As an owner of 2 small general stores, I would give a free one to someone who gave me the wrappers. But I never redeemed them (since it is a myth) and I would end up throwing them away.

Some people just shouldn't interact with the public. My brother once asked what it would cost to play an arcade machine, in a comic book shop, and the hot tempered Italian behind the counter yelled at him. "HEY! HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW!? FIGAH IT OUT!"

[–]svantuss 42 points43 points ago

The little general store around the corner from where I went to Elementary school also gave out freebies for the Indian star wrappers. Such nice people owned it. Years later when I found out they weren't actually "redeeming" those wrappers anywhere, I liked them even more. :-)

[–]chakalakasp 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. You just made me realize how awesome the owner of the gas station I redeemed these at was. It's been over 20 years, and I never realized this wasn't a real thing until just now.

[–]mbora 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People like you made my childhood awesome. I used to collect these. A clerk at the 7-11 would let me trade 10 of them for one of those chewing tobacco sized cans of shredded beef jerky. More than a decade later I realized this clerk, who made barely more than minimum wage, was paying for the jerky out of his pocket.

[–]Ecpie 3 points4 points ago*

You don't think he was just giving you the stores merchandise? Not snarking, honestly wondering.

[–]TopherChico 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It wasn't even just small general stores that honored it for me. I'm 22 now, and I lived in oklahoma from 12-20. Logically Q-T in Oklahoma upheld this tradition from my age of 12-approx. 18. As I traded them in up until my last year in high school. Before that in Arkansas I traded them in at Sinclair. Dino has free lollies!!

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

You know, little things like that add magic to a kid's life, and a feeling of getting lucky when most of being a kid means having little freedom and relying on others for treats. Hearing the legand of free candy was false would make a kid wake up to the harsh nature of the world a little. Thanks for prolonging the wonder of luck and innocence of childhood for all those kids.

My small corner store would accept them, thus furthering the rumor. I think they just thought it was cute.

[–]CtotheW 4 points5 points ago

Ditto, I think it was just one of those cultural things where the myth becomes reality, at least locally. Growing up primarily in New England I redeemed many of these wrappers.

Wow. Dude, every store in my (amazingly small) home town honored Indian Star tootsie pop wrappers.

It was awesome. They cost $0.25 and sometimes you'd get 2 or 3 in a row before you had to buy another one. I'm fairly sure that most of the shops in nearby towns honored it too.

At one point though, after all of us kids started abusing it, they made you hand in three wrappers for one free tootsie pop :(

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Inflation.

[–]Wollff 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My best guess: The company simply profited from the hype.

Because if they wanted to stop those rumors, they would simply have had to remove that damned star from the wrapper. And that's not exactly an integral piece of the design.

So the company was aware of the false rumors for decades, but decided to do nothing. Which is kind of a dick move, if you think about it.

But it will sell more lollies if stores are forced to give part of their stocks away...

http://www.snopes.com/business/deals/pepsijet.asp

[–]CelebornX 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's such bullshit, though. Obviously they shouldn't have had to give him a jet, but they used that example in their advertisement in order to enhance the idea of all the cool things available for redemption in their promotion.

While it may be true that an objective person could have reasonably concluded that the company didn't actually offer a Harrier jet, PepsiCo should have still been held accountable for benefiting in a marketing sense by making the false claim.

I always wondered about this when I little. I lived in the city, there were no small town corner store type things where I was. I remember thinking all the time "a free one? How? Where?" I never asked anyone though. I think part of me thought they'd just appear one day, like money from the tooth fairy or something. I hadn't given up hope ... until today.

I've actually gotten free tootsies out of them. that might have just been my school system though. Talk about trolling the kids.

I don't think that's trolling.

They were good for one pop where i grew up.. but you basically had kids looking through all of the tootsie pops whenever they opened up a new box... this is where i also learned what "dibs" meant.

[–]Sasquatch99 0 points1 point ago

It always worked for us, there was even one little store that gave you 5 if you gave them one with that. We rarely got to go to that store though.

Yeah I always thought so. I grew up in the Chicago area, but never tried to get one with it.

I got a free tootsie pop as a kid when I collected 10 of them and took them to the drug store on main street of my little town. I'm in my mid-20s.

Man, those were the greatest. I would hate when cashiers wouldn't accept them. How many did it take for you to get a free lolly? In most cases it was 6 for me.

I remember trying this at a grocery store with my mom when I was 10. The store (now I realize rightfully) said they had not heard of this deal. My mom ended up just buying me a bag of them. As I wrote this, I literally felt my face flush with embarrassment for being so naive, even though being naive is totally acceptable for a 10 year old.

As a kid, if we found one of the tootsie wrappers with this on it, we could redeem it with our local ice cream man. He would give us either another tootsie pop or bubble gum (the really big, ball kind). I loved it.

From connecticut for reference. She is from Iowa.

I lived on a small island in coastal Texas before moving to Dallas, and the local marina would give us free Tootsie Pops for the wrappers... like a lot of you have said already.
