I like how it's still moving after being discarded. It's trying to wave goodbye!

If an animal discards a limb, is it ethical to eat it?

Could this be a substitute to processed meat so vegetarians can eat meat ethically?

"discard limbs" section in the deli department.

This is exactly what I was thinking!

My veggie-ass was sad that it was just left behind...

It would be rude to refuse!

I honestly don't see why not, even from a strictly vegan standpoint. Assuming the animal discarded the limb completely of its own volition, then you're not causing any pain or depriving it or its offspring of anything. The limb is clearly a waste product, and much in the spirit of using already fallen wood, there seems to be no harm and no foul.

Edit: Now that I think about it, maybe there's something to be said for a "scavenger" movement with respect to eating meat. For instance if you're a vegetarian but you come across a half eaten cougar carcass on a mountain trail, it should be okay for you to eat it, right?

'Okay' being used in a strictly moral, and not sanitary, sense of course.

That's basically the ethos behind the "freegan" philosophy. I think freegans tend to avoid discarded meat in dumpsters, unless they saw it being discarded behind a grocery store or something and retrieved it right away.

Crabs are arthropods, more similar to spiders and other bugs than mammals. There is some discussion among vegetarians (not vegan) that crabs, lobster, oysters, etc are far enough away and not capable of suffering in the same sense that we attribute to mammals.

For example, driving a car kills thousands of bugs, some vegetarians kill spiders/bugs in their house, etc so the essence is no different.

The main issue would prob be the collateral damage of harvesting the animals, which I do not know much about.

Fish, crustaceans and indeed most sea life are a lot more more intelligent than people give them credit for, I think putting them on the levels of vegetables is a bit unfair. Also, people who say 'I'm a vegetarian, I just eat fish', are fucking lying, they're really called pescetarianists. (I'm not a veggie, I'll eat anything with a face)

[–]xmod2 1 point2 points ago

In most cases, ethical vegetarians do not use intelligence as a deciding factor in whether something is a moral candidate. Someone is not more or less worthy of ethical treatment based on how smart they are.

Utilitarians strive to maximize utility/happiness, which in many cases takes the negative form of reducing/eliminating suffering. Capacity to suffer is the one shared thing which is non-trivial in ethical decisions. The place intelligence comes into play is mostly in violating something's will, which causes psychological/mental suffering. It's tricky though, because if you view will as simply danger avoidance, you'd be hard pressed not to claim that fungi and plants have a 'will'.

edit: re: pescetarians. This is true but in reality it's a gradient of varying levels. Some vegetarians will use leather products, insecticides and other things. Some vegetarians are strictly doing it for health reasons. In that case, pescetarian is probably the healthiest diet and makes the most sense in that regard.

They will grow back if the crab can still feed itself, however it may take a few months to grow back to full size.

Actually... it seemed like he didn't want that pincher anymore. So, more than not caring... it seemed like he desired the limb to be gone?
