It really has...but I remember hearing the news about Steve Irwin...I'm Australian and was still in high school and was messing round with mates when someone mentioned it. A bunch of people (met included) called bullshit cause we thought there's no way he would've died. As the day progressed though the reality dawned on us.

When I visited Australia in 2006, I got to visit this man's zoo. It was an amazing experience and I got to see him as he was riding around on his dirtbike with his toddler son in his lap with a helmet. He stopped to say hi to us as we were getting on the trolly that goes around the zoo and cracked some jokes: I play wheelchair basketball and we were all in chairs. He asked us if the crocs got our legs. He's a good man. Never thought someone could be so 100% driven for animals.

I have a pic of him on the dirtbike somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. http://imgur.com/WFTCV

And here is me playing: I'm on the right http://i.imgur.com/KcZjg.jpg

This is probably the celebrity death that most effected my emotions. I LOVED the Crocodile hunter. Dressed like him for Halloween and everything. Used to watch his show all the time, even his sub-par movie. Sad to see him gone.

[–]flea_17 18 points19 points ago

From Wiki:

In the weeks following Irwin's death, at least ten stingrays were found dead and mutilated, with their tails cut off, on the beaches of Queensland, prompting speculation that they had been killed by fans of Irwin as an act of revenge. Michael Hornby, a friend of the late naturalist and executive director of Irwin's Wildlife Warrior fund, condemned any revenge killings. "We just want to make it very clear that we will not accept and not stand for anyone who's taken a form of retribution. That's the last thing Steve would want," he said.

[–]Dereliction 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also:

Dan Mathews, vice-president of the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said it was "no shock at all that Steve Irwin should die provoking a dangerous animal." He added that "Irwin made his career out of antagonising frightened wild animals, that's a very dangerous message to send to children." He also made a comparison with another well known conservationist: "If you compare [Irwin] with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star."

Anyone elses' blood boil over that?

[–]taliesinsmuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For once, I agree with PETA - as a conservation biology lecturer I agree entirely. I was deeply annoyed by Irwin's approach to conservation - many naturalists have made successful TV shows, documentaries and zoos without the antagonistic approach to the wild animals.

The point at which I wrote him off as having absolutely no right to speak on environmental issues was when he argued, on TV, that we should not harvest kangaroos for their meat but that we should increase our beef industry instead. Anyone with a care for the Australian environment and the global environment knows that increasing the beef industry is a nightmare idea. Kangaroo meat is one of the best choices for the environment and for consumer health.

Good TV personality? sure. Cared about animals: yup. Cared about animals enough to not stress them out for the sake of his ratings: nup. Credentials to speak on environmental issues: no.

[–]Dereliction 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, I can't understand your annoyance. He exposed millions and millions of people to the enthusiasm that can be found in wildilfe and conservation. For many, Irwin transformed "monsters" seen as detestable and repulsive--snakes, alligators and so forth--into animals that can be respected and admired.

I think you suffer a bit from an "ivory tower" attitude that is divorced from the reality most people live with concerning nature and conservation. It's an attitude, like PETA's, that loses traction when it comes to inspiring, educating or motivating on any real scale. Steve Irwin changed the world for the better with his approach, and did so at a time when change is needed more than ever.

Now I'm not saying you're right or wrong about the cattle vs. kangaroo topic--I simply don't know enough about kangaroo's as a food source to intelligently discuss it--but I do think you're missing the point of importance about Irwin if that is your decision point regarding him.

Further, how can it seem appropriate to say, "It is no surprise he died provoking a dangerous animal?" Had Cousteau's grandson, with whom Irwin was working with at the time, instead have been the one to die would PETA remark the same way? Was he, too, antagonizing frightened animals like some cheap, reality TV star?

In truth, PETA is the Westboro Church of wildlife conservation. I'd think you should be aggravated with them far sooner than with Irwin.

[–]taliesinsmuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't stand PETA - most of their activities are sensationalist, ill-educated and seldom focused on the good of the environment....they get in everyone's faces with how much they love animals and then they do the wrong damned thing for them.

Which in a nutshell is exactly why I couldn't stand Irwin. The kangaroo statement was merely the tipping point - the point at which he went from a relatively harmless twit harassing animals for fun, to being a danger to the health of the environment. And before you say that's not so: he had, as you say, millions and millions of people - watching his shows, believing that he spoke the truth about the environment.

Dozens of other people have introduced millions to enthusiasm in wildlife and conservation: David Attenborough, Gerald Durrell...if you want Australians we've got people like Harry Butler. Eric Worrell started the Australian Reptile Park and when he harassed snakes it was to collect their venom for antivenene - not just for the fun of it on TV.

Couldn't care less if Cousteau's grandson was there: what one person does is no reflection on their grandfather. PETA are a bunch of morons, but what Mathews said there is almost exactly what I've been saying since Irwin died (with the exception that I usually compare him to Attenborough and Durrell).

I live 15 minutes away from Australia Zoo and I don't think I'll ever forget the day he died. The whole community just stopped. Stores closed, the streets were deserted and people were upset all over the place with complete strangers comforting each other. A friend and I visited the zoo the next day before work (this was at around 6am) and thousands of people had already stopped by and placed flowers around the front of the zoo. It was really heartbreaking.

I recall a story from his biography.

Steve was generally a very peaceful man, but there was an incident once when he was having dinner at a bar with his wife. He could hear several men talking about the alligators that they had recently poached and in particular they were laughing about a baby alligator that they had chained up so they could poke out its eyes with a stick.

Steve was not a large or imposing man, but he rose up out of his chair and was so infuriated with the group of men that they were terrified and left the bar.

Wow, I rarely find people that share a birthday with me! Know lots the day before or the day after though.

I found out a bit after midnight my time, was online in a chat room and at first thought people were kidding. Then I checked Google and knew I was going to have a terrible day!

[–]Sashieden 0 points1 point ago

I saw another interview (apologies for not knowing the source) where he talks about his solemn duty and passion is to protect animals and educate people. Edit: I guess he's said that quite a few times but when I heard it, it was quite poignant.

When you think about it, there are really are very few people like this in the world today who are courageous enough to say and do this. Most seem interested in selfish endeavours.

Only the good die young, unfortunately.

Fuck her, she is so creepy. How long after she turns 18 do you think it'll take before she's getting her jugs out for the Zoo centrefold? I'll never forget when Steve died, mainly because my own father had died a few weeks beforehand :(

[–]moosedance84 0 points1 point ago

The girl was like what 4-5. I think it was terrible that they just started promoting her so that they could fill the the gap. Seemed sickening to me.

[–]Edentide 0 points1 point ago

The barb that pierced his heart didn't kill him. The fact that he pulled it out was the cause of death. If he had left it in he would have survived.

This man, was my childhood hero. I watched The Crocodile Hunter religiously as a child. Everyday I would get home, rush through my homework, and tune to discovery channel to watch him, I would even miss dinner if it meant I got to watch his show. To me, he was invincible, like a real life super hero who could do anything.

Even though I was 13 when he died, I was still devastated. To this day I always remember how much I adored him. He's still my favorite super hero =D

This man was my idol, I wish I had a crocodile hunter shirt.. I watched his show for years, cried when Sui (his dog) had to be put down, rejoiced when Bindi, then later little Bob were born. I learned so much from animals from this man... I miss ya Steve, you left behind big shoes to fill.
