My hs Spanish teacher was a Gum Nazi Spy. He'd take down four to five kids during class, every class. The kids themselves never knew what was coming, the man was always one, sometimes two steps ahead of us. I often recall him standing with his back to the whole class while reading about tacos, then all of a sudden whip his spiny figure around and point his devil finger at an unsuspecting gum chewer and shout with all his might as if he was Pancho Villa himself, "Gum en la basura! Ahora!" Pants were shat.

My HS spanish teacher was the same way. I sat at the back right of the classroom and the door was in the front right. One day she came in and the lights were off and without even turning her head to look in my direction she said, "LoneMyth, throw out your gum." I was astounded because I don't usually chew gum.

I've mentioned this before in a lot of posts, but I wish the gum rules were stricter due to these two things, Akousticophobia brought on because of Sensory Defensiveness Disorder... Hated Gum in high school, because it's embarassing to come out and say it's worse than getting punched in the face.

not really a counterargument, the rule is obviously not there to suit the one person. It just happens to be a biproduct of the rule that happens to benefit me and a few others... But Even so, If someone were allergic to strong light, you know they would switch to dimmer bulbs for that person, or to be more specific to behavior, if someones allergic to cigarette smoke, people are generally compliant with not smoking. Both are strong adverse reactions that few people are affected by.

I encourage my students to chew gum. Studies have shown that keeping a physical rhythm (by walking, etc.) can have a positive effect on learning.

It also makes them not worry about their breath, so in a language classroom it relives some apprehension about speaking.

Man I had a drama teacher bitch at these kids chewing gum in front of the whole class and then I decide to fake chew gum and she storms over and demands I spit out the gum.
