The logic is that some people read different subreddits, but nobody reads all of them. The odds are better that someone hasn't seen it if it's being posted in another subreddit. Really though, the deal is to motivate people to post original content that people haven't seen before. If we witchhunted every post that had ever been on reddit before over ninety percent of the new boards could be flamed. New content just can't appear as quickly as we can post it. As long as OPs motivation wasn't a pointless grab at interweb points, there's not much harm done.

The logic only works if there is no front page...

If the Pics posts only are on the Pics subreddit then your logic works, but the Pics posts are not segregated to only Pics so when a r/GIF post hits the front page at the same time as an r/PICS post and they are not the same OP, then it looks like a repost.

I try to ignore most reposts, as really, it is not that big a deal... I do however, make some snide/quip remarks if I see the same post I already made a comment to show up again...

I definitely understand your logic, (even though I don't subscribe to r/pics so it doesn't show up on my front page). I guess after a while I start to realize that almost everything on this site has been posted before, whether it made it to the front page or not. There always seems to be somebody that hasn't seen it before or wants to talk about it anyway. But keep the snide remarks, there's a downvote button already, and if you stop scrolling and go into the comments you should want to talk about the thing, not just bash it for being exactly like the majority of the posts i see every day.
