Mandarin Goby! My dad had one exactly like this in his fish tank when I was younger and I haven't seen one in years!

They are my favourite fish but after a few failed attempts at keeping one hardy in my tank I did some research and found out that they do not do well in captivity. Apparently those who can keep them for a long time are lucky and have a really healthy tank with the perfect terrain and accompanying fish. I gave up because I didn't want to be cruel. That's awesome that your dad was able to keep one!

They are super fragile and need a very well established source of amphipods/copepods to eat, and those can take 6 months to years to get established in a tank.

Not to mention they are super docile and will not do well with any kind of aggressive fish.

I tried to have one. He did well but it was a large tank and only had about 4 fish in it. I also added a lot of rock and material from another tank that had 'pods to help foster the food chain. I only had it about a year before I dismantled the tank and sold off/gave away all my fish and materials.

The mandarin fish are my favorites along with Watchmen Goby.

I did have a lot of rock and seemed to have a good ecology of amphipods/copepods as they were always visible within the tank. I also had live sand rather than bare bottom which is also important from what I had read. I still didn't have any luck. :(

Watchmen Gobies!

A while back, I had a shrimp that I thought was gone forever, and then I bought a Watchmen Goby. The goby found the shrimp and they bonded... so now whenever the shrimp is out and you walk by the tank, the Goby swishes its tail at the shrimp to tell it to hide.

Totally awesome fish.

I just hope this doesn't mean they are all caught in the wild...but I guess some are. This company seems to be able to breed them in captivity though - ORA

From what the fish store had told me (and they were good guys) most of them are caught in the wild. It is cool that these guys found a way to breed them.

Ours did pretty well. I think it lasted around 7 years and we bought it mature. The oldest fish we had were some clown fish that got to at least 12 years old.

Interesting, the first one I had was mature and was doing well until I bought some rock and unfortunately had a rock crab in it who didn't make his presence known until I eventually put it in the tank. The other two were both quite young.

You need a large, but stable copepod population and the pods need to be where the dragonet can find them. Super hard to accomplish. There are only 2 other ways to keep them:

-Get one that has been trained to eat from a stick

-Buy bottled copepods and use them as food ($15-20 per bottle)

My LFS had one for a while, but my advice is to leave them in the sea :P

Your advice is what I finally decided on as well.

Your tank must have copious amounts of copepods to keep them. this is best accomplished with a refugium or a giant fucking reef tank with lots of live rock rubble

Save the oceans by purchasing tank bred animals, to be exact.

Surprisingly cheap, actually.

You can get them at many pet stores for around 19-29$, but they're kind of an unfortunate casualty of the aquarium hobby. People are not careful and don't understand what they are doing, and it's damaging to their population. They have special eating requirements that most people are not aware of, and people think they can simply buy them and that's that... which ends in most of them dying.

I have one myself, they're just as fascinating in person, but you can only keep them if your aquarium has a good population of small edible creatures such as copepods. As mentioned in here, your best bet is a refugium.

This is the fist that got me into marine aquaculture! Five years later, I still haven't kept one. Slowly working up the cash to build and seed a refugium... Someday, little fishy!

Amazingly the picture, while fantastic, does not do it justice; you really need to see one in person to fathom how beautiful they are.

Same with most "shiny" saltwater fish. Have you ever seen a reef chromis? They look boring in pictures, but in real life their scales constantly shimmer and shift their hue and it looks fucking amazing.

I had one, but I had to take it back to the store because my picasso triggerfish kept nipping at it.

What's better than eating a Mandarin? Eating Amanda out.
