Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

don't forget to oxidize your electrons folks, if you don't they tend to get a very negative vibe going on, and we want them with a positive attitude.

No, Phil Spector is still the holder of the Epic Fro title.

[–]MsAnnThrope 1 point2 points ago

I can't deny that. Although he's not nearly as friendly as our dear departed Mr. Ross.

[–]kopkaas2000 0 points1 point ago

Definitely. Bob Ross painted happy trees. Spector had other hobbies:

According to some women who were said to have met Spector, there would come a point when they wanted to leave Spector's home, whereupon he would hold them at gunpoint

Great producer, back in the days, though.

Oh, definitely. Let it Be, All Things Must Pass, Imagine, and River Deep - Mountain High (among others) were all great albums. He was good at his job. He was just kind of a sucky human being aside from that.

Someone wrote a whole book about the history of the elements of the periodic table and it's full of facts like this. This property of Gallium is actually where the title comes from.

Look up Gallium Source. I got some shipped to Australia although it's pretty expensive. You can get super cheap magnesium ribbons on there as well, which are great fun.

[–]mascan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For anyone who wants to know why magnesium ribbons are fun, it's because they burn really bright and at a high temperature (which can be used to burn thermite).

[–]leaf_house 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But don't look at it directly as it's burning, because you can hurt your eyes.

Sure, but I doubt it would be all that effective. Also it probably be cheaper and easier to just use ice or cold water instead.

[–]Enjina 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i think he means body temperature.

[–]chemistry_teacher 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He almost surely means room temperature. The scale in consideration is the melting point of all metals, most of which melt at far higher temperatures. "Room Temperature" implies no need for any significant amount of added heat.

Sorry about nerding out like that. :)

[–]cartola 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If your body temperature is 85º F you're dead.

[–]Peregrineeagle 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

External temperature, not core temperature.

[–]Becani 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"The lowest documented body temperature from which anyone has recovered was 13.0 °C (55.4 °F)"

85 ºF classifies as 'moderate' hypothermia. I imagine people survive that all the time.

[–]Smudded 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Room temperature has a slightly different connotation in science than in the eyes of your average person.

[–]step1makeart 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Scientific use

For scientific calculations, room temperature is usually taken to be either 20 or 25 degrees Celsius (293 or 298 kelvin (K), 68 or 77 degrees Fahrenheit).[citation needed] For numerical convenience, 300.00 K (26.85 °C, 80.33 °F) is often used, without being specified as "room temperature".[citation needed] However, room temperature is not a uniformly defined scientific term, unlike Standard Temperature and Pressure, or STP, which has several slightly different definitions.

I would think though, that for "scientific use" they just measure the dam temperature instead of saying conditions were at room temperature. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure that's how science works.

[–]Smudded 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obviously if you're doing research you include the specific measurements, but if you're talking to the media or something about cold fusion and why it would be awesome you say it works at room temperature.

[–]step1makeart 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

which is a perfect example of a non scientific use

[–]tricolon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Note that gallium is being used as part of a hydrogen-extraction process -- using aluminum, by no strange coincidence -- developed at Purdue University. Read on, nerds... http://www.physorg.com/news98556080.html

Melt large amount of Gallium. Dip closed fist in Gallium. Punch things in a freezer. Profit.

[–]a11en 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ach- I cringed looking at that- those are large crystals of gallium- such a shame to melt them. (unless they're easy to form that large- I don't know).

Also- it is a federal offense to carry gallium on a plane.

I used to wish I could get ahold of some gallium and experience this; maybe mint some coins out of it as a prank, because the idea of my own body heat melting something seemed unreal.

It's hard to believe I didn't realize that chocolate did the same thing. M&Ms' slogan didn't make sense to me at the time either. And apparently I'd only eaten Snickers bars indoors or very quickly until then.

[–]tatjr13 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoons were sometimes made out of Gallium and when eating hot items like soup people would return to find that their spoon had mysteriously disappeared.
