I have a little video conferencing codec on my desk. The system's default camera angle isn't a functional angle, but I made it functional-- a calendar cutout of Homer Simpson greets me as soon as I turn the equipment on, and it's Homers all the way down!! It's my own personal splash screen until I have to do work.

Once, I was contacted by a client to test his equipment, but I left work early. I left my unit on and told him to dial it, and to call me back if he couldn't connect. I didn't hear back from him. WHOOPS! Wasn't thinking about Homer Simpson's feedback loop! Until the next day, when this Weenie Tot emailed me (and CCed my boss) asking rhetorically if I thought Homer Simpson was appropriate and professional.

I'm not incompetent. I'm not unprofessional. I wasn't thinking about Homer Simpson; I was trying to create convenience for the client.

Instead, I was chastised for the modicum of personality I added to a sterile workspace. That's his office, news camera or no news camera.

I'm just a user. But I know a bit about it. Most consumer-level/small business-level codecs (with multipoint features) are only equipped to handle 3 or 4-site multipoint calls. Some 6 or 8, depending on the licensing features. You also gotta have the bandwidth to back it up, as well, if you don't want heavy amounts of packet loss or a/v sync issues. If you wanna do an 18-site call, you're better off using a bridging service on a call-by-call basis.

Ah, thanks. No, the sites wouldn't all be in the meeting at once. A PM in our office participates in one OAC meeting per site/per week. So he could spend 3 - 4 days of his week driving a few hours for a meeting.

If I could have a station set up so they could participate in the remote meetings, I'd save a lot of overhead.

That's what we use it for. My desktop's on the cheap, our conference room has a nicer configuration. The initial investment paid for itself quick, and we found ourselves using it much more liberally than initially planned.

My desktop is a VSX 7000 we got used. We have a new 9000 in the conference room which was megabucks and 4500s everywhere else and a few Cisco Umi units which aren't great, but cheap. We wanted people+content options, but it's easier to just email and project a PPT than rely on a client's ability to format text and pictures into a presentation that actually views properly.

We weighed the cost against our annual travel budget. The initial up-front investment came in at about 3/4 of our annual travel expenses. 18 sites at $8K/ea is about $150k + service, so, it's either worth it or it's not.
