These guys are the Tokyo Rockabilly Club - they meet every Sunday outside the entrance Yoyogi park. Fun guys, pretty much the living embodiment of not giving a shit.

Never seen them before, but both times I've been to Yoyogi, it was raining. I guess their hair is terrified of the rain.

To anyone in here - do these performers need a permit to perform in public parks/anywhere? Just curious, because it seems everything is becoming "quiet zones" here in some cities in the States.

One of the youtube comments I've seen for the video: "As usual, the Japanese almost understand the meaning of Western culture, but NOT QUITE."

[–]AimlessArrow 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think probably my favorite thing about Japan is their tendency to not just adopt other cultural ideas, but to take the ball and run with it.

The West introduced Japan to corporations. Now they work so hard the average Japanese family has 1 hour of together-time a night (and the salaryman drinking himself to an early death is a ubiquitous meme).

The West introduced Japan to biker gangs. Now Japan proceeds to come out with such outrageous pompadours it boggles the mind.

Whatever the Japanese do, they do hardcore.

[–]richmcc 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with the principle, but to be pedantic, corporations can't be attributed entirely to the west. Family-run zaibatsus like Sumitomo existed in Japan before the Meiji Restoration, and drove economic development before Japan had intense contact with the western world.

I used to live in Harajuku and in the spring and summer I'd go hang out in Yoyogi park on Sundays and watch these guys dance ALL FUCKING DAY. They also throw open beers at each other and never catch them, just pick them up off the ground, while they're shooting foam, and drink them.

[–]heuheuheuheuh 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They sound more like Stone Cold Steve Austin than characters from grease, or whatever they're going for. They just look like stereotypical anime henchmen from the 70's or something to me.

[–]The_Adventurist 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're a gang of rockabilly dancers. They've been together and dancing in the same spot in the same park every Sunday for like 25 years or something like that. They even have a giant pink 50's Cadillac that they ride around in.

I know this just because I lived like a 2 minute walk from where they do this.

[–]bukti 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been on one holiday to Japan. Only spent one day in Harajuku and I found it almost spiritual. I have never seen so many people happy doing what they love.

A woman playing the cello, high school girls practising their favourite dance song, teenage boys doing harlem globe trotter style tricks, mini-baseball games for kids, uni students acting out a play.

If there is ever a reason for me to visit Japan again, it is Harajuku.

I'm interested to hear your highlights?

[–]The_Adventurist 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I lived in Harajuku for about 9 months, then moved to Shinjuku, then moved to just outside Shinjuku. I loved the last place the best because although it was quiet and no tourists visited my neighborhood, it was probably one of the coolest neighborhoods in Tokyo. It was all small walking streets and the birthplace of punk rock in Japan. There were hardcore punk bars across the small street from pie shops that look like they just came out of a Miyazaki movie. There were also like 50 restaurants in the area, all serving different kinds of food; from Persian food with live belly dancing and shisha to fugu restaurants to every kind of delicious Japanese food restaurant (yakitori, okonomiyaki, tempura, sushi, etc) AND there was a fresh vegetables and fish market there that would only offer the freshest produce I've ever seen.

Also, I'd often wake up on a Sunday morning to hear crazy drums and yelling outside only to discover a gigantic fucking parade on my doorstep. My area had lots of community festivals where everyone came out to entertain or be entertained. There were vaudevillian comedy acts, story tellers, magicians, jugglers, etc.

Tokyo really is one of the best places in the world to live.

[–]sobri909 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tokyo is such a fantastic city to live in. I live for three to six months in Ebisu each year. This year my apartment was on a quiet street with a river on one side. Between me and the station (5 min walk) I had a Korean restaurant, two whiskey bars, three Italian restaurants, a French restaurant, cool antiques shop, uncountable Japanese restaurants (of course)... and plenty more I can't think of right now.

Can't wait to get back there again later this year.

[–]The_Adventurist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, Ebisu was awesome for bars and restaurants. Plus, it's like one stop away from Shibuya so you get the more quiet neighborhood with access to all the craziness of Shibuya.

Have you been to China Five in Ebisu? You can get amazing Chinese food and an entire Peking duck for Y3,000. It easily feeds like 3 people and the chef comes out personally and carves it up for you.

[–]sobri909 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I walked past China Five every day :) Was on my walk to the station. Never went in though. I'll have to!

Great thing about Ebisu is if you stay out past last train in Shibuya you can still walk home.

[–]The_Adventurist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chine Five is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in all of Tokyo. You NEED to check it out. I ate scorpions there. Bring your friends, it's great for a group of people.

Yeah, when I lived in Harajuku I could bike home from Shibuya or Roppongi whenever I fucking felt like it. My friends were super jealous. Even when I lived in Shinjuku, it was close enough to bike in under 20 minutes.

I feel like Tokyo is my true home. I'm back in the united states, where I was born and raised, and this country is too terrible and apathetic about it for me to be happy here. The last time I entered Japanese immigration, the agent said, "welcome home" instead of "welcome to Japan" and it really struck a chord with me.

[–]sobri909 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm back in NZ at the moment, where I grew up. First time living back here in three years, been back two months and it doesn't feel like home at all. I keep saying I'm homesick for anywhere but here. But most specifically I'm homesick for Bangkok and Tokyo.

Friends in Tokyo moan about various cultural problems there, and they're right, there are problems, but I'd take it any day over anywhere else. It's not perfect, but there's a whole lot right about it.

[–]snark_nerd 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also smiled when I saw these guys in Harajuku, but I had to point out that one man's "spiritual doing what they love" is another man's "attention whore", no?

Harajuku, in general, is just an awesome sight to behold. There are few places I've been where you get such a visual overload, although Shibuya at night is pretty amazing as well. If you can't go there and just enjoy the variety of human experience, there is something deeply wrong with you.

When you consider the culture at large, it's probably no surprise that there is an outlet like this for the youth.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Wild Zero. It's the only Japanese Punk Rock Zombie movie with a drinking game as a DVD extra.

I saw a few "greasers" when I was in Tokyo. Different districts have different styles, so you'll find a bunch of girls dressed up in maid outfits just standing around looking cool in one district, greasers in another. It's really quite strange. I remember accidently asking a pimp for directions in Shibuya, too. He was standing at a busy intersection with a bunch of scantily clad girls. It wasn't until after I asked that someone else came up to me and said "You realize he's a Yakuza pimp, right?"

The Yakuza stand out the most; I spotted a few in the subway. One had a bright yellow suit with black sunglasses on. If you get close, you'll notice that some of the older Yakuza members have missing or scarred fingertips. They're polite just like everyone else, though.

The Tokyo rockabilly/ psychobilly scene is one of the world's great cultural secrets, in my opinion. I was in tokyo in 2007 and 2008 and had the chance to see a bunch of shows, rocking mosh pits full of skinny tattooed yakuza kids. That and bosozoku (motorcycle/scooter gang culture) is where this style is coming from.

Harajuku, the "youth fashion" district with the awesome costumes in the video is also a treat. Photographers line up on one of the streets and the kids parade past, showing off their fashion designs.

I'm not sure whether this link will work outside of The Netherlands, but the show Try before you die had an episode about those guys. They speak Dutch, but you can see some more action anyway. Go to 00:30 to skip the intro.

That guy who does it is kind of crazy, there's also an episode where he drinks some breast milk straight from the breast.

Honest question. Is this a for real cultural subset in japan that keeps gaining new people, or is this something that was a big fad years ago, so most of the participants are in their 30s?

i can't imagine an 18 year old setting down the technology and anime influenced culture to go for the Elvis look of the 50's.
