High 5 Bro! (i.imgur.com)

Anax junius, also known as a common green darner.
(sorry…when you study dragonflies, you really only get to use that skill once every two years or so)
[–]ShallowBasketcase 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
awesome job, dragonflies have been a favorite of mine since childhood. They're like nature's fighter jets, helicopters and car-radio-antanea-ornaments all in one!
[–]avdpt 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
100% agree. I never thought I'd end up as interested in them as I have been, but…dang, they're actually really cool.
But whatever you do: don't buy a guidebook. You'll start looking for them, and then you'll buy a net, and then you'll look ridiculous.
Trust me. I know. ;)
[–]Teekoo -10 points-9 points-8 points 1 year ago
Btw, those things bite really hard.
[–]avdpt 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
No. No they do not. You have to work really, really hard to get a dragonfly to puncture your sin.
That said, if you ever do get one to open its mouth, it is scary as all get out.
[–]greg_lw 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
I had to search for it and this is the first thing that came up. You were right.
This is superbly creepy. That said, I was more referring to this.
Eeesh.
Edit: formatting fail.

Dragonflies really are our insectoid allies. Now if only we could end our long-standing standoff with spiderkind…
[–]Lokonopa 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
We can end it easy enough with fire.
[–]EnjoyMyDownvote 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago
More like, "Stupid human. Get your filthy finger away from me bro".
[–]FailBear[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That works too. Hahaha.
[–]Ergosphere -11 points-10 points-9 points 1 year ago
I'm going to use this to repost. Thanks.
[–]chasezas 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
dragon flies are the ONLY cool insects.
[–]loveeverything 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
I don't know, since the epic tale of spiderbro I like spiders too. Also, praying mantis are pretty awesome, ants are fascinating and butterflies have beautiful patterns and colors.
But centipedes are plain assholes.
[–]tvkanters 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
While Spiderbro is indeed cool, he's an arachnid, not an insect.
[–]hankmurphy 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
A centipede is not an insect either.
[–]RougeWink 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Ohh.. spiderbro... never forget...
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I like spiders too
Do you really need somebody to tell you that spiders aren't insects?
But yes, centipedes are total jackasses.
[–]loveeverything 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago*
No, not anymore. tvkanters was so kind and enlightened me about the exact terminology that applies to spiders a bit earlier. Now I know that spiders are indeed arachnids and not insects, like I falsely assumed. Thank you for your concern.
Edit: For anyone interested, this is the reason why spiders do not count as insects. TIL!
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago*
Whelp, you can't know everything, I guess. It's just the "spiders aren't bugs" thing is so common that it's a staple conversation of sorts. Like calling a dolphin a fish and seeing a group of people stop and turn around at the same time in reaction to it.
EDIT: Even better, make sure you understand the difference between cordates and arthropods. Understanding that humans derive from pre-fish that formed a spinal cord inside and basically everything that gets called a "bug" derives from early exoskeleton-using creatures and that all of those are animals can really blow someone's mind. We've been competing on this planet for hundreds of millions of years.

What about a Praying Mantis?
Freakin ninjas
[–]justheretovote 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Honeybees are cool, friendly and helpful. Plus they make honey, though dragonflies are more showy.

In the name of Barney Stinson: Dragonfly five!
[–]laller 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I thought he was about to finger flick it.
[–]PickOneOrMore 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Woah.
Even more woah.
Fun fact: dragonflies were often called "the Devil's Darning Needles" back in the day. Looks like we just got needled.

Coolest thing about this type of insect is their larvae.
[–]AuntieSocial 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
My husband got bit by one of those fuckers. Made a fully grown man flail and curse. They're vicious.
Dragonfly larvae are the #2 predator in almost any aquatic environment behind fish. They spend most of their lives that way, actually.
[–]jediewok 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
They shoot water out their ass to propel through the water as nymphs. And the larvae of Dytiscus dytiscidae.. fucking hurts when they chomp on your finger.
[–]Clever_Clever 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Is that dragonfly named Corey or Trevor?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
Dude has obviously never been bit by one.
[–]na85 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
They don't bite
[–]Expl0siveAmnesia 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Oh yes they do, and hard too. Depending on the species of course, not all are big enough to be able to actually break the skin on a human. But all dragonflies (to my knowledge) are carnivorous, and have mouth parts for biting/grabbing their prey. Although most species aren't going to be able to break the skin, the larger species sure can. They're not aggressive, they aren't going to seek you out and try and bite you, but if you've caught one in your hands, it will certainly try and bite. Had one take a hefty bite out of one of my fingers when i was about 12 (again goes to show a dragonfly won't always be able to break the skin, but the skin of a 12 year old is not as thick as say an adult's would be). I ran screaming and bleeding to my dad (an entomologist) who laughed and said "I told you they were carnivorous, and what do we know about insects that are carnivorous?" "....they can bite." "And do we play with things that can bite?" "....no." Still bleeding, my finger throbbing, i sulked away having found respect for those fuckers.
[–]shamecamel 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
awesome dad, teaching his son respect for nature.
[–]Expl0siveAmnesia 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Daughter, actually. And yes, he was and still is an awesome dad. He has been teaching me since i was old enough to understand it, and nearly 30 years later still has things to teach me. Props to my daddy!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
They totally do.

Dragonflies hunt all manner of irritating insects, we should all go out of our way to be nice to them.
