time, like it was this legendary beach with great waves and a cool place to hang out.

Finally we took a trip down there (part of Junior Lifeguards) and lo and behold, filled to the brim with seaweeds, seaweed arms, rotting seaweed on the beach, with pebbles for sand and gnats for wind.

Worst beach ever.

Its not rincon, its sands in front of isla vista. This picture is not the Op's, its actually a buddys. It was a beautiful day, with a 280 degree NW swell that got past the islands. I wonder how the op got this pic....
