I'm from Ontario and no one speaks this way

Alberta. Never heard the often mocked "Aboot" in conversation, ever.

X3, though lots of "Where ya to, bai?"

I have only ever heard this when I spent Christmas with a bunch of Newphies. I have decided that the rest of the world perceives the Canadian accent to be what is actually a Newfoundlander (East Coast?) accent. Much the same as many Canadians believe the American accent to be what is actually a Southern accent, or sometimes a Boston accent. This is just based off of my own experiences though, so feel free to correct me :)

There are LOTS of Newfies in Fort Mac

There are! That particular Christmas was actually spent in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. I was there working without any family. They took me in for Christmas. It was a lot of fun, although once they got to drinking I didn't understand much of what was said.

Yeah - try having to figure out what they're trying to tell you on a two way radio...

Second biggest city in Newfoundland.

I'm a Newfie. With all the variety of Newfoundland accents I've heard in my life (and believe me, there are quite a few) I've never once heard anyone say "aboot." I've never heard anyone else say it like that either, despite having visited a few other provinces.

I've never heard it in Quebec either. I think Canadians are so immune to criticism that Americans finally just had to make shit up.

Also from Ontario, I've never heard anyone say "aboot".

I have, but only when talking fast, and about a boot.

The reason Americans think Canadians talk like this is because the American pronunciation has an 'ow' sound in it. They say "abowt" so when we say "about", to their ears it sounds like "A-boot".

Strangely enough, I'm from Ontario and I say aboot and other words entirely different from my friends and family. Always get shit for it too.

Really? Really?

So youre saying... on episodes of the Kids in the Hall, or Trailer Park Boys, or whatever iteration of Degrassi is on at the moment... when they say "aboot" or "sore-ey" instead of "about" or "sorry", its really just an elaborate decades-long troll against americans?

A+

Typical american ignorance. =P This is likely an irish like accent you'd hear in Nova Scotia but I've never been so I don't know...

Okay fellow Canadians, gather round the campfire and let me tell you about our accent. As a Canadian living in America, I have had far too much experience with this topic.

We do say words with "out" in them differently. And what's more, we are unable to hear the difference, and Americans are. We would never mistake the words "about" and "a boot", however. So then, why do Americans think that we would?

Simply put, because just like we can't hear that we say these words differently, Americans can't hear the difference correctly. The sound we make when saying "out" is received in our brains in the same manner as when we hear an American say the same thing. In someone raised with an American accent, it's received in the same way as the sound "oot". It's linguistics, it's neurology, and it's way over my head, but that's about the best way I can describe it.

After months being here, I can sort of hear it. I can tell the difference if I hear two people say the same word, one with each accent. It's handy because it usually means I can pick out fellow Canadians. But I cannot, for the life of me, make myself sound American when I say it.

Edit: Except for Newfoundland. Their accent is just weird enough to maybe sound more "oot"-ish. And maybe parts of the Ottawa Valley.

[–]rudster 3 points4 points ago

Correct. It's called Canadian Raising.

For Americans, the vowel in lout is the same as the vowel in loud. If you want to sound like an American, just say loud but at the last moment change the d to a t. Try the same thing with the make-believe word aboud.

Americans in the northeast actually have Canadian raising for the other vowel, and pronounce the vowel in rice differently than in rise.

And maybe parts of the Ottawa Valley.

That's because there's a ton of Newfs and Cape Bretoners in the Ottawa Valley.

If you heard a Canadian say aboot, it's because we're making fun of you.

I sometimes say "a-boat" when I'm talking quickly but never "aboot".

I'm from Toronto. No one says "aboot" but a lot of people, especially outside the big cities do pronounce about in a funny way. The truth is, most can't hear the difference when they say it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_raising

I've lived in Vancouver, and Kitchener near Tornoto, and never heard aboot until the South Park movie. I find it quite funny and about as true as our disjointed heads, square wheeled cars, our Canadian Airport, Downtown Canada, Celine Dion, and the royal wedding.

I am sort of cringing now though because if was Trey Parker and/or Matt Stone, I would be brewing up an episode of the whole country rioting over a Lacrosse game lost to Quebec.

Nova Scotia checking in, and never heard it said like that. Heard many Americans say "abaot", though...

The only Canadian stereotype that's true is "eh."

Even "Canadian bacon" is BS. Sure we have back bacon, but it's usually hidden in the meat section as it is.

it's just cleverly disguised as Peameal Bacon... and it's readily on display as such in just about every grocery store around. Tasty stuff too.
