What are those straight lines with parallel lines on the side?

So how do they see it underwater?

[–]AManFromDoncaster 0 points1 point ago

Sub's do have cameras that look up. I've seen video footage from HMS Trafalgar as it sat just 30ft under our ship as we spent 5 hours looking for it.

The clearing of snow would form a target which could be seen underwater as the light would penetrate the ice quite easily. It's also feasible that the target is there for the helicopter/plane pilot so it knows exactly where to be to wait for the sub to surface.

This is a repost. One of the comments from the older post was that they indeed missed the target, which are the lines in the right corner.

Yes, 3 miles of ice and they're off by 100ft. Clearly missed it (and clearly sarcastic).

Reminded me of the scene in FireFox when Clint Eastwood's plane had to be re-fuled.

Now I feel old by saying that...

Loved that movie as a kid btw, the Laserdisc arcade game was also pretty cool!!

One of my coworkers at my first job told me he was once in the navy and had been a crewmen on a submarine. He told me this story once...

His sub was doing its sub thing in the 80s (before cold war end) in the artic under the ice. They were crusin along and decided to come through the ice and do their weekly report or something and let the men stretch their legs on the ice, maybe play soccer/football or something. So they break through the ice and it turns out, about 50 yards away there was a Russian sub doing the exact same thing.

Did they stare eachother down and point guns and get all rowdy? Nah, they played a Russian sub crew vs American sub crew soccer, using the subs as the goals (the russians won).

did he start the tale with "this is no shit"?

[–]orange_jooze 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't they have sonars and shit? How did they "accidentally" stumble into another submarine in a huge ocean?

It was probably a cover up for secret agents smuggling their secret shit.

[–]dangerousdave 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Submarines generally don't use 'active' sonar (where they send out pings), for obvious reasons it makes you kind of hard to detect.

So using passive sonar (just listening) I'm not sure how easy it would be to detect a sub on the surface under the ice. On the other hand nuclear subs generally have pumps (that make noise) to keep the reactors cool that need to function constantly, or else. So presumably a reasonably competent sub would be able to find another sub from at least close range.

[–]squidgy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Under ice it's almost impossible to hear anything passively. Ice floes produce a unbelievable amount of noise across the spectrum while grinding against each other and crashing into things. I'd imagine that even with active sonar, a surfaced sub would effectively merge with the ice pack unless you were right under it.

As for the noise, the advantage of having a hot reactor surrounded by freezing water is that you can use natural circulation currents to help with cooling. Some naval reactors can run up to a decent power level without even needing coolant pumps, making them effectively silent. Very valuable capability for SSBNs especially, so it's definitely possible for two of them not to notice each other until it's too late.

Kinda related - there has only ever been one case of a submarine sinking another submarine while both submarines were submerged.

[–]masked 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

do you mean in a accident, like the Baton Rouge had in 1992? rumor is the Scorpion may have sunk herself.

[–]yellowstone10 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope! It was the HMS Venturer back in 1945. She managed to sink the German submarine U-864, making her the only submarine ever to deliberately sink another submarine while both were submerged.

Hey, this is my background picture at work! I am one of the poor little cubicle workers in the company that designs these subs for the Navy. Pretty cool work for a mechanical engineer though. But yeah, this is from ICEX and I believe from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Exercise_2009.

[–]jsmayne 3 points4 points ago

they make an X in the snow/ice to show where they want the sub to come up.

they try to get as close as they can. but it's hard to maneuver 250,000lbs underwater and mostly blind.

(I learned this from the SG1 movie)

[–]AgnewsNews 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It could be. The U.S. Navy tries to send a submarine crew up to the arctic to do that at least once a year at random to ensure that their crews are capable of doing it. There was also a squadron of attack submarines stationed under the arctic at all times during the Cold War, but I don't know if they still do that nowadays.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't call Ohio class "attack submarines". I would call them about the scariest thing to ever submerge though, so I guess it fits. I've read about the legends/myths of them getting with meters of russian subs and pinging, just to let them know who owned the water. Nerves. Of. Steel.

[–]verbalsadist 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ohio Class are:

 1. not 'attack submarines'
 2. unable to ping
 3. immediately run from any submarine that isn't American due to nuclear payload.

[–]verbalsadist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ohio class submarines don't have active sonar, unless you're counting their fathometer.

[–]Stealth_Cow 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're thinking of the Sturgeon class. The Ohio (SSBN/SSGN) are missile subs. If they got close enough to a Russian sub like that on purpose, odds are good a Captain and a Commander would spend the rest of their careers getting an Admiral coffee at the Pentagon.

[–]eltra27 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is more than one class of attack submarines.

[–]Stealth_Cow 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are. But those "legends/myths" are 90% Sturgeon class. Blind Man's Bluff? The 688's weren't tried and tested enough for most captains to pull that stuff until 80's, and the Thresher class had problems.

[–]pstryder 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Los Angeles class are the current 'attack' class of submarines. They are subs that hunt other subs.

The Ohio class are 'boomers', so called because they carry the nuclear missiles. Ohio class subs don't attack other subs.

[–]ShrineMaster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Virginia class is the latest class of fast attack submarines. With 2 per year being built, they will eventually replace the 688 class.

[–]Stealth_Cow 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Two per year is the line of bull and underbidding Electric Boat gave congress. I read a story a story at Defenseindustrydaily.com about how they now realistically believe the production to be in the 2.5 billion dollar range and one every four years.
